Why is Grandville called Grandville?
Because they needed a name for a special place, a dark place, a place containing all manner of unspeakable evil; a twisted shadow of a city, polluted, steeped in treachery and deceit...
...and "Detroit" was already taken.

It always seemed like an odd name for the center of an evil organization...

That and it makes printing placenames on travel brochures cheaper...
I don't see how anyone at the head of an army of spider themed thugs can be considered an anarchist. That's quite some fascist hierarchy he has there.

Recluse demands you obey and follow him on the (not entirely unfounded) assumption that he and his power can crush you if you do not. He demands obedience not for obedience's sake, but to keep him from killing you. That's why Arbiters are "inviolate" - they are his arm and he doesn't want you breaking it. But in reality, when you do violate his rules, he doesn't actually punish you, because in doing so you've proven your strength to get away with it. He keeps Scirocco on despite him trying to rewrite the universe because of Scirocco's audacity. He acquiesces when you throw his future-mask down before him despite that fact that he could probably send all of Arachnos to destroy you because he respects your power.
Recluse is most definitely an anarchist, and any signs you see of him being fascist instead are misunderstandings of what anarchism actually means (or mistaking Ghost Widow's faction for Recluse's).
Most people are taking the English definition of the word "grand," but bear in mind that an awful lot of the Rogue Isles' names come from French. In French, you have "grand" which is large, and "ville" for city. So, Grandville is just French for "big city." I suppose it's the largest city area in the Isles, but it's still a bit of a misnomer in comparison to Paragon.
The thing I have to wonder is if it's an indirect reference to another comic city named for being a big city: Metropolis, home of Superman. Or if it's just its own big city and our devs are painfully bland in their naming. |
Also I would be extremely surprised if "Smallville" wasn't thought of during the naming process.
Keep in mind that while there is lore for the isles existing before Recluse claimed them, that lore was probably crafted after the expansion was set into motion. Cryptic (at the time) knew full well what the isles would be as they named them, so I'm sure there is some relevance.
Ignore these people. The reason Grandville is called Grandville is because unknown to everyone, Zynga bought the rights to the Rogue Isles and turned the Web into an internet phenomenon called Farmville.
And you wonder why Recluse rants so often...he got cut out of the profits.

When City of Villains was announced and they were talking about how Grandville was going to be a "vertical" zone, I think my imagination really went crazy and I thought it was going to be a ridiculously tall city with lots of stuff happening from top to bottom. Turns out it is tall with most of the stuff happening on the ground floor.

Grandville is called Grandville due to the fact out of all the villes, Grandville is the grandest, which is why the people who founded Grandville named it Grandville, so next time you go to Grandville, remember how it got the name Grandville. Now, back to getting badges in Grandville.

Because 'Not So Grandville" didn't sound as good of course!
Everytime I see the name though... In my mind I hear...
"Take the last train to Grandville and I'll meet you at the station! There's no need to worry because I've made our reservations!
Yeah I know it's Clarksville
Actually, Recluse took a fascist organisation and turned it anarchist. Some remnants of the old order remains (largely embodied by Ghost Widow, who is not loyal to Recluse), and he holds anarchist ideals and world views pretty consistently, actually. It's one of the few things about Recluse as depicted in the game I like; he's unabashedly Chaotic, and acts like a Chaotic.
