I get 5.6% six-slotted with LotG (level 50), according to Mids, which sounds about right from what I recall from my Defenders. Hover gets you... Something like 4% with two slots of Gift of the Ancients (level 40), I believe? (3.78% comes to mind first, I don't recall the exact number)

You're probably right. I may have confused the amount Tankers get from Weave with the amount Defenders get from maneuvers.

i'm wondering if Ultimo_ did in fact follow a useful amount of the advice he was given and whether it worked out for him.

A non useful amount when following advice is, for example, slotting some powers in ways that were actually suggested for different powers, or taking the advice to slot for accuracy and damage as meaning to slot four accuracy and two endurance reduction or something similar. (Although that might still be an improvement over the original build.)

Indeed, I have taken some of the advice I have been given. I even applied some of it to other characters.

The advice regarding IOs was especially useful, as I've never really looked into them at all before now. I still think it's apalling that I'm more or less forced to get into them in order to make the character fun to play, but at least the possibility is there (and I admit I'm fairly demanding in this regard).

Add to that the astonishing generosity of Dersk, who sent me more than enough influence to bankroll my IOing, and I'm definitely noticing some improvement.

To be fair, IOs are only "necessary" for certain power sets. Most Blasters, for instance, can operate just fine on only SOs and Stamina as far as endurance is concerned. They need IOs to actually become survivable solo at higher difficulties, but on teams or at base difficulty they can blast all day long without running out of endurance. It's mainly the lower damage ATs like many Defenders and Controllers that have the most trouble, plus a few Brute, Tanker, and Scrapper combos that just suck a ton of endurance.

Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)
Mechmeister, level 50 Bots / Traps MM
FAR too many non-50 alts to name

The Scavenger Hunt: 187076
The Instant Lair Delivery Service: 206636

i'm more than willing to slot up a second build with only SOs and play it. i know that i won't be as powerful, but i have confidence in my ability to solo any AT or powerset combo on SOs alone. Some team-centric combos might be slower than i actually like done that way, but i know it's perfectly doable. After all, i'd been doing it since June 2004 through all the changes to the game up until IOs were added. (Frequently i spend half or more of my time logged in soloing missions while chatting in global.) The one caveat is that most combos will be easier now than they were then since many changes have benefited the slower combos since then.

I'd like to highlight one thing about Repulsion Bomb:

  • It does more damage than Energy Torrent and Explosive Blast.
  • It only has a 40% chance to stun.
  • It has guaranteed Knock Down

Use it as an opener attack.

As for normal SO/IOs versus set IOs. I happen to have a level 40 Force Field/Energy Defender currently slotting him with level 40 basic IOs on his second build.

Should prove a decent test. Will return when I get to play with him a bit.

Any specific tests?

EDIT:
Current Build (has room for optimizing, but works for now)

Defense hovers in the 27% range for all three positions.
Ran a mission +0(x1) with bosses, Circle of Thorns.
Came upon a boss and a minion.
Aim->Repulsion Bomb->Explosive Blast->Energy Torrent.
Force Bolted the boss to keep him busy and focused on finishing off the minion.
The Death Mage immobilized me, but with judicious use of force bolt defeated him with no problems.
Though it did take a while.
Endurance was not a problem. I did end up using more than my scrapper would have, but never in any
danger of needing a blue.

Rest of the mission is biased, as a Bubbled Up Lady Jane helped.

Once I can get back on for longer periods I'll try to track down some Rikti and pay attention to the blue bar closer.

If you can spare the power pick i almost always take Combat Jumping on my Force Fielders, even the ones that Hover. The immobilization protection and bit of defense help quite a bit in many situations with a very low endurance cost.

Eh, thats steadfast +3% def is at most 5 million inf. Yeah, it might be a lot for some players, but anyone who has a level 50 can make 5 million in their sleep afk running into walls with a damage aura on.

Stupid question:

Are you running Ninja Jump and or a travel power while you fight?

I don't mean to be an ****, here, but...

When I read this thread, I thought it was a joke until page... four? I saw Ultimo's post count and really thought it was a funny gag.

I just blew a mental gasket.

I would help, but I think you may infect me.

Yes. His main build is packing ThunderStrikes, Red Fortunes, and other goodies. This is meant to be common IOs only.

As for Combat Jumping... it was a brain fart not to pick it.

True. But it wasn't like I was doing a huge IO set build. Just one lonely IO.
