quit to character select screen

Ok several times since I19 went live, I have used the *quit to character select screen* to switch toons. Each and every time, it has dropped me to the log in screen with the notification that *This account is already logged on* not to my character select and I have to click the "login" button to continue. Is this how it is supposed to work?

No, ideally it drops you back to the character selection screen. What you are experiencing is a bug.

Really? So far, I have not once been dropped directly to the character selection screen when choosing the option. I've always been sent back to the log in screen with the "your account is already logged in". I had thought it was an underwhelming feature, ie saving me from having to re-enter my password. And I've spent the past week cycling through all my characters to keep their Market slots filled with stuff to sell to the respeccers.

That "This account is already logged on" pop-up has been something I've seen periodically for years. It always happened whenever I tried to relog back in too quickly. Basically it takes the game server a few seconds longer to actually log you out regardless of what your client says. I think the "quit to character select screen" option does automatically what we used to be able to manually, which was to attempt to log back in too quickly.

I suppose you can consider this a bug, but it's technically a "bug" that's always been there.
Ironically if you have a fast computer this problem could be worse for you.

I wonder if it has something to do with multiple accounts?

I had one initial success with logging out to character select. Other times, I have not. I recently renewed my son's old account, and so I sometimes log in either account. However, I do have "save my account" or whatever the option is at the logon. The error message I get is something different, though, more like "unable to log into character select" or something more like that, so you're problem might be unrelated.

Yeah, it appears to be a sporadic bug to me. Sometimes it will work, but I have gotten the "This account is already logged in" message, as well as it dumping me back to the password screen with my username filled in, but no password, and a message telling me that I needed to enter a password.

As stated previously, it sounds like it's just logging out too quickly, and not correctly clearing the state before trying to log back in. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future patch. The whole point, really, was to speed up the relogin process, but maybe it may have to be made a tiny bit slower.

It happened to me the first day I loaded the patch , works fine now . Hope things are working now for you

I have had that bug happen *once* after over 100 quit to character select, log outs. No, that is not an exaggeration. I had to log in all of my toons on account number two for day job switching. =P

It is working just fine almost all of the time...on my end, anyways.

It's currently hit or miss for me too...

I get one of 3 results:

A> it actually works and puts me at the character screen

B> it tells me I'm already logged in, and I have to click the login button again.

C> it tells me I have to re-enter my password, so I have a blank password
field, which I have to fill-in again, and then click login.


As often happens with some of these teething problems -- Good Idea,
Crappy Implementation & Insufficient Testing.

Let's hope they can get it right, soon.

Which raises the question:

What's the Over/Under on the Game Devs getting that feature fixed
sooner than the Forum Devs fix the recurring logout issue???

About half the time I get the character selection screen, about half the time I get the login screen instead. A friend of mine says he gets the login screen about once every 3 or 4 times. So yeah, it's buggy, and more so for some people than others for some reason.

Bugs aside, I think this is one of coolest and longest overdue features.

This happened to me frequently even before I19. I would log out to the login screen, login with user/pass, and receive this message about already being logged in.

It almost seems like the error may be due to some internal server timing issue. The new feature probably logs you out and logs you back in automatically (instead of actually staying logged in and just shooting you over to the character select screen), but if the server still thinks you're logged in then you'll receive this error message. This is just my speculation based off my observations and not actual fact.

I have yet to successfully log out to the character select screen, either account, whether I am running one or both, etc. The only 'benefit' to me is to keep from having to re-enter my password.

There were a lot of times Pre-I19 that I would get that same message after logging out to login and entering my stuff back in. So i am not suprised.

I was messing around with this error this morning. I got it to consistently happen when I would logout cross-faction to what the log in screen was.

Meaning,
I log in on the "blue" City of Heroes screen and choose a villain to play - log out to character select results in error.

I log in on the "red" City of Villains screen and choose a hero to play - log out to character select results in error.

I log in on the "blue" City of Heroes screen and choose a hero to play - log out to character select results in successful transfer back to the character select screen.

I can't say that's the only problem with it, just a way I could get it to reliably happen.

It has never worked for me on the US or EU side.

It's working about 50-50 for me. Half the time it works correctly and takes me back to the character select screen, and half the time I'm told that my account is already logged in, at which point I need to hit "Log In" to log back in (my password is already filled out).
