There you go being "touchy Mr. BillZ" again.

Maybe you didn't read the threads I posted before your rather arrogant and self ego boosting thread hmm? Prior to your condescending response to my opinion on Claws, I don't think that I was in any way being touchy about anything. I responded to your first response to me with a bit of touchyness, but what did you expect with your written tone for one to react? Maybe you could use a class in being a tad more coordial or learn exactly what type of "tone" your written words can imply.

Need I remind you:

Power siphon only works with hits. If you set it off and then hit repulsing torrent, guess what isn't buffed? But we'll say you fired off focused burst first and give repulsing torrent a 25% buff.

Each will be slotted 1acc/1end-red/1rec-red/3dam and we'll use 150% damage buff from fury.

Shockwave Max Damage: (47.13 * 1+1.5+.95) * 10 = 1626 every 10.8 seconds. 150.6 DPS

Repulsing Torrent Max Damage: (33.4 * 1+.25+1.5+.95) * 10 = 1236 damage every 9 seconds. 137.3 DPS

Want me to do a comparison for claws/focus versus km/focused burst? Ok. <-------Condescending arrogant tone, completely uncalled for.

Focus: 63 in 1.17 seconds, 53.85 DPA
FB: 68.4 in 2 seconds, 34.2 DPA

Claws not a contender? Yea, whatever. Edit: And yes, the enemy resistance thing is overrated as well. <------Even more arrogant, condescending, and this time rude tone.
Your reply started off with at least some dignity and civility, but for some reason you felt the urge to add such condescendance, as though I directly said: "BillZ, you are WRONG, Claws is crap for damage, crap for ranged damage, and your family sucks." I mean seriously, relax.

I don't need to say whether or not my opinion was based on "feeling". Its quite clear that it was an "opinion" and not fact. Maybe you don't choose to absorb what you read? Let me quote it for you:

Hell Bill, I started off the friggen post and sentence with the fact that it was of MY opinion. An "opinion" is not an admittance of data, evidence, or fact. Here, definition for the thick:

o·pin·ion:

–noun
1. a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.
2. a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.

So yes, I did declare from the start that my thoughts were based on "feelings", otherwise known as opinions. No where did I include number crunching or data mining to back my theory, as it was an experience felt "opinion." So, in response to the rude reply you gave me; had you not been so ignorant and noticed that I clearly stated that my posts were of opinion and not fact, then I wouldn't have had to come here and correct your false beliefs on what was actually being said.

BillZ, I think your problem is that for some odd reason you feel as though you're some sort of godsend to this videogame and forum, and lets not deny it, I see it with every snobby condescending post you ever type, which is a good portion of them. Especially when it comes to Claws, lord when it comes to Claws. In reality Bill, you're just some dude sitting behind a keyboard wasting his day away on the forums, trying to respond with some sort of "elitist" tone because it makes you feel as though possibly you're accomplishing something in life or somehow better by snobbing others. I'm positive that the brown gunk that sputters from your rear is just as smelly and nasty as the brown gunk that sputters from everyone elses, so don't imagine or act as though your rear end is the main supplier of roses on Valentines Day.

If you disagree with something someone has to say, fine, show your evidence and numbers to prove that your way is right and to back your case. There is no need to belittle or talk condescendingly to someone in order to disagree and prove your side. If the person you responded to decides to go off on you then at that point feel free to be rude, condescending, or just plain mean. It's that simple. Just because this is an online message forum does not mean that you can't practice some sort of civility. Its like a "road-rage" mentality around here: just because I'm not standing in front of you, I'm 10 feet tall and can be a ******, I don't need to be civil or even humane at all...I think that anyone can be better than that. Maybe even you.

What powersets in Brute have the most ranged attacks? (yes, short range here counts, cause that's about all we got)

What AoE we got? Also, AoE is helpful. The more the merrier. Obviously these will usually be PBAoE.

So, which Epic Sets (and ancillary sets) will add to the I will get you at range sucka feeling?

oh, 4th part, which seconday helps with this either through AoE, or whatever else?
My favourite of this type would be something odd:

SS/EA/Mako

yup

No real blasting power at all untill the late 40s, so play as a different style till then, but with massive IO recharge I can very nearly chain the three Mako cones.

Individually, they're not the best AoE, but a constant stream of conical damage is withering with fury and rage from SS.

It's a brutally high end cost, thus /EA. With IO def it's not at all bad. Sure you have to leap into a spawn before it's totally melted to use energy drain, but that's just an excuse to use foot stomp afterwards.

Oh and if you do feel like bashing things, the ST melee damage isn't anything to complain about either.

EDIT: If I had him to do again, I might have taken claws or KM (they weren't around when this guy grew up), but meh... what I have works fine.

EDIT AGAIN: and no fire doesn't work, I've tried it and the cone is just to narrow to work well with the others... I found rage fueling the other cones to be better.

The cake is a lie! The cake is a lie!

It simply sheds light onto certain subjects and allows others to draw their own conclusions based on those numbers and opinions combined. What you're doing here, that is whats really silly, as you're not even involved in our discussion, you're simply adding your 2 cents worth of nothing and futher derailing a thread. BillZ being touchy doesn't bother me at all since he has a valid argument with valid numbers, but what does bother me is people such as yourself. The input on your last post and its contribution to this thread had no useful impact whatsoever, so why add it? Other than to troll, fan fires, and completely derail a thread what's the purpose? You have none. So no need to add your 2 cents.
You have zero credibility in the realm of forum etiquette. You are the first person in this thread to freak out at a post when you posted

BillZ, we all realize that you are practically married to Claws.
You're another in a long line of sad, pathetic, little tools that don't know how to acknowledge when they've been proven wrong. It's not hard. You either walk away from the thread or reply stating, "ok, fine, I see your point."

Nobody is buying your "I'm the innocent here" BS. Well, accept L3gend, apparently.

You might also consider a Fortunata or Crab Spider.

Both are/can be completely ranged (ranged is better than melee for both), with plenty of access to AoEs.

You can softcap them both to ranged at the bare minimum, and to all 3 positions with a bit of effort (The fort is easier to cap, but the Crab when capped can also have 50% SM/L Resistances as well as 40% resistance to everything else but psi. In addition you get serum for self heal & +extra HP).

You also get status protection, and enough group support to be welcome on any team.
^ This (although a Forts claws attacks are also worthwhile if you want to go that route too, a Fort can be a very viable mix of ranged single target, ranged AOE and melee claw attacks and PBAOE).

If you're looking for a Blaster with shields then a Fort is the way to go (or a crab, but I haven't played one myself).

Back on topic, if you're not set on going with a brute that sticks to range and want a ranged "blaster" with solid mitigation, whatever everyone else has stated about VEATs is true. I've got a hunstman build (no mace, no spiderlegs) SoA at 40, nothing but basic IOs and that's exactly what she plays like. Shoot 'em up, rarely get hit, mez protection, rarely dies. EDIT: I should note, VEATs are slow, some might say painful, to solo up until 24, but it ramps up nicely after that.

On the continuing topic of VEAT alternatives, try a Crabstermind.

What's a Crabstermind? A Crab Spider Soldier with the following powers:

TT: L
TT: M
TT: A
Call Reinforcements
Summon Spiderlings
Summon Blaster (Mace PPP)

Not only can you sit in the back and fling a veritable wall of death downrange, you have 6 pets to keep enemies occupied. And even if they do break through, you have a ton of defense and extremely respectable resistance to keep you in the game, as well as some nasty melee attacks.

My guides:Dark Melee/Dark Armor/Soul Mastery, Illusion Control/Kinetics/Primal Forces Mastery, Electric Armor
"Dark Armor is a complete waste as a tanking set."

I absolutely love my Huntsman (50). Add in pets from the set and from the mace PPP and it has a tough, blastery, mastermindish feel to it.

I dunno, my first VEAT soloed up to 24 quicker than any character I've run in recent memory; that may be due to enhanced compatibility with my play-style and enthusiasm at something new, however.

What about this:

Kinetic Melee primary: focused burst, repulsing torrent.

Super Reflexes: Nothing lost for being at range rather than melee.

Soul Mastery: Cone immobilize to keep torrent from flinging people around too much, Gloom for the attack chain and a sweet targetted ranged AOE.

Agreed. I had a Widow that I didn't care much for pre-24. On respec, went for a heavy emphasis on range/AoE with a Fortunata build. Later, got blinded by rage soloing a mission filled with robots (which are heavily resistant to Psi damage), respec'd into a Widow build that was amazingly good. Basically a Claws/SR scrapper with friggin' awesome team buffs and the ability to crit from hide.

While I don't have personal experience, I've teamed with several Crabs that were AoE monsters. It's a really excellent choice for a combo of ruggedness and range/AoE. And as has been mentioned before, the team buffs mean you're welcome on any team.

Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.

They will crit, but it seems they have a flat 5% chance to do so, which isn't adjusted by enemy rank. I know I've seen them crit, but they don't do it very often.

Incidentally, Boxing and Air Superiority will also crit. I imagine Flurry and Jump Kick will as well, but I don't think I've ever taken either power on a scrapper.

The only things that won't crit on a scrapper are Brawl and temp powers.

Claws/Anything/Fire or Soul will probably be the best bet for a ranged brute.

I'm gonna have to disagree with this whole Claws thing, on two principles.

First, it's not blastery-looking at all.

Second, won't the redraw make any ranged attack chain really stiff and cumbersome?

Don't get me wrong, I love claws and have claws characters (okay, just one), but it doesn't seem to fit the bill in this case.

Not blastery looking? Agreed.

Redraw being detrimental numerically? We'd have to do a complete attack chain analysis to find out if, say, claws+PPP is less than km+PPP because of claws redraw. However, back when I thought that scrappers would get brute PPP, I looked at what adding gloom to a claws attack chain would do considering how awesome gloom is, but the numbers didn't back up the hope when claws' redraw animation time was added to the chain.

Is redraw clunky, ugly and annoying apart from the numerical analysis, I would most assuredly agree 100%.

I truly believe the OP would be happier with a VEAT than a knee-capped brute.

It all makes me wonder why it's even still in the game. Who thinks redraw is enhancing the "experience" aside from some obstinate developer glowering in the glow of a monitor in a dark computer lab somewhere?

To be fair to the developers, and prior to his being let go, BAB had come very close to removing redraw in combat completely but ran into some kind of heavy roadblock.

So I know of at least two devs that backed the concept of completely removing redraw.

IIRC it was that the weapon needed to go through "redraw" in order for the weapon's model to spawn in the hand.

That's true, Fort's can also have excellent melee chains as well.

Good catch.

Danged, I forgot all about VEATs. I leveled my Crab to 50 in 5 days on Freedom when they first came out. (The fastest 50 was like 2 1/2 days lol) I never played him again after that, well, maybe once. My opinion has been Crabs work best on Crab teams, so I just parked the big fat guy. I started my Brute Claws. i used the big hands and Fortunata claws to cover the claw animations, still hate the sound/redraw/feel. I went Claw/Invul, cause i wasnt brave enough to try electric armor, and thought claws would not be an end eater (my constant prob with invul)

Since then I started a Kin/Regen scrap. I like him, love his look. (yes, altitis is a disease, anybody got a cure?) I'll probably stay with him, er mebbe, I never leveled a scrap past mid 30s I realized. My Brute Kin/Will I decided was just wrong, parked him at 20, cause Kin is antithesis to Will healing.

I do not think he will be my "ranged tough guy" -mebbe I will try Epics. Always wanted a Squid Redside, they look like H P Lovecraft monsters anyways. Whoever thought they were heroic took way too many drugs and studied way too little fictional archetypes. Bad combo in a character designer.

Crabs are a great addition to any team.

You should definitely give your Crab another whirl.
