More on Glee Rocky Horror
The music is was hooked me. The elder bro had a bootleg copy of the movie's audio on reel to reel that I listened to obsessively growing up. (Thus why I knew so much before ever seeing it.)
Be well, people of CoH.
Also if I'm right, wouldn't this be the most mainstream pop culture exposure of the movie since it first came out?

Though it the Rocky Horror bit was shorter, it lives on in syndication.

Now there's a mashup for Glee, Time Warp/Shake Your Groove Thing. They could even do it in full drag!

The Drew Carey episode sounds classic.

Probably. Rocky Horror is generally thought of as a cult film that became successful because of the interaction from the audience. You either seen it multiple times and loved it, seen it once and hated it or your a virgin.
While VH-1 did do a 25th anniversary special 10 years ago with some of the original cast along with actors like Anthony Head (who once played Frank in the stage production) singing the various songs from it,it never appeared to my knowledge on any of the movie networks or other cable channels ever. Except for preceding or following the special. Well it may have been on once or twice since. I think it's because it needs to be experienced in person with full audience interaction to really enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, I think the music is great and you can analyze the clever use of classic science fiction tropes to illustrate what conservative social culture considered to be "evil". But playing the movie straight with none of the meta experience just makes it an odd, "bad" movie musical. |
As has been stated here, there's a good chance this will expose Rocky to the "new" generation. Even if it's not as as good, it's a gateway drug. Also, if you're a fan of Ryan Murphy's episodes of Glee (Such as Brittany/Britney), you are probably the exact kind of person that must be shown Rocky.
I'm disappointed in the changes, but it's not an absolute wash.

I saw the film first then a large group of us went to see a stage performance.
Being a somewhat portly man I lacked the figure for a Frank N Furter outfit BUT I am a 'meatloaf' build so that allowed me to dress up as Eddie, however friend went Full Frank and even had help from his fiance to learn how to walk/dance in high heels.
Though we did have to go to some...interesting...shops to pick up stilletos in a male size 12 (UK shoe sizes different to US, just thought I'd note, 12 1/2 US size apparently) and the rest of the outfit, amazingly friendly staff though.
Thankfully London has an area called Camden aka 'the central London area of weirdness' where there are a range of interesting shops.
Yeah it is about the audience participation, to the point where someone in the crowd is 'designated heckler' (a friend was asked to be the heckler) so the narrator can provide snappy improv comebacks at him to the insults he threw.
Everyone danced, everyone joined in for the songs and on the whole was a really great night.
I'd recommend to anyone to go see it live and preferably dress up if you do, remember you don't always have to go Full Frank, you can always just be Eddie.
Edit:
For those of you that haven't seen/heard the original movie version (it started as a stage production before becoming a movie with the cast of the original stage production, then once the movie was done, went back to being a stage production)Here is the Tim Curry original of Sweet Transvestite

Edit: And an amazing inside joke for both the Elbow Sex and Artie's blocking during a certain moment. They put a lot of nods to the hardcore Rocky fans in that video, but I can't explain them all in polite company.
Kurt is an extraordinary Riff Raff.
That's exactly what I thought when I first saw it.

I might re watch it in fishnet stockings and a corset.
The Kronos has a hold n00b!
Ah that does explain it.
The movie is rated 15 here (equivilent to your PG-13 I guess...). |
But then Rocky Horror (both stage show and movie) are seen somewhat as an institution here in Britain. Rocky Horror is actually quite a high pick for the 'end of year' Drama school production during the College years (we start College at 16 here in the UK). |

The suck coming off of that video was so intense that a singularity formed.
Be well, people of CoH.
I watched it. I'm glad I watched it. Now I know I'll never have to sit through an episode of Glee.

I'm guessing that "Wasn't initially interested" or "doesn't have a lot of free time" also factored in a bit.
Edit: I think the direction in that scene was terrible, but it's Ryan Murphy. Try one of the more subtle episodes, like Duets.
I'm a lover of music and dig several musicals out there. Hell, I slap in JCSS just to listen to Carl Anderson sing "Heaven on Their Minds."
But that? Let's put on a badly blocked musical number with multiple people playing a single role, sing it poorly (especially the chick doing Magenta's bit) (note: none of the voices were bad, but the delivery was atrocious) with characters on stage that hadn't even shown up in the story yet? What?
Yea, I'm glad that a new generation will be exposed to RHPS, but I would have preferred it done in a way that didn't leave me saying, "Wow... that was really bad."

1) Multiple people playing a single role: We have no idea why that's done. It may be explained, it may not be. Perhaps it's a plot point that the two ladies both wanted the Columbia part.
2) Characters that hadn't even shown up in the story yet: Again, we have no idea why this is done. If you knew Glee better, you'd know that the direction and scene setting (Just Will watching them from the back of the auditorium) is the traditional closing of the episode. With that in mind, my theory was this:
"The school shuts down the show, nothing goes as planned, and the kids/Will lose out. The kids are hurt, but Will is completely and absolutely crushed. Attempting to cheer Will up, they perform this number to show him how much they appreciated his efforts to put the show on. They choreograph the number without anyone's help in order to show him that they are still dedicated to future projects."
and for extra measure...
"One of the reasons the show was shut down was after Brittany/Tina argued so much over who got to play Columbia. In an act of restitution, they split stage time during this scene."
Are those what happened? I have no idea, but they're what happens when I opt to give them the benefit of the doubt. You didn't. Using your prediction that the thing you haven't seen yet won't fit your expectations is a bit disingenuous, assuming I have any idea what that word means.
Badly blocked and poorly delivered I can go with. I hated the way the shots were cut*, and it wasn't my favorite number.
Still. Kurt as Riff-Raff.
Also, I need JCSS on my iTunes. Like... yesterday.
Yes, we get the kids are moving with the back music during Magenta's solo. Please stop cutting away to show that... PLEASE!
This season hasn't really been as good as the first. The first season was well planned out in terms of songs and relevance to plot and all the subtle looks or cuts to emphasize character bits where well timed. Second season has been one 'its the X episode' after another with plot being strung along to fit the theme of the week instead of the other way around.
So seeing a second season episode is very different than seeing a better planned first season episode and would taint your view of the show considerably.
I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.
True, the first season did have all the baby drama, Will's marriage/divorce and the courting of Emma plus the stated purpose of getting to regionals with this hodgepodge group of students.
This season the success went to the show's head. More episodic, less connective. Minor drama with the Artie/Tina breakup and Quinn's return and Santana's demotion. They need to get back to a season long story and build episodes around it.
It went from fun quirky to commercial success. Lets pump out some more music for iTunes and the next CD.
