S/L defense for doms - worth it?

How good is being defense-capped for S/L? Is it worth slotting for that and how effective is it for a dom? I was planning to go that route and also get permadom in my lvl50 build.

If you can actually softcap S/L AND get Permadom, go for it... Although somehow I doubt that will be easy.

You don't see many doms building for +Defense because they are building for Permadom instead.

I soft-capped my S/L defense on my Ice/Earth Dom. 2 days later, I respec'd him 4 times to get the IOs out and into a toon that could use them better. It was so very much not worth soft-capping his S/L defense. Your mileage may vary, of course... but I had to sacrifice a heck of a lot of recharge and endurance reduction to get soft-capped and in the end the build was so endurance-heavy I simply couldn't play it. I was out of endurance after only a handful of attacks.

If you can do it without sacrificing too much in other areas... it's nice.

I have been a firm believer in +resistance shields and softcap to range for a long time. Having 22+ doms I can experiment with different type of defensive/resistance type builds.

My new Plant/Psi build now is soft cap to both range and s/l with about 161 for recharge. The alt build for my toon has about 18 dmg procs, softcap to s/l and about 171 recharge. T

Taking into account that both of these builds are "I19 ready" there is no fitness pool. Softcap to S/L can be done without gimping your toon, but it takes a lil more creativity to do. But my current toon can do +2 8, ambushes endless with no insps. can do +4 8 with insps though.

A lot of my other friends with Doms quickly moved to softcap to S/L right after the great BOTZ nerf :-(. Having moved to this new def build I am happy with its performance. So yes I think the + def is worth it.

May I also add that I think the most surviable dom now has /psi and /ice mastery.....

Most doms can perma dom and hit s/l softcap with minimal build sacrifice. It may be a bit costly, but not exorbitant.

It is very strong. Though between the two perma dom is stronger than s/l softcap if you were in a position where it was one or the other.

I would agree with what most are saying.. I tend to build for +defense first on most of my toons. (what kind of defense depends on the toon (S/L, ranged))

But in regards to Doms I go with try to make a build with permadomination first.. then work at trying to S/L and see where you can go. In most cases you don't have to cap defense since you're holding most stuff down. But anything in the 30-45 range does well as long as your domination is perma. IMO

My elec/ Earth final plan will be permadom / softcapped S/L, now with the i19 changes coming, its alot easier if you're willing to take a few mules, but I had this build planned for i18 anyway, which has allowed me to take a few more for fun powers with i19 changes.

Totally depends on the powersets whether or not it would involve sacrificing a whole lot.
I just respecced my Fire/Psi into a S/L capped build and with a coupla more sets should be perma dom, even without perma dom, I'd rather have the survivabilitly then extra hold/+ mez protection. With S/L defense and Drain Psyche (and no stamina til I19) I need to constantly use Drain Psyche everytime its up, but its definately worth it IMO.

Psi Assault would definately be my choice of secondary to use if you're gonna cap S/L def though since Drain Psyche will provide the End to manage your toggles and the backup Regeneration to help the non-S/L attacks you will face.

I was able to do both PermaDom and soft cap S/L with my Fire/Fire...it was quite expensive, but he is a beast.

Don't I know you???

I think it's worth it. My Mind/Fire is softcapped to S/L and has Permadom without Hasten.

Actually I've had reports from both so one might be either a clone, his praetorian double, a temporal paradox, evil twin, or a Nemesis Automaton-o-matic (tm).

As tot he topic at hand, I consider my holds, sleeps, confuses, and generally causing the enemy to die to be the primary form of defense my dominators worry about. S/L or Ranged defense as a number, is nifty, but not something I build for intentionally. Lots of otherwise good sets have some though.

Definitely worth it, and I think pretty much every dom can at least cap S/L def along with getting perma dom. It's not necessary for normal play, but then again neither are IO builds. But it's pretty fun to do it.

I've seen ways to get capped ranged def too without losing perma dom, and like one of the above posters said, it's apparently possible to cap both and still have perma dom (presumably using a lot of purples tho).

Active (Freedom): Setna (Ice/Psi Dom), Arram (WP/KM Tank), Tesmiel (Elec/SS Tank), Astredax (Robot/Dark Mastermind), Operative Vidali (melee fortunata)

Retired (Virtue): Gaav (Inv/EM Tank), Baqra (Fire/SS Tank)

Silas' demonstrating that it was not actually that hard to combine perma-Dom with S/L softcap inspired me to make this build for my Earth/Thorns/Mace. No purples are used (though there's room to slot them in several powers if I get the inf for them eventually), but I do use one set of Kinetic Combat and four LotG Recharges. I've found that the defense is a major boon, especially playing on a big team where control is likely to be less than perfect.
