Farming?

I see a lot of posts here about Farming, Farming Builds and Farming Techniques. Some great builds and great advice is in those threads.

My question is, aside from personal enjoyment derived from a particular play style - which is personal to each player and beyond judgement as such - what is the point of farming? I hear a lot of people talking about farming for Influence, which seems like a slow and painful way to earn Influence compared to the market.

Is it for purples? I have yet to see any drop on my characters, though I have only two level 50s, so I don't have a tonne of range there.

Farming is a legacy way to earn lots of influence by clearing a "padded" map (for either 6 or 8 people) in the shortest possible time. It is also used for powerleveling low level toons.

These days playing the market is (from what I hear) a better way to make influence, and as far as powerleveling goes, it (IMO) should only be done by veteran players who already have experience with said powerlevel'd AT.

Purples, Prestige and Tickets.

For people that don't understand or dislike playing the market I would imagine influence would be a factor to farm.

*Good point about PLing Silver*

Point? None that i know off.

Well, I suppose it's to gain reward without experiencing the game itself, so....see prior sentence.

Fast AE farming can get you 1500 tickets every 10 minutes. At that rate you can generate a TON of influence from gold, silver and bronze rolls, as well as influence from the defeats. You can make hundreds of millions of influence in just a couple of days from a little bit of playing.

Perfect for people who don't want to play the market for whatever reason and it also works out nicely if you do a little of both. Probably better over time than trying for purples, as well.

Marketing it probably faster than farming for influence earning if you know what you're doing.

I could be wrong of course, but I think the number of people that spend all or the vast majority of their time doing only one thing is pretty small nowadays. The market may be the new "best" way to earn inf, but sometimes I feel like beating up on vast hordes ala farming, sometimes I do TF, sometimes I run through story arcs, sometimes I do AE...Think you get the idea. You can still earn respectable rewards any of those ways, imho.

Don't forget farm haters, that if it weren't for people farming for the influence, there wouldn't be all that money in the market place for us all to make profits in.

Not intending to come across as a "farm hater", just didn't see the point to it.

The PLing makes sense though - after a while, you just want to get your new characters to 22 fast.

When you reach 50 you realized farming is probably the only end game you have.
Basically 'is my gear ready to clear +2/x8 of <insert farm>?'
