Spines...

I want to like Spines.

Really, I do.

But so far, it's the only Scrapper Primary that I have just not gotten into.

So... rather than dismiss this out of hand, I shall turn to the experts here...

How do you get into and enjoy the Spines set? What do you pair it with? How do you play it? How do you level it?

Any advise for making an enjoyable flinger of pointy, poisonous barbs would be appreciated...

Maybe if you described what turns you off?

How can we recommend anything if you don't provide reasons you are failing to enjoy the set.

When something good happens to me, I can never enjoy it....
I am always too busy looking for the inevitable punchline...

That's just it... I don't know.

Oh, it's a bit annoying that it doesn't have a real single target chain, but I make do with Electric Melee just fine.

It's first attack is Barb Swipe... so... yeah... I generally end up not taking it at all.

It's just... every attempt I've made at Spines/ peters out before level ten, and I've ended up deleting them.

I'm hoping to hear some other opinions of the set, and get motivated to it. I'm getting kinda blah with most the others, want to wait with KM until the herd thins... and thought maybe it time to try Spines again.

For all that talk of Electric Melee's lack of single target, I still find it way ahead of Spines lack of Single Target (this is assuming you use JL on single targets as well).

And that may be your problem. I know I'd much rather play an awesome single target set with a lack of AOE (except for Dark Melee, it just bores me, but I blame that on the animations), than Spines AOE goodness and lack of single target.

Best bet...skip it and move on!

Spines pretty much needs lunge, impale and ripper to have a half decent single target chain. Ripper comes at 26 so, that'll take a while.

Definitely wouldn't want to run a spines in praetoria with how long it takes spines to get good.

Agreed. It's a long road to get to ripper and throw spines. It took me a few years to finally get past the original ugly spines. I decided to go with spines / dark to go for AOE. I wasn't looking to farm or anything....just wanted a fun AOE build that could chew through minions like butter. You hit a point after throw spines is slotted with quills and a damage aura set....that standard missions are crazy fast except when it comes to a boss.....then it slows down some. Doable certainly but it sometimes feels like you are hacking away a boss while everyone else just goes away fast. It fun......if you can hang in there.

FYI - the end drain coupled with dark armor is pretty bad if you are running and gunning. You'll have to slot and IO your way to end happiness. I am considering rolling up a new spines electric just for kicks now that you've got me all worked up and talking about it.

Ya, my spines has the bosses set to spawn as leuts. Makes things much easier.

My first scrapper was spines... and I completely understand. I'll get him to fifty soon enough though. I went with Spines/Regen, which is great for farming, unfortunately, I don't farm...

I find the problem with spines is the long cast times on most of the powers. It makes the set feel really lumpy to me.

My Spines/Fire took off after I had Quills, Blazing Aura, and Stamina, and had it slotted with SOs.

Yes, it's single target damage sucks, but it's one of few sets that you can get through missions with by literally just standing there. Multiple damage auras rock, so I would pair it with Fire (which just got loads better), Electric, or Dark (classic combination)

Since you kept deleting them by level 10 you haven't witnessed the awesome that is Throw Spines followed by jumping into a mob and hitting Spine Burst while your auras tick away. (Also of note, with Quills running, your spines stay out, so it eliminates the majority of the redraw when you do things like hit a heal)

My favorite is Energy Torrent>Throw Spines>hop in and Spine Burst>Ripper.

Try it with Build-Up Sauce™!

I've never been able to "convince" myself that Ripper was an AoE. As far as I can tell, Quills and the wide arc of Throw Spines are the only things that make it all that AoE-ie.

50 Spines/Dark
50 Spines/Fire
45 Spines/Regen
12 Spines/Electric

Ripper will hit 5, reliably so if you get them packed in tight, which is the same as every other melee cone (Flashing Steel, Slice, Eviscerate, Sweeping Strike, Jacob's Ladder, Shadow Maul, Crowd Control, Pendulum, though I think the last 2 might hit more targets)

Hitting more than one target makes things AoEs by definition, so Ripper is an AoE by those standards. It also takes PBAoE damage sets. Technically, Head Splitter and Golden Dragonfly are AoEs as well, but they are a lot harder to hit more than one target with because their cone is so narrow.

THANK you for explaining basic cone mechanics to me. <sarcasm off> I SAID it was a matter of me convincing MYSELF. If I don't do it right, it doesn't FEEL like AoE. MY problem. MAYBE an issue for others. Not everyone is a CoH god like you.

Gee, someone's cranky today.

I was just trying to be helpful and you come back with a boatload of snark.

Guess I'll just go back to being a dick, at least then I'd DESERVE responses like this.

How about you spend a couple seconds trying to figure out someone's intentions before biting their head off next time?

For all I knew you had never fired off Ripper in a crowd and didn't realize it hit more than one target. You'd be surprised what some longtime players don't know, I learn new stuff all the time. And I don't get insulting when people try to help me with something they didn't realize I already knew.

QFT. My Spines/DA scrapper is a minion mowing machine. Once the minions melt it's just a ripper and an impale to out the lt's.

Spines/ D A lvl 50 Scrap, stone/wm lvl 50 tank, Kat/reg lvl 50 Scrap
Grav/Kin lvl 50 Cont, Fire/Enegry lvl 50 Blast

Perhaps you're right. Maybe my response was built in based on my perception of your know-it-all/done-it-all/above-it-all attitude. My response might have been as simple as "Please read the post" but having thought about it I admit that I could have been more clear as to what I meant by "convincing myself". I was addressing a concern of a player who seems to have "issues" with the way the set plays. I have issues as well. I KNOW that Ripper/Headsplitter/Eviscerate/Golden Dragonfly are CAPABLE of multiple hits, making it by definition an AoE. My inability to reliably COUNT on it for AoE goodness does, however, limit that goodness in my mind. To hell with the numbers, if you can't FEEL it, you're not going to be happy with it.

Anyway, my apologies.

I wouldn't compare Ripper to something like Crowd Control and Pendulum with their big Arcs though.

...upto lvl 10. I wouldn't consider a set defined at that low level. The OP needs to join a farm run run by (preferably) spines/fire and observe the potential of the set Just an idea.

No worries, I go off the deep end myself on occasion responding to people, so I know how it is. Someone says something that just gets under your skin and you fire off a respnse without really thinking about what all you're saying. It happens.

In my case, I get angry quickly, but I cool off just as quickly. So, I go back later and look at something I posted and think "Why was I so mad about that again?"

(using the proverbial "you" there)

I've seen a couple Spines/Dark in action, so I have an idea of what the set is capable of. I just never seem to be able to make one stick out until it gets good.

...

Although... with the recent changed to /Fiery Aura, the combo sounds like a walking wall of destruction in the later levels...

...

Does Fiery Embrace work with Damage Auras? Because if so, Blazing Aura + Quills + Fiery Embrace would be just ridiculous...

I love spines, but I don't love the animations for Barb Swipe, Impale, and Ripper. They're not ET long but I could almost finish making a pb and j sandwich before they're done animating.
