Spines...

Rusty math skills and a guess here but here goes:

Blazing aura: 13.8 dmg per tick at level 50 fiery embrace adds 45% or 6.21 fire dmg to the base damage meaning its enhanceable

new dmg when feiry embrace is on without enhacements is 13.8+6.21=20.01 per tick

now add 100% dmg from enhancements 27.6+12.42=40.02 per tick

build up adds another 100% onto the base 41.4+18.63=60.03 per tick

Quills: 10.3 dmg at level 50 with fiery embrace adding 45% or 4.635 fire dmg to the base dmg

new dmg with fiery embrace on is 10.3+4.635=14.935 per tick

with 100% dmg from enhancements 20.6+9.27=29.87 per tick

with build up on 30.9+13.905=44.805 per tick

TLDR:

combined tick dmg with quills and blazing aura with no enhancements and fiery embrace on is 34.945

combined tick dmg with 100% dmg from enhancements and fiery embrace on is 69.89

combined tick dmg with build up, enhancements, and fiery embrace is 104.835

This is just what a spines/fire does with just his auras, fiery embrace, and build up. This does not include spine burst, throw spines, or burn. Enjoy and if my math is off feel free to correct me.

Does Fiery Embrace work with Damage Auras? Because if so, Blazing Aura + Quills + Fiery Embrace would be just ridiculous...
The nice thing about this game is the flexibility in power choices. If you can't seem to be able to make one stick out, just move along. However, you shouldn't judge a set at lvl 10...just saying. I have 27 L50s and tons more at 30s and 40s. I like the variety

Yeah, I know. I'm just trying to work myself up to giving it another try.

I'm going to try a Spines/Fire scrapper. Too bad I can't figure out how to get significant S/L defense without dropping something I want...

4 slot lunge with Kinetic Combat. Use 1 slot each to Spine Burst and Ripper for that 6th Obliteration slot.
Shields and Tough should be four slotted with Reactive Armor.
Remove Rise of the Phoenix and instead take 3 slotted Weave, slot them with 3 LotG.
Change ios for Consume, put in Mocking Beratement from Taunt...basically you only need recharge on Consume...no need for end mod...as you will be using that in a group and that will fill your end bar.
I would also take 1 slot from Healing Flames (Heal/End) and move to Fire Shield and add in Steadfast -KB.
Also take 1 slot from Fiery Embrace, 2 is enough with Hasten, add to Stamina (go with 4 performance shifter: EndMod, EndMod/Rech, EndMod/Acc, +End).
Change Steadfast Protection -KB from Temperature Protection and instead put in Steadfast Protection Res/+Def.
For Impale, you can also slot 6 Thunderstrikes instead of Devastation.

I'm still waiting on Ice Armor to make the Spines/Ice I have in mind. Bleh, I hope I19 has power proliferation in it.

You can't use Mocking Beratement in Consume. And I am not going to take Confront for it.

And I want Rise of the Phoenix. Even with 25% S/L defense and healing flames, I'll probably be faceplanting enough to warrant it.

I'll look into the other changes...

Spines is hard to get into because it is really, really weak until late in the game - you need most of its powers for it to be effective and fun. But later on when you have all your aoe goodness and the endurance to use it, it's a very fun set, especially on teams. It's definitely the weakest single target set, by a lot, but it's also the best aoe set, if you have the patience to get there.

Be the Bomb.

Think of Rise of the Phoenix as another attack. Its also a very powerful attack when slotted for damage at around 650 damage. I've never understood why people get so upset about death in the game. This is probably why I never ever want to do a master run attempt of anything ever.

Look at it this way. Your playing a mission with your team. Around the corner is a huge group with at least four malta sappers in it. Your tank gets all whiny because hes gonna have to soak that alpha and its probably gonna make him as useful as veteran imp summon. You look down at your powers bar and see that RotP is up. You let your team know that you've got this. You activate fiery embrace and build up as you charge in. You jump right in the middle using throw spines in mid air and as you land you hit spine burst. They do enough damage to drop you. You hit RotP and kaboom. The sappers should be gone as should anything thats not a boss. Bonus points if the enemies have long recharging debuffs and just wasted them on you. Either way problem solved.

There's only one slight problem with this style of play. There are some teams that simply cannot grasp the concept that you don't need them to rush in after you to save you.

That was my basic idea... although I won't have the slots to get its damage up to those levels. Still, I think it will be an excellent addition... Especially in a set designed to get you back to full right away. (RotP returns 50% health and Endurance. By the time I can pick it up, Healing Flame should be healing about half my hp, and Consume will recover the rest of my endurance with only... 2 targets, I think.) Might not be a god mode - which aren't extremely useful in and of themselves, especially for Scrappers - but it's an excellent "Keep Going" power that fits my expectations.

You are awesome and honestly I forgot about healing flames and consume bringing you back to full. Its even better because you have 15 seconds on invulnerability to take care of it in. If you have healing flames slotted for recharge as well as healing and you triggered it as you were getting back up with RotP it would be recharged should you need it again shortly after the invuln ends. I guess I'm too used to using it as a blaster.

Somewhat related:

There any way to get Ice Armor for Scrappers on the list of Secondaries in Mids? I'd like to make a Spines/Ice build for myself without completely destroying the program if possible.

Ahh forgot that you don't have taunt features in Consume on scrapper version. I would add then 6 slotted Obliteration set.

As for RotP, that's upto you. I disagree about faceplanting enough though.

The waaaaaaiiiiiting is the haaaaaarrrrdeeest... part.

Yep, been waiting for that forever. And /ice for brutes!

I wouldn't be against /Ice for Brutes. Might not help their Fury, but I wouldn't put that restriction out there.

I think my top Scrappers that I want to make that I cannot currently are Spines/Ice and War Mace/Shield Defense. Please please please let there be power proliferation in I19.

Sigh. Curse you people.

I clicked on this thread out of sheer morbid curiosity because, for me, I could never get into spines for getting past the "Bananas pop out of nowhere" appearance. I forgot that Power Customization fixed this until about mid-way through reading.

By the time I reached the last post I had fully conceptualized a new Spines/something steampunk scrapper with metallic "spikes". I really did not need another alt

I'm still bouncing around the notion on the secondary. Elec is the best thematic fit, but Fire can't be discounted either. Maybe even /Dark, but I'm not a fan of Dark Armor's playstyle.

Anyway, off to play with Mids.

Would be nice if I could play around with a Spines/Ice build in Mids.

And yes, power customization is the one big factor that made me even consider the set for the first time. Well, second I guess, since the first time I considered it I probably said, "Banana Melee? No thanks!"

You know, an ice/spines tank would be pretty nice too.... I will probably make pretty much every iteration of that option once it becomes available. Maybe even a stalker...

I thought it weird that Tanks never got Broadsword after Shield Defense. Board and Sword is a classic "Tank" loadout in a lot of MMOs.

True. It's weird... on one hand, I hope they don't proliferate *everything*, just so each archetype has at least one set that it will never share. At the same time, I don't want that set to be Ice Armor... but ice/ice is all tanks have left. So ugh.

Of course not, I want it too!
I'm just saying that, "morally" (in a very weird sense of it, if that groks), part of me wants to fight it so tanks can keep something "sacred" as it were. But the bigger part of me would rather freeze AND poison stuff to death.

I'll join the spines/ice crowd, I've been wishing for the combination since power proliferation was first discussed. Plus with customization, you can make spines look MORE like bananas. I'll probably make a spines/ice something named Bananas Froster.

...and then make one with a name that I can live with.
