Beginner skills appropriate for me!
Hello! I'm currently downloading the game and therefore cannot explore the variety of spells available and would therefore like to know what kind of skills are "all around" good and appropriate to a Infamous kind of character? (Lightning, no swords, guns and so on)
Sincerely. |
Paragonwiki
This game doesn't have spells or skills. You should check out the following link and read up on what types of characters you can make.

Probably going to be a defender then, with focus on offensive spells! (Offender )
EDIT: Oh I forgot! What server do you recommend? Most friendly and helpful player-base?
Sincerely.

One combo I particularly like with Electricity is Sonic Resonance. Which it's not a strong offensive set, it's strong enough on a Corruptor to make it, and I happen to think the sonic bubbles have a subtle similarity to electrics, if you change the colors. However, it may be tough going, you may not like it.
In short, if you want to be offensively oriented at all times, go with the Corruptor. If you want to have strong offense when solo, but trade it in on more team utility when you're on a team, go with the Defender. You'll also have a little more luck with the Defender if you stick with sets like Radiation Emission, Kinetics, Storm, and Dark Miasma.
You might be looking for a Corruptor instead of a Defender. The two have very close to the same capabilities, when both are built for offense, but the Defender will be MUCH better, when built for defense. Your Infamous character throwing around lightning would be an Electric Blast, and with that you can either go with Kinetics, or if you want to be a "weather wizard" type, Storm Summoning.

Terrific suggestions/explanations from J-D there - I was gonna say that in general, you wanna be careful about trying to twist an AT to be something it's not. If you wanna defend, be a Defender... if you want to blast, be a Blaster... if you wanna be in control, be a Controller.
Trying to turn a Defender into a Blaster is (no offense intended), a common "rookie" mistake, that can potentially leave you with a character that's really just a sucky Defender AND a sucky Blaster.
This, in fact, is really about the only way you can possibly "gimp" a character in CoH.
Now, as J-D says, the Vill ATs are a bit more versatile in that respect. The Corruptor's a cross between a blaster & defender, the Brute's a cross between a Tank & Scrapper, etc.
p.s. lemme just mention that, To Each His Own, but after playing for years and trying just about every possible AT and power set combo, my ALL-TIME FAVORITE Archetype is and will always be an Illusion/Storm Controller. It's Chaos in a Can - pop the top n WHOOOOOOOSH stand back!
If you're really looking for a lightning powered character with something to it other than just the plain damage you'd get from an electric/electric blaster might I suggest an electric controll/electric assault dominator.
You'd have some control and a nice mix of both melee and ranged damage that way.
MA Arcs: Yarmouth 1509 and 58812

I wouldn't describe Storm as a "Beginner" set. There aren't a lot of sets that can accidentally grief your team, but Storm is one of them.
Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.
So you think you're a hero, huh.

If you're a quick-on-the-uptake, conscientious player Storm Summoning is all kindsa powerful and all kindsa fun - but if you're still figuring things out, might wanna start with something a little less potentially disruptive.
Like I said, "Chaos in a Can". If you can wrangle the chaos enough to not upset your teammates, good on ya'.
If not, steer clear for now.
Having never played an MMO ever, excepting this one, I'm always amazed at how confused I get when people talk about spells, guilds, and similar fantasy-based items.
BTW, WELCOME!
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
Once you've the basic mechanics down you may want to try other AT's (our version of classes) and powersets. All AT's can be very capable but some are more demanding of player skill and game knowledge than others.
COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes

Wow, I didn't expect this many answers, thank you all! Very helpful forum. I may try a scrapper then, to learn the ways of the game and later decide if I want to go like something else. By the way, this guys PM'ed about joining the server Virtue but I can't seem to find it in the server selection, just Defiant (?), another english server (not Virtue) and two german servers. How do I join virtue?
nooo, you're going to spoil the new kid for regular play!

If you live in Europe and have purchased the European version of the game all is fine, join either Union or Defiant (Union used to be much more populated than Defiant a few years back, but I hear things are much more closer now). If you live in America and have purchased the American version, you should download the American client.
If you live in Europe and have purchased the American client, be aware that although American servers are more populated than the European ones, you will likely be playing during off-hours because of the timezone difference. If you live in America and have purchased the European client... I'd try to get a refund in your place.
You can't, because if what you say is happening, you are using the European game client. The European and American servers are separated, and with one account you can only play on either the European or the American ones (this is determined by your purchase).

Seems like right then, I live in europe and I'm playing on the european servers.

Of the 2 English speaking servers, Union is the more populated one (and the unofficial role playing server if you're into that.) But the pop difference with Defiant isn't *that* big.
Vigilance is the French server
Zukunft is German.

Co-leader of Callous Crew SG. Based on Union server.

Just so you know, while there's nothing wrong with the European servers, they do have a significantly lower population than the American servers, and quite a few less. They have 4 and we have 11.
There are several EU players that have chosen to get an NA account so they can have access to 11 servers and the larger player base. Some I believe have an account on both. So if after playing a while you feel you'd like something a little busier, you can look into starting an NA account. The only downside is that you can't move characters between accounts.

I'm currently on a trial account so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to try the american servers, right?
|
Also I hope they can help direct you to where you can purchase an american copy of the game if you decide that you like the NA servers. I know it can be tricky for EU customers to get american editions.
Once you do get on the American servers you should be aware that Freedom and Virtue have the highest populations, but with the release of Going Rogue they are currently the hardest to get onto.
Virtue is also the unofficial role playing server.
Pinnacle is known as the drunk server
Victory the unofficial Euro server
Justice the unofficial Aussie server
Freedom the unofficial PvP server
I can't remember the rest off the top of my head
When you are on a trial account I'd like to suggest that you open the search window and add a comment along the lines of
Trial Account please send invite can't respond to tells.
This is because of the trial account limitations that were put into effect to prevent spam abuse by goldfarming companies.
The message will also let the helpful players know they may want to show you the ropes and answer questions. There are a lot of us that look for trials just for that purpose.
Oh and just in case you weren't aware of all the trial restrictions here they are.
Restrictions
Trial Accounts cannot email other players
Trial Accounts may not level past 14
Trial Accounts can only have 50k influence
Trial Accounts may not join global channels
Trial Accounts can only speak in:
/local
/hc (the Help channel)
/team
Trial Accounts cannot invite players to team
Trial Accounts may join teams, but not invite other players
Trial Accounts may not join SuperGroups.
Trial Accounts may not create Mission Architect arcs. They can not interface with the Architect Entertainment Stations. However, they can be invited onto a team that is running MA missions.
I know these seem draconian and annoying but the RMT spam was really bad before they added the restrictions.
If you like what you see and decide to upgrade from a trial account I'd suggest getting the Going Rogue Complete Collection. It's the most recent version of City of Heroes and it'll unlock all the content.
I'm not entirely sure if it's just the expansion or the full game + expansion, but "complete collection" sounds like a complete collection.
