I didn't mean to imply that there were not valid concerns about finding teams. The devs have some opportunities there, to increase the ease of putting players together with the teams they are seeking. I think they are taking a decent first step with the changes to the search interface. Hopefully there will be some more improvements coming along soon.

I just took issue with this, all too common attitude:

the only server you will ever have a chance of getting a team on during those hours is Freedom.

I didnt say that the lower pop servers have nothing going on at all times, im sure they have busy times, but if your going to be playing late at night, the server thats going to require the least amount of effort and a much higher chance of getting a random group invite is Freedom because most people are in bed at night.
Maybe it's because I play on Protector, which is a West coast server, but I've never really noticed a lack of activity at that time. It's still a fair point though.

What? You don't think "the best way to find a team in-game is to visit the server forum" speaks to a flaw?

Thanks. According to a thread, it seems to be a driver issue and a common one at that. There is a ATI hotfix so that is good.

Thanks again for all your help!

(Sorry for the wall o' text)

Please bear with me if these questions have been answered elsewhere. I am still learning my way around the board. Everytime I try to play the trial I can't because the screen just blinks rapidly, so I am just going to assume I like the game and get it later today. But before I do I just have a few questions. I apologize if these questions seem like trolling for the MMO I just finished playing (EQ2). Sometimes it is just easier to compare it to what you are used to. Any help is greatly appreciated.

1. If I buy the Going Rogue Complete Set, I don't have to buy the other expansions right?

2. Is this a game you can solo all the way to the level cap?

3. I am going to assume that if that is true, there certain ones that are easier to solo with than others. Is that correct?

4. How is the balance? Are there certain (I have no idea what the term is for the different "combos") that are just pointless or nerfed to heck?

5. In EQ2, (sorry) in order to get reasonably good gear, you HAD to group/raid. Is that the case here? (I'm ok with that.)

6. Are there tradeskills?

7. Are there servers well populated? Any recommendations for a server if I tend to play between 9PM and 12AM PST?

Thanks again for all the help.
Hi not going to answer the questions because I'm sure one of the many posts above me will have done it.

Just wanted to say not a Wall of Text at all. Very easy to read.

Enjoy your day please.

There are currently only two 'raid' style encounters: Hamidon, and the Rikti Mothership.

Hamidon is a gigantic... cell... whose nucleus and mitochondria all shoot exploding laser beams. The zone where you fight him gets capped at 50 characters, but you can beat him with fewer. Defeating Hamidon awards you a special enhancement ("Hamidon Origin" enhancements). However, you can also purchase HOs on the market, or you can take a single team and run the Statesman Task Force or the Lord Recluse Strike Force, and get a Synthetic Hamidon Origin enhancement. SHOs give the same benefit as HOs. There's also a badge in the zone where you fight Hamidon, but you can grab the badge when Hami isn't there.

In the Rikti War Zone, you can get a group together to assault the Rikti Mothership. If you're skilled and coordinated, you can do it with just two teams, but it normally takes 3 or more. The Mothership raid rewards you with boatloads of Vanguard merits, which are used to purchase costume pieces and temporary powers at the Vanguard base in the RWZ.

Eq2 head here and still playing ...

Your questions all have been answered. The one that you asked about Solo I can understand from EQ2 viewpoint.

You are mostly concerned about being able to progress. And groups are hard to find at times in EQ2. So you end up soloing.

In this game ...grouping is very common thing. I have returned for 3 weeks now (rough guess) and I have not done squat solo. I have always found a team.

Don't simply flag for group. Watch that Broad cast channel. its much like Lvl 1-9 channel in eq2... except eq2 had more blah blah gibberish waste of brain cells to read junk to. For the most part its a great place to find a party. Just click the name in the chat box saying LFm the option to send message pops (fast way to respond before slots fill).

Otherwise you can solo your way..but that is dull man. You will find Teaming (groups) much more fun.

I also warn you to shake your old school way of grouping... The holy trinity grouping isn't a must...it is nice but not a must... (Tank,Healer,Dps)

Gear progression isn't the thing here... No heritage armors...and or Red slot raid loot...blue slot pvp loot...etc etc...

Its hard to describe...all i can say is dive in...be creative with your toon...enjoy the story arcs with quests...socialize... lots of action to be had.

one warning: this isn't like Antonia bayel RP...these folks are more hardcore RP if you join RP server...nothing wrong with that...but the atmosphere is different.

Freedom has very little to no RP but players are mostly interested in playing the game and crunching the numbers to maximize the characters it seems.

Virtue seems to lean more towards RP over gaming optimally (doesnt mean the both cant go together just leans to rp is all).

both servers good...for population. I prefer Freedom but don't be discouraged to go RP Virtue. Its a good place to.

Since you and I are EQ2 types PM me questions if you like...I can help you cross over into this world from EQ2 raid raid raid land... =p FYI: Abominable Labs can bite me!

And I know what an AT is, but what is an MM? I take it this is not a game where people focus a lot on Min/Max'ing their characters then?
http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Categoryefinition

Has a list of definitions of common terms.

Also, there are three URLs people find when looking for a CoH wiki.

www.paragonwiki.com

wiki.cohtitan.com

and the cityofheroes.wikia.com one

The first two are the same site. The third is a clone filled with malware and frequently has it's ads hacked to download virus, etc. Avoid Wikia.

I'll take it I don't have to worry about parsers being run! Woot! But I am a min/max guy at heart. (And I count achievements in that min/max category)

I have recently been playing an online involving hobbits in which, at high levels, LFMs request very specific classes and often, in addition to classes, stat/equipment requirements. It definitely made me miss pick-up groups in CoH in which intelligence and cooperation matter a lot more than AT/power choices.

Also, if you do want to min/max, just look in the archetype forums. Builds are serious business in there.

Indeed, it's very rare, at least on Guardian and Pinnacle, to find specific AT requests. Far more often it's bring whatever you like.

Occasionally for the harder, higher end content a team may be looking for damage, or support, or a tank. One thing about this game? "Damage" can mean virtually any AT and powerset combination; and "Support" DOESN'T mean "healer", in fact healer is a curse word around here... our buffs and debuffs are massively more effective than simple healing.

Also, as was touched upon earlier no particular AT is needed for any particular challenge. A team of 8 support characters (Defenders/Controllers) is not only viable, but can easily crush anything in it's wake thanks to stacking buffs and debuffs.

I'd consider Cathedral of Pain an endgame-esque raid too.

Schan you've gotten an AVALANCHE of excellent advice here - just wanted to add my 2 cents.

Re: Endgame

Someone here on the forums put it very well once, I thought - CoH isn't a game about being a superhero, it's a game about becoming a superhero. Take your time, read stuff, enjoy building your powers and skills, take "time out" to explore and visit new places, etc. etc. etc.

Re: Play hours

I play on Freedom AND I work a late shift, so I'm usually logging on around 1am ET (10p PT) and playing til 3a or 4a (12m-1a PT). I form Pick-up Groups (PuGs) practically every night, and can usually put a full, 8-player team together in under 5 minutes. So plenty of players online at that hour.

If you end up on Freedom be sure to look me up using my Global Name @Cougarific.

There are a couple of useful external programs you might be interested in:

Mid's Hero Designer will let you play around with different powerset combos, looking at hard numbers as you go.

HeroStats will help you keep track of every little bit of data the game is using "under the hood".

Good point, it does allow up to 24 characters. CoP slipped my mind since it had been dead and buried until now (and I never tested it in beta).

well, since most of your questions have been asked, I figured that i'd expand on this. coh is very casual, but there is definitly soem fun for min maxers. once you get situated, you will notice inventions, many of them will come in specific sets, and equipping several of them will have effects like a global increase in your defense against melee attacks, global recharge bonuses, and even occasional procc-ing extra damage, there are people who pour over these to get bleeding edge performance, so once you get comfortable, you will find that while min/max is not required to be effective, there are kindred spirits you can talk with to get to the bleeding edge of efficiency. best part is once you get to the sweet spot, you can alter difficulty so that you can increase the challenges to match your new capacities enjoy!

This is something to take to heart when coming here from another game. Two things that can boggle the mind of a transfering player:
1.) There are players with many years of playing under their belts and still without a character at the level cap.
2.) You can turn off experience gain and people do use it.

Don't miss the stories and don't miss stopping to see the game as you rise in the levels.

No to stupid parsers that don't count vampire orb and temp pets..(ahem necro cough cough)

As for the achievements addictions.. its Badge Addiction here. Same thing when it comes to our achievements. And a whole lot of them.

This is a grouping centered game with solo ability. And like I said earlier. You will find that you will be in more groups than not.
