We're used to seeing great replicas of Star Wars ships, but we've never laid our eyes on a life-size re-creation of a TIE Interceptor. Yet here it is, large and in charge on the floor at Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando.

See another angle in the video below.

Well if it were "real" it'd probably weigh several tons at least.
But since it's just a model (likely made with thin plywood and the like) it's probably like half a ton maybe.
Still pretty nice regardless...

Actually it's the opposite. It would probably weigh less if it were real. The real thing doesn't need much structural support because of gravity and force shields so it would likely weigh less than a car.

I'd say look to a modern jet fighter, lots of different materials there, though mostly composites. For example, the F22 has an empty weight of around 43,500 pounds (although it is much larger). In any event, I'm sure there are official specs for the ship some place.

And it was brought all the way from Belgium (along with a huge number of other props), courtesy of these wonderful fans:

This TIE fighter was pretty cool too:

Tie Interceptors, unless heavily modified, are not shielded. Nor do they have life support systems or hyperdrives. They are quite fragile, all things considered. Basically nothing more than the solar panels, the engine, avionics, and weapons. The Interceptor was, as its name suggests, built for speed and interception duties. Heavy armor would be a detriment to it.

Sad? That's something to be proud of!

Well I was just applying a little real world knowledge to my estimate. For example an F-16 Interceptor (a relatively smallish jet fighter) weighs anywhere around 20,000-25,000 pounds on take-off. Even you reasonably assume a real TIE-Interceptor would be less massive than a F-16 that'd still make it maybe as much as 5,000-10,000 pounds.

Sure it might be fun to assume that "semi-magical" Star Wars tech would make them even lighter but eventually at some point considerations for physics need to be considered regardless of what Lucas would want to dream up. The thing has to have -some- kind of internal structure tough enough to handle combat maneuvering even in Zero-G. They can't all be made of holograms and Sith-juice.

I was at the Celebration on Saturday, and I was told that at one point, they were allowing people to climb in and sit inside the ship until the Convention folks got a bit concerned about liability and stopped allowing it to happen (though it was apparently designed to ALLOW people to sit in it). It really was cool up close, and I ended up buying a Tie Interceptor from the original toy line because of it. It just looks wicked awesome.

And can I just say that those Legion folks that made all these props and costumes by hand have my undying envy and admiration?
