For shame Klaatu, necro-ing threads is verboten. Don't encourage the young ones to misbehave.

Where did this notion that "necro-ing" threads was a bad thing come from? It used to be people encouraged newbies to find existing threads and post in them, even if they were old.
My thought is that people noticed that responding to old questions which were time-specific was counter-productive, and saw a bunch of "you realize that post was from a year ago" responses, and inferred that responding to an old thread was inherently bad, but I'm not sure why it would be in general. If the topic stays topical (say, pet names for masterminds), it seems like responding in the existing thread is better than starting a new one.

I have plans to start a Demon MM come GR release. I've already decided the names for her pets:
Fiery Demonling: Odqan (Origin - a Mongolian Fire Spirit.)
Cold Demonling: Agloolik (Origin - An Inuit spirit of ice and fishing)
Hellfire Demonling: Surgat (Origin - minor demon; called the 'Opener of locks')
Ember Demon: Ababinili (Origin - Chicksaw Fire spirit and 'Giver of Life')
Hellfire Gargoyle: Gresil (Origin - the name given to one of the demons of the Loudun possessions)
Demon Prince: Negafook (Origin - Inuit god of Cold weather)
I probably put far too much effort into coming up with these names, but it will at least be different than all the ones sticking with the default names...
-This Space Intentionally Left Blank.-
I had a Merc MM and named the pets: Soldier, Demoman, Medic, Sniper, Spy and Heavy after TF2 classes.
My current MM (The one that I can remember the names from) is DS/Themal and their names are Steve, Jim, Rob, Dave, John and Frank. I was going to name them after what they did, but since they swap names every time I zone I went for random names...
Just an idle question, possibly off-topic:
Where did this notion that "necro-ing" threads was a bad thing come from? It used to be people encouraged newbies to find existing threads and post in them, even if they were old. |
Thread necromancy - Necro-posting is responding to an old discussion thread and is a form of thread bumping. If you wish to discuss a considerably older topic, create a new post and link to the older discussion. |
Okay, you're basically correct, AND the 'necro-d' thread in question was only about 4 months 'dead'. A reasonable argument could be made for either position.
Be Well!
Fireheart
I always name the ugly one Rosie O'Donnell
I give my Demon pets page numbers for names (referring to a book of demon summoning spells).
I guess my question isn't so much "why do people follow that rule on this particular forum", but "what caused a lot of forums to acquire such a rule". It seems contrary to all the other advice and etiquette guidelines I can find for forums. I think it's just sort of a convention on vB forums at this point.
My Mercs:
Soldiers: Zim, Breckinridge, Medic
Spec Ops: Carmen, Dizzy
Commando: Rico
My quest for Starship Troopers themed mercs also taught me you can't use the name 'Ace' for pets. Damn you devs!
On my thugs/dark:
Peter
Joe and Stewie
Qaugmire, Brian, and Cleveland
when i still had a Mercs mm this is what i called them.
Soldiers:
Soap (Less said 'bout this the better, he was in prison once...)
Fish (Cause he drinks like one)
Medic:
Doc (Mail order college degree in medicine)
Spec Ops:
SnakeBite (thought he was smart during survival training)
PitBull (Had a bad run in with a big dog)
Commando:
Gas Can (Cause he likes to blow stuff up, and nearly himself aswell)
My little demonlings will be named - Hear No, See No, and Speak No - I know! Not terribly original.
Haven't decided on the rest.
My Robots.
Tier 3: Boomstick
Tier 2: Klatu, Verata
Tier 1: Necktie, Nickle, Neckerchief

SHOVER-01, SHOVER-02, SHOVER-03.
PUSHER-01, PUSHER-02.
CLIPPY-01.
The lowbies were named by Beloved Spouse, we were running stuff together and SOMEONE felt that being randomly pushed while trying to use ranged attacks wasn't totally fun. I explained that pushing will protect you from the terrible secret of space, and the bots were named.
CLIPPY-01...
/macro Clip /petsay_name CLIPPY It looks like you're trying to subjugate your enemies! Would you like help?
