My son said he'd like to play with me. Can we use my discs to install it or do we ned to buy a new copy of CoX? Tia for your help!

same disc
You just need to open (i.e. pay for) another account and have different log-ins.

Edit - dont forget that you will also have to wait for all the wonderful patches to be updated since the time your disc was put out so Id suggest setting this up right before bedtime and let it update overnight.

Your discs will be fine. He can also install fresh using the updater. Either way is going to require a significant chunk of data to be downloaded and installed.

Where the game is installed from makes no difference.

I tend to do this when installing on a new computer:
Copy CoHUpdater.exe to the new computer's desktop
Run it
Close it after selecting the directory
Copy the Piggs folder into the new directory
Delete coh.checksum if it exists
Run the updater that is in the directory

This will skip a few hours worth of download time.

You will need to buy a new account. Since CoX is an MMO the disk is functionally irrelevant (except for making it faster to do a reinstall). So you can freely use it to install the client on his machine. However if he wants to log in at the same time as you he will need his own account. You can get an account for him either by buying a new copy of the boxed game or through the online store. One option you might also want to do is that you can create his account as a sub-accout of your NCSoft master account (default login/password is the same as your game account) to facilitate paying the subscription for both accounts at the same time.

As others have mentioned, there are no restrictions on the number of installs
you can have with the software.

The restriction is that each actively running copy (ie. logged in player) has
a unique NCsoft account that is being paid for when it is running.

So, I have only one account, but the game is installed on 3 PC's in my
home network. So friends can visit and we can all play at my place, each
using our own NCsoft accounts.

As for the install itself, don't use the CD.

I keep a copy of the most recent version of the game on a flashdrive and
whenever I need to put it on a new (or friend's) PC, I use that and refer
to Bill Z Bubba's most excellent guide on copying/installing the game.

It's a 5 minute process, max.

The download needed just to upgrade to the current version from the CD would
be MUCH longer to do...

Recommendation : If you start him his own account, (https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/Store.pl) I recommend either the Architect Edition w/ Magic pack (that one lets you choose either Tech/Cyborg or Magic), Good Vs. Evil, or Mac [Client is released, Celebration] Edition. In that order. GvE gives the Jumpjets/jump pack as well as the pocket D VIP card, and mac edition gives some nice costume bits and the mission porter - mac edition is just a name, by the way .

Bwah? The question was specifically targeted at NOT buying another copy of the game.

True but if they want to play together they will need two accounts which means they will need to buy a second copy, just not necessarily a second disc.

He has a point, applying a serial code is part of the process of opening a new account. It won't let you use the serial code from the copy already purchased as it has already been used.

For the short term you can start him on a trial account, once you have the game set up (by making sure it works with your account), this way you both can play for the entire 14 days and he can get use to the game. Then you can upgrade the trial to the full game if he still wants to play in two weeks.

Yes! I know LotRO, it doesn't matter if youhave a second disk, they seem to encourage you to just use a friends disk. Ok, so I need to pick him up a copy? Or how do I do this for just the 14 day trial thing for him? I'd like it to be a sub-account of mine so I still handle the personal/financial info. He's 11 and smart, but he's still 11, ya know? I'd like to be able to play with him as much as possible.

Within your account you should be able to recommend a friend, but I think that would mean that you can't add it as a sub account under yours, which is sounds like you want to do. I would suggest purchasing a new account under your master NCSoft account page.

Ok, I set him up an NCSoft account and started his download for him this morning so it will be a surprise for him when he wakes up. He is on a 14 day trial and when I log in to my NCSoft account I see his details there, so it looks like I can manage it. At the end of his 14 days if he still wants to play I will pick him up a copy of the game. Any places running any good deals on the package? Didn't I see there is an edition of GR that includes CoH and CoV also? Or did I just make that up?

You don't need to buy a physical copy of the game, all you actually need is to choose one of the copies on the website. Rajani Isa above made some good recommendations reguarding the options available.

However... (yes there is always one ) You are correct in seeing the GR + CoH + CoV set, it's called the complete edition, but isn't properly available yet. You can preorder it from... gamestop I think... but won't recieve it untill the 17th Aug or so when GR is released. This would be the best way to go if you can wait 2 weeks, although the other good option would be the Architect edition which also gives you one booster pack for free.

You can certainly use the refer-a-friend to add a new game account to your own Master account. I've done it a couple of times. You can also use the invite-a-friend-back system to reactivate one of your expired accounts (if it's been inactive for more than 90 days).

You can often find older versions (which don't matter, they all unlock the whole game) in the "bargain bins" of some retailers, which is a good buy if you can find one as they are usually priced at less than the $15.00 monthly subscription fee and come with a free month....

If you can find one of the older copies for less than or equal to the $15.00, then pick it up as it becomes a zero-sum effect.

If not though, I'd wait the couple of weeks we have left until the retail release of Going Rogue and pick up the Complete Edition retail box when it releases. You'll be wanting to get GR eventually anyway.

Also, if you're willing to wait a few days, you can frequently find a version of the game (CoV, CoH, GvE, Architect, or whatever) on Amazon or Ebay for under $10 including shipping. I got GvE for myself and my wife for $15 including shipping on both (package shipping deal). The box was in spanish, but that is actually kinda cool imho.

Thank you! Is there a "family plan" where it would be cheaper for him and I then paying $30 a month?

Unfortunately not. You can save a bit of cash by paying in larger increments (i.e. 6 months instead of 1) but there is no discount for multiple accounts.

This. With my finances, i tend to be able to afford the ~$42 dollar 3-month sub - saves me a few bucks, so it's worth it.

The one-year sub saves *A LOT* of money, but it is also a significant amount up-front (I think it's like $140), instead of spread out over the year. I pay around $11/mo because I pay yearly, instead of $15/mo paying monthly. That's basically getting three months of gameplay free.
