It seems odd that the fan would be blowing into the case.. Perhaps it was installed wrong? Most of those style fans blow into the power supply case and vent out the holes at the back. I've actually had a Thermaltake that was like that years ago.

I was going to suggest trying to return it for refund and pick up a PC Power & Cooling power supply, but I see they were bought by OCZ.

He means the fan installed upside down in the PSU, rather than the PSU installed improperly in the computer. If the fan is indeed blowing into the case from the PSU then that is the only thing that makes sense, unlikely as it seems.

have you used msi afterburner or evga precision to crank the fan to see if that helps the temps? I manually turn my fan to 65% for games on my 285 as that speed is still relatively quiet and drops temps by close to 20*C.

note that evga precision doesn't play nice with CoH, and needs to be closed before exiting the game, or the game will hang.

Have you updated your EVGA Precision? I've been using it for quite some time now and have had zero problems with it and CoH. I also do not use the overlay for temp readings if that means anything to you. Since I run windowed I can just look at the temps listed in my task bar.

You running windowed is the difference. If you run full (which I do) then it will cause issues with the game. Most recently with v1.9.5. I installed 1.9.6 last night so I haven't tried it, but considering the patch notes I doubt that anything changed. I have watched the in-game numbers enough now that I start it, load my game profile, then close it. Profile stays up, but no issues with CoH that way.

OK, I took the side panel off, and stuck my hand under the PSU. It seems that the fan in, in fact, sucking air up. I stuck my hand behind the case, and felt a light flow of air coming out.

So, it seems I was wrong, and the fan is working as it should.

It seems some people in this thread are having problems with the latest drivers (258.96), so I'm going to try to find and install a prior version (257.21).

I'll also download EVGA Precision. I run in windowed mode (HATE full screen. I always multi-task, so it's a royal PITA to tab out in full screen), so I should be able to leave it running.

Thanks for the info and ideas/suggestions, all!! I really hope I can get this card up and running. I REALLY loved what I saw of the game for those few moments before shutdown...

linking to the final conclusion since that's probably what matters.

Nvidia's finally answered the call for a card to match AMD's offerings with the GTX 460. According to HardOCP (and other reviews that I've glanced through) it basically does what the RadeonHD 3x00 series did for the RadeonHD 2x00 series: turn a dog into something you'd want to spend money on.

As an added bonus, the GTX 460 has an MSRP of $199, which puts it $30 less than the Average Selling Price RadeonHD 5830 it can match. It also overclocks better than the 5830...

I see just one slight issue... The ATi RadeonHD 5850 and 5870 were both supposed to launch at far lower price-points than they actually did... and it's been hinted AMD's board partners could sell the 5850 for $200 and still make a profit.

Hopefully then the Geforce GTX 460 will see what gamers have been asking for since... well... January actually: something that will force board prices down across the board. From what I've seen so far, Nvidia's finally gotten back into the game.
Aww now I'm going to have to put off buying the HD5850

The 258.96 have been working great on my 480, not one crash in game. (Not one crash in any game, come to think of it, except Fallout 3 - and I've modded the behoovies out of that game.) The 460 is brand new so I wouldn't try going back very far.

100C is *hot*. I wonder if the fan on the card is broken in some way?

Air and case constrictions make a huge fluctuation in card temps. Before my current 285 I had the gtx 260 216sp. In my case, it idles about 40*C and never went above 70-75*C in game. I put the card in my gf's case, and idle temps went up to 45*C and load temps from 80-85*C. I have a CM 690 with over a half dozen 120mm+ name brand fans, she has an "i-don't-know-but-it's-shiny" case (I had to let her pick her own or I wouldn't hear the end of it) with a single 120 front, 120 rear, and 80mm side panel fan.

I would say play the game with your side panel off with a small fan blowing into the case. If your temps drop without using Precision, then you have a case airflow problem.

EDIT: And just to add with the precision thing: Letting the stock fan profile do it's thing, games on the 285 would push card temps to 85-90*C. By setting it to 65% fan I get a small amount more fan noise (not noticeable with a game running) and temps stay in the 70*C range. Pushing the fan to 100% would only give me a 2-3% decrease in temps, for a huge increase in noise. Seems these fans are optimized for lower than full speed.

Since it seems we have some fairly tech-savvy people on this thread, please give me your opinions on what would be a good performance upgrade:

Specs:
Asus P5K Deluxe Wifi mobo
Q6600 @3.2GHz w/ Zalman Fan
80GB SSD (Intel)
2x 150GB Velociraptors in RAID0
2x 1TB WD Green HDs in RAID0
800W Thermaltake PS
EVGA GTX260 Superclocked
8GB GSkill High Performance Memory
Asus Xonar Soundcard

I'm definitely not at the top of the heap with any of my hardware running Win7 x64:

Processor: 7.3
Memory: 7.3
Graphics: 7.2
Gaming Graphics: 7.2
Primary HD: 7.6

I get the feeling that this new video card could raise my score by .3 or so, and that there would be some benefit in-game at least in terms of consistent framerates (I'm happy with how the game looks with my current settings, but I love when the game runs buttery smooth).

Thoughts?

And thanks, in advance!

Since I have such a good LGA775 processor, I am not thinking much out there would improve my processor speeds.

Found out on the nVidia forums that the problem is in the drivers. I can't roll back, because the 258.96 drivers are the first ones to add support for the GTX 460.

There's supposed to be a beta release of drivers on Wednesday that should fix the problem. If I can manage to find and install them, I'll see if it fixes the problem.

Here's hoping!!

Good luck Khel! It will be so great if the prob is as simple as a different driver..I will keep my fingers and toes crossed for you, even though it makes me walk funny.

Ok, so based on what people were saying about this video card, I went ahead and ordered an MSI one for $200 (I could have spent a bit more, but I have this thing about never spending more than 200 on a video card, and this one looks like a decent upgrade for the price). Could some people who are using the 460 let me know if I'm going to run into driver issues like our friend here?

Right now, yes. There is only one set of drivers available that support the GTX 460, and they have issues.

Tomorrow should see a release of a beta version of the next set of drivers that will fix the problem. If all goes well, they will be promoted from beta to official, and be made available on the download page.

Until the next set of drivers comes out, you should hold off on installing the card when it arrives. I'll try to remember to make a post in this thread when the official drivers are out.

Good to know! Thanks for the info. I SHOULD be getting the card tomorrow. Here's hoping the beta drivers arrive before my card shows up! (crossing fingers!)

I mentioned this in another thread, but it bears repeating: There ARE new drivers on Guru3D that will work for Win7 (359.32). I'm using them now and, while not perfect, are perfectly play-worthy in CoX. They aren't official (they won't be found on NVidia's site), so use at your own risk, but I haven't crashed so far, and I have upped my settings significantly. Praetoria never looked better!

OK, my new card showed up before I had to leave for work this morning. Installed it, removed my drivers, and installed the 258.96 drivers. Downloaded and installed EVGA Precision, and set it to show the GPU temp in the System Tray. Loaded up CoH, and couldn't log in. Servers were down for maint. Sadly, they didn't come back up before I had to leave.

One thing I was able to observe was that while I was idling at the Log In Screen, the temp of the card wasn't steadily climbing towards 100° C. That was a good sign.

After getting home from work, I loaded up CoH, and logged in my level 50 /Regen Scrapper, who is in Port Oaks. Cranked up my settings to Ultra Mode, and maxed everything out. Ended up with an average FPS of about 12-15 FPS. Dropped a few things down, and averaged about 30-35 FPS, with my aura, cape, Integration, Super Jump, Sprint, and Super Speed toggled on. Not bad.

Logged out, and loaded up my level 14 Praetorian Scrapper, who is in Imperial City. Got an average FPS of 25-30 while running around, and an average 50-55 FPS while in a mission on the new Lab map, which is a map that always floored my FPS to around 5-7 FPS.

The entire time, I never saw my temp reported as being higher than 68° C.

So yes, I'd say I had a faulty card.

I'm sure I'll need to tweak it to get optimal settings, but overall, I'm glad I bought this card. If you can afford it, I say go ahead and buy this card. It's pretty awesome. And EVGA support kicks much ***.
