Because the Mutant booster just went live, professor.
That doesn't explain why they didn't do it at their normal time.

Is this a good time/place to mention they are giving away codes later today for North American and might soon be doing it for EU?

These things download so fast that I bet the OP hasn't replied to his own thread because he finished downloading and verifying just when he finished throwing his fit , and is now merrily LOLing in Atlas Park.

They had to do it today so they could give away the early codes today and have them work when people apply them.

Then why do they bother saying that they have a two-hour window slated for maintenance? Not to mention, that window is supposed to be weekly, not daily. On Thursday, not Wednesday.
As was said, I can understand why they would do it /today/, but why now? And, Crimson Vanquisher, apparently it is /not/ up...still.
And yes, we should all just shut up and be good lemmings.
In no particular order:
- They can take the servers down at anytime they need for as long as they need them down.
- They schedule the downtime for how long they think it will take but it can go over for unforeseen reasons
- This is not the normal weekly maintenance. That is why they warned us about the maintenance ahead of time.
