Game won't go past Loading screen
which loading screen is it getting stuck on? the small loading bar or the one with the characters in the background?
I'm asking because whenever I restart my computer it takes roughly 5min to load past the "character loading" screen. Now since my computer is pretty powerful, that 5 min could be more for you. I haven't figured out why it's doing it, but after a while i get to the username /password screen. |
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Ok Zero. Load in safe mode. Once in game open your graphics settings and make the following changes.
Water effects Low
Shadows Stencil
Ambient Occlusion off
And make sure that your resolution is set to match your desktop resolution exactly,
Then try again and report back.
We'll whip this thing yet.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Just to join in the fun - I'm having the identical problem.
The game won't load out side of safe mode and all I get is the small "loading" message.
This is a fresh install of the game this morning.

jade, i have a feeling your sound drivers are borked. try updating those if you can and see if that helps. try a disc clean up and defrag also.
it doesn't let me change the ultra mode settings while in Safe Mode.
Oh, and i can't figure out where to find driver updates for my sound card. It seems to be a bad search-fu on my part.
Just to derail things a bit. If you are taking 5 minutes to load past the character loading screen then either your system isn't powerful at all or else you also have problems somewhere along the way. I usually take 30 seconds or so.

EVGA Geforce 275
8gb ram.
As I said, powerful enough...
The problem only happens after a reboot, if I get in the game and exit the following load times do take about 30sec. I am also getting the "driver stop responding" error, which I believe might be related to my issue.
Sorry for the derail.
Zero, whats your sound card manufacturer? although I would find it weird if your sounds driver was preventing you from connecting to the game...
not sure... SigmaTel Audio perhaps? brand doesnt look familiar to me.
I've updated the drivers for my audio, it's still showing a 2009 driver - can't find anything more recent then that.
Still no joy getting the game to run.

u should do a petition, just like i did.. It's been a week now, but they are trying. Probably would be faster if I was at home for more than 2 hrs during their work day.
I will post if they suggest something that works, so u can try it also..
Its not looking good that you're the 3rd so far that has this problem occuring.
Maybe we should brainstorm this.
Anything unique happen to you prior to not being able to play?
install a new game? Crash? Anti-Virus update? How long has this been going on for you?
I've got a ticket outstanding with them - raised it yesterday then hit the boards because the support on here can be quicker (esp over the weekends).
Good idea about the brainstorming.
I had files on my PC from a relese or two ago (was playing USA side). A couple of friends asked my to head on back to Defiant so I reactivated my memebership, patched the files and that's when then problems started.
This morning I did a complete install from disk, and patched from there - again no joy.
I've just swapped Anti-Virus to Kaspersky, and had some problems getting CoH through the firewall - but I can play in safe mode now so guess that's fixed.
I'll take a look at your reports see if there is anything we've got in common - might be a good place to start.
One thing I think I should mention - when I run the CohHelper I get an error saying;
"Error reading registry"
Unable to read your City if Heroes registry information
Then a load of stuff and Vista and running the program as an Admin.
I've pretty much eliminated Anti-virus as the culprit, as I have uninstalled it, and it still didnt work with 0 antivirus, and I just reinstalled it, and still not connecting, so it shouldn't be that.
I've always been on American Servers.
You on a laptop or desktop?
and yeah, usually its faster here, but obviously everyone is baffled by what's going on.
I'm able to play on my desktop, but my desktop is out of date, and slower than my laptop. That and I do love to sit in the living room and be able to game.
I'm on the same desk top I was when playing on the American Servers, so thinking it was something in the last release.
I'm running an install on my laptop now to see what results that has.
it's possible, but it is odd that my desktop can play it, but my laptop does not, and it shouldnt be affecting Test and Live server's connection.
but then again, who knows.
Have you ever had to run a ScanDisk check or had a lockup where you had to hard restart?
Last night, after I patched the old files, I got the blue screen of death.
Nothing since then.
I've ruled out the audio stuff because I've removed everything and still no joy.
hmm. then i'm completely stumped, cuz neither of our situations are very similar, and yet, we're having the same exact issues. Hope other tech guru's chime in, or we get lucky monday when the tech support guys come back to work and figure it out.. :/
Ok Zero. If your desktop can play it in standard mode then try and use that system to change the settings like I suggested. Make sure the resolution matches the current resolution of your laptop. And since sound might be a problem you should probably turn off sound effects and music too.
If we can get you into game with the laptop at all then you can start altering settings till you crash out and then we'll at least have a bit more of a clue what is going on.
If multiple people are having this problem then we should be able to track it down just like all the other problems the forum has managed to solve in the past.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
no dice.
Anyone know about the registry and where I can find/amend it?
UPDATE - ignore me - deadend....
I'll keep thinking and maybe something will come to me but right now I'm stumped. Hopefully the next patch will solve this whatever it is.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
seeing as I can't get into test either, i'm highly doubting that one.
I keep looking at this and looking at this and feel like I'm beating my head against a wall.
Everything I can think of has been done (sometimes more than once) and it still doesn't make sense that this is happening much less why it's happening.
I'm going to keep looking at it and hopefully a light bulb will go off or I'll get a wild hunch and ask you to try something that sounds ridiculous on the off-chance it might help.
This one will haunt me. I hate when things don't make sense.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Jade, I'm not sure why but we aren't getting the complete CoH Helper log when you paste it here.
Are you right-clicking the file and selecting Run as Administrator from the menu that opens? If not, please do so and paste the results here. If you are doing it that way, something else is interfering with it gathering all of the data.
