Ok guys real stupid question.
What speed do you need to play City of Villains or Heroes ?
Lower than 3Mb/s is crazy right ? But between 15Mb/s and 20Mb/s is ok right ?

You can play the City of Heroe's game on a 56k modem. Truthfully, you can play most MMO's on a 56k modem, but you really need a 128k connection or better.

Second, if you check out http://www.dslreports.com/ you'll find that the average broadband download speed is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.8Mbps: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/A...-38Mbps-107992

What you will have trouble researching is the average upload speed, which affects your game just as much as the download speed. Most residential cable and DSL setups are asynchronous, meaning you have a much lower upload speed compared to your download speed. Most Cable providers limit the upload speed on 3meg/4meg accounts to around 512kbps, which is one of the reasons MMO developers really can't press required usage speeds that far.

In my own case, my Internet Service provider's current plan is a 12Mbps download. I can sustain about a 10Mbps download speed, but my average upload is only 1.8Mbps.

Thanks Je Saist (what's in a name )

So if my download is at 20Mbps but my upload is at 2Mbps I can forget it right ?

... um.

Again. You could play CoH game on a 56k modem. 2Mbs speed is way faster than that. 2Mbps is about 2048Kbps, which is roughly 36 times faster than the minimum required speed.

Heck, you can play CoH/V on a 28.8k dial-up connection. I did so for years. (Not that I'd particularly recommend doing so if you can avoid it.)

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

I regularly use my iPhones 3g connection to play, It's actually more reliable and less likely to lag out than my friends AT&T Uverse connection. OP You'll be more than fine on your connection.

Now, if you're trying to use satellite where your connection gives you a big fat finger whenever the sky even thinks about raining... that's another story.

I did so as well, and on crappy phone lines so I actually got slower connection than that, sometimes as low as 15k! Of course, when it was that low, I couldn't do much more than solo...eight-man teams were impossible, and don't even THINK about going to Atlas Park or participating in a Rikti Raid! LOL

I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone on dial-up these days. There are just too many things that will push past the download cap for dial-up, even when solo. If you want to be able to do everything in this game, a connection that will reliably give you over about 200 kilobits per second down and 8 kilobits per second up will probably be fine, though upload can go higher when you fiddle with window colors and other UI elements.

There are several things you can disable to reduce the traffic and make the game playable over 56K. The most important is to enable "Hide Buff Numbers" in 3 places near the bottom of the settings. If that's not enough, removing channels such as Damage Received and To Hit Rolls from your chat tabs will reduce the traffic a little bit more. Hiding buffs completely from the settings will reclaim a little more bandwidth.

Heh, sounds just like me at first. And heaven help me if there was a fire kin on the team. Either Speed Boost or Fire imps messed me up, but both together? BEGIN THE TIME LAG DANCE!

Dec out.

I can play this game with few problems and my connection is nothing short of disgraceful. I'm paying for a 4Mb connection. The lines themselves can only handle 3Mb and I live right on the edge of my exchange radius. My average download speed is 128kbps, whereas my upload is 350kbps

Yeah, my old dial-up started having trouble as the game got more complicated. I couldn't do anything in RWZ for the longest time, because the fights at the firebases had enough stuff going on to saturate my connection. Gang War was similarly problematic, so I ended up shelving my Thugs/ MM for years. And Scrapyard's giant horde. And Rikti raids. And... well, you get the idea.

Stepping out into the prison yard in Breakout can produce enough to flood a 128K download connection solo. Dark Astoria, some places in Striga, and a good chunk of Warburg will definitely push a dial-up user off.

When I finally got broadband, I was astounded by the number I got in the received line in my netgraph in the Breakout prison yard. It wasn't always like that. Somebody decided that relative positions really mattered a lot in early 2007, possibly to make sure that the proper people got credit for defeats for drops, and increased the frequency of positional data being sent. At least that's my pet theory that seems to account for the circumstances where data traffic goes through the roof.
