Well, it is a six year old game and one that was made with an attempt to not over-tax systems that were 'average' at that time. Considering the large number of civilians that crowd some areas, it's good that they're a bit spotty on the detail. Especially when Independence Port's civvie spawning is buggy and they're just swarming the sidewalks in ridiculously dense packs.

Anyway, MMOs tend to be a bit behind the curve on graphis compared to single player ( or non-massive multiplayer games ) because of the large number of player graphics that have to be rendered in one area, which tend to be more demanding than NPC and environment graphics. So, those two get skimped on a bit to save processing requirements.

Oh, and you being "red side" (playing a villain) will have a definite impact on population. Most people tend to play heroes ("blue side") so you're much more likely to see people running past in Atlas Park than on Mercy Island. Playing on a higher population server will of course help boost that.

Indeed, but the fact is:

i was buying some stuff for my office (in the Office Depot), when i see the
game in the junk box (the things with discount).
the price. 5 bucks with:
-Cd Game
-Helix Figure (the fish guy)
-Two Posters
-A bunch of free tickets to play Trials
-A Collector Card
-And a very nice book
-oh, and the instructions

Oh, they've merged the two games ages ago. You can play both CoH or CoV now with the same account for one low price. Many times you see it referred to as "CoX" for that reason.

You might want to play a villain for personal preference reasons (CoV was made later so it has some general game play 'quality of life' facets you don't see in the CoH entry levels) but you're not restricted to one side.

I have heard of a few people finding the game in $10 or $5 bins. It's not that uncommon for a store to clear out a warehouse or a back room and find a bunch of stuff that is outdated, such as a CoV box, and dump it at a loss so they don't have to waste space in storage for it anymore.

You can actually find the game at a few online retailers for less than $15 if you dig long enough. Some people just don't understand the value of what they have.

Hmm, i always wanted to play the game as a Hero.
someone said here: they merge the two games....

so.... i could use Blue Team with my CoV serial?

that will be ****** awesome

Yep,

When you create a character you should have toe option to create either a hero or villain.

Badging in a PvP zone?

If you are treasure hunting on a battlefield wearing an enemy uniform, there is a high probability that you will be attacked.

This is an enjoy-the-ride game. "50" is only a number, not the goal of the game. - Noxilicious

Keep in mind that you can't play your villain on the blue side or vice versa. A few zones later in the game are "co-op" zones where villains and heroes can join up against a greater danger but that's not for a while yet. You can make a hero right now though to play on the blue side.

In July, the expansion "Going Rogue" is expected to be released which will allow you to actually change your villain into a hero (or vice versa again) without changing their archetype or powers. That will be a paid expansion though and not part of the core game.

Welcome to the game! Tankers are definitely the most durable AT (once they mature that is, nobody's really tough in the very early levels) and they're capable of decent damage output but they won't rival the kill speed of a scrapper or blaster. They're intended to take a beating for the team as their primary purpose and dish out damage as their secondary purpose. They're also probably my favorite AT to play, although I've played every hero AT to 50 at least once and enjoy them all.

If you haven't already I'd suggest you take a look at the Tanker forum a few down from here for guides and suggestions on what works well and what works really well. One of the good things about this game is that it's really hard to come up with a primary/secondary combination that isn't at least playable... of course as with all games some combinations are better than others.

<edit>
If you want to play a hero dominator type character a Controller is a close analogue to the Dominator; you get many of the same primary powerset choices and a buff/debuff secondary instead of an attack secondary. A team of high level controllers can make any challenge in the game trivial... they really can get stupid powerful in the higher levels, especially when you put several together on a team

Heh, you got a nice deal there. Collector's bundle City of Villains by what you described. Considering it comes with a free month, you come out ahead. Heck, if you decide to stick around and they have more at that rate, I'd recommend grabbing them up. You can apply the codes for the free months.

Good point, at that price you're saving a fair amount of money over the $14.99 monthly subscription.

CoV Collector's game with more than one Clix. I think it came with all seven of them. Also, it came with a fancy Arachnos cape and a fancy Arachnos chest symbol.

So it sounds like he got the normal CoV. Still a decent deal at five bucks, but not nearly as awesome as getting the CE for five bucks.

ADDITIONALLY: You cannot apply more than one code from any single retail type to your account. One CoH, one CoH CE, one CoV, one CoV CE, one GvE, one Mac, one AE. Additionally, if you apply the CoV CE before the CoV or GvE code, you cannot apply a CoV or GvE code.

So no, I do not recommend the OP buying a bunch of the boxes up unless s/he wants to create a bunch of different accounts.

late to the thread, but glad it got resolved. some things murder your performance, fiddlin' about sometimes helps, glad it did for you. if you have gameplay related stuff, toss it up here, we will be glad to help. just take a sec to calm down first, angry or threat posts can get you more noise than information. see ya ingame maybe.

Hmmm, no. it's not the "normal version".
There was another CoV and the Architect Edition in the Junk.
but the other CoV was just a simple DVD case (like the ones of 360 or Ps2).
The Architect Edition was 2.99, but the bundle was in really bad shape.
And the box said: Create costumes.
So, no thank you.

Oh, i also get a Halo 2 with 1 month for Live. the box was in bad shape.
But 10dls it a deal
You can use the Games for Windows Codes in almost any game.
obviously just for "Games for Windows Live"

If it wasn't two game boxes wide , it was the normal version. The CE box was two game boxes wide. If it didn't come with seven Clix, it was the normal version. The CE box came with seven Clix. If you don't have access to the Arachnos cape/chest symbol, it was the normal version. The CE code grants the Arachnos cape/chest symbol.

Did it look like THIS (CoV regular) or THIS (CoV CE)?

edit: If the Architect Edition was 2.99 and unopened, you should have gotten it. It's more than just costumes, it also includes a free month and a freebie "Super Booster" - link to contents.

At three bucks the DVD alone is worth it for the moment. Of course now that you have it already patched up to date you could just copy the game directory to a flash drive as a backup and for quick install if you want to play on another system. Also, an even more up to date DVD will be available this summer when Going Rogue is released.

My current system is a fairly old Core2 Duo with a 9500 GT and it runs fine with reflections and shadows set to high with ambient occlusion disabled. Also i've been playing mostly redside lately, which has always been a bit of a drag on my framerate, so i'm not really displeased with Ultra Mode.

Someone earlier in the thread babbled about how their WoW raid rig or some such was still a bit slow. WoW does have much lower system demands and graphical details than other current MMOs. City of Heroes came out before WoW, and even before the creation Ultra Mode CoX still had much higher quality graphics. The recent WoW trial i tried out really brought that home for me. WoW is not much of benchmark for stress testing newer (or even somewhat older) systems.

I'm getting 15 FPS outside and 30 FPS on the inside. To be honest it's a bit TOO shiny for me. I really have a hard time seeing whats going on with all the flashies and stuff. So although I was dissapoint...I went back to "recommended" settings. I still think it's a very pretty game for 5+ years old.
Sometimes "Max" setting is not the "Best" setting for game play folks.

Just my thought...

Kings Row is for 5-10. Just watch your aggro and you'll be fine. Ron will have an icon showing where he is. If it's not there, go to your contacts list and click on him and he'll show.
