I17 Bugs: Input Delay and other oddities
Haven't used team speak since our groups server went down some time last year, but we have been using Xfire with no problems so far.

The problem most often appears in systems that are competing for keyboard listenining- the hotkey poller for ATI, the hotkey for voice chat, etc. Not all keyboard listeners seem to be affected equally, though...

Update - Skype's dropping every other minute on calls as well.
So that's Skype and Ventrilo bugged with I17. Anyone got Teamspeak status? |
It's on a older PC, ATI card, single core AMD CPU, Win XP, disabled the appropriate service etc. etc.
We use TS, and after I17 we thought the TS server was playing up, serious breakup/stuttering, but only when the game's running fullscreen. I *think* that if he alt-tabs out to the teamspeak window, TS works fine, but as soon as he Alt-Tab's to CoH, TS is effectively useless, as he can't hear anything I say and vice versa. Oh, and this is with none of the ultra mode shinies turned on, the slider set to 'Minimum'. Oh, and he uses a mouse button as the TS 'Push to talk' button, not the keyboard.
It looks like the game's grabbing it's fair share and more of CPU time, leaving nothing else for TS (and maybe not enough for the OS to process keyboard calls in a timely manner?). I wonder if the priority of the client's been maxed out or taken a notch higher than it used to be?
I've noticed no issues on my machine, but as I had to get a new PC late last year and I'm running an Nvidia card, that's not really news.

I think this *might* be related... I'm not real sure, but I /always/ stream music when I play, typically from Pandora, but also often enough from Youtube playlists. As of i17, things are.... weird. Spikes and lags and weird pauses and jitters. The game itself has been pretty laggy, 500-1500 ping very regularly, from what was rarely over 150 before, maybe the game's spikes are affecting BW usage elsewhere as well?
EDIT: and come to think of it, it might be more than just internet bandwidth, because even if I preload the song on youtube, play it through, and then load the game, I can still run into audio jitters and pauses if I replay it, though, a lot fewer of them.

Oddly, this issue only seems to come up on my weaker computer (Which I generally run at the Recommended graphics level), while my other one (Which can run Ultra Mode without a problem) does not experience any stuttering at all.
I'm also experiencing the same random disconnects from Skype along with the stuttering issues in the same program that were mentioned earlier in the thread.

I'll file this under other oddity since some of you are mentioning lag. I play a particular AE mission quite a bit in a team of 5, with difficulty set to team of 8. Since i17 came out, I've experienced pretty bad lag in that mission (it's the steel canyon outdoor map). I get lag elsewhere as well but it's really noticeable in that AE mission. My rig is brand new (5870, win 7 64bit, 6G ram) so I don't think it's my rig.
I tried all sorts of things to get rid of the lag (10.4,10.1, ultra mode on/off, etc.) and determined the lag went away if I turned ultra mode off. But in tweaking all the settings, I also determined the lag went away with ultra mode on if I left the Options menu for tweaking the graphics settings open while playing. My settings are all ultra mode settings with depth of field and ambient occlusion disabled, fsaa x4 using 10.1 drivers (10.4 drivers cause more random crashes, especially when changing vertical sync...10.4 always crashes if I change vertical sync). I updated my sound drivers to the latest as well, because I get random crashes which I assume are related to sound.
Seems odd to me anyway.

I tried to follow the following instructions supplied by athalusis (thanks for these!) but I can't complete it because I get a message saying "Unable to change priority. The operation could not be completed. Access is denied." I use Vista, and I know the issue is one of administrative privileges, but I can't figure out how to address it. I am the sole user of this machine, and I am the administrator of this machine. I just want vent to work again.
Anyone have suggestions? (I suspect I'm going beyond the scope of this topic by even asking this, but I'm feeling really stuck.)
I finally found a solution that worked for me regarding ventrillo ping spikes and crashes. I was reading a post on another game in which a user was having the same problem. Some one gave the solution that worked for him.
Solution 1. Have Ventrillo Open 2. Open Task Manager 3. Righ Click on Ventrillo in the "Applications Tab" and click on "Go to process" 4. It should take you to the "Process Tab" with Ventrillo.exe highlighted 5. Right click on ventrillo.exe and set priority to high You should be able to open coh now and run vent smoothly. This worked for me perfectly. I am not sure if this will work for skype or team speak but you can give it a try and hope for the best. (Sorry for the detailed description, making sure everyone is able to follow the steps.) |
If somebody you're arguing with goes off the deep end, don't follow.

That's all I have.
Ah, I was beginning to suspect it's me but it isn't. I too have been having insane delay's when alting to other windows or menus, so I suspect this may be a linked issue.
Summary Time Input Delay/Lag For ATI cards: Run services.msc, disable the ATI Hotkey Poller. For others: Get as much data as you can, logs, scans, the works and send them in to support - sorry guys. Ventrilo/Teamspeak/Skype issues Change the priority of the program to AboveAverage or High. Note that with this you will have to do it each and EVERY time you load the program up for it work. Particularly annoying with Ventrilo. |
for me, hitting CTRL+ESC pulls up the windows menu / taskbar much faster now.
Also less trouble alt-tabbing.
I'm not sure what patch did it, or if it was something I changed on my system.
Anyone else see this clear up at all?
TeamSpeak is still funky.
I have to run the TS Server at AboveAverage Priority.
One of my friends needed to run the CLIENT at high priority
(TS2 client has an option for this in-program)
Note: I am not running any hotkey pollers of any type.
SIGH... Has anyone sent in a support request?
If I get an answer for my problem I'll be sure to post it here.

Check out the test server. The current update there has the game running at a lower (Normal, lowered from Above Normal) priority that may fix your issues.
|
If the game was running at AboveNormal, that would answer a LOT of qestions, but mine (live) is running at a LOWERED priority.
You said it was lowered on Test to 'normal'. Is your live game really running at AboveNormal priority?

Actually, I just checked, and my LIVE game is running at BelowNormal priority!

The latest test update runs at Normal (8) priority when the game has focus and Below Normal (6) when it doesn't.
That's only part of the problem, though.
City of Heroes throttles my bandwidth pretty dramatically. Last night my reported bandwidth went, consistently, from 270 mbps down to 13.5, and then after a while at 13.5, the game would crash.
Repeat. Repeat, repeat. I couldn't stay in game for more than twenty minutes or so.
This was on Virtue, which has crashed three times in forty-eight hours now, so that might have something to do with it, but still.
I've experienced, and other people have reported as well, out of order packets and severe chat lag, to the point it's clear something has gone wrong with the way City of Heroes handles the TCP/IP stack.
For me, this issue has only cropped up after the latest patch to Live, the one that fixed the Respec crashing. However, other people have reported having this problem since beta of I 17 in MARCH.
I was having similar connection issues. Priority change on test server made them go away. YMMV.

The current version on Live is 1800.201003300904.20T5r (this has several fixes, but not the Respec crash) and the patch notes are here.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
