Weird latency issues - I cant figure out why...Please help, game is unplayable

I have a strange issue with CoH...I just installed it on a laptop that I recently got (a Lenovo w500). For some reason, I am getting a LOT of rubberbanding, pretty much to the point of it being unplayable.

I don't think its my network, as when I play it on another computer it is fine. I dont think its a real performance issue with the machine, but some odd networking issue, because when I installed a virtual machine and play the game through the vm (tethered on my cellphone), I don't have any issues. If I use the host network on the VM, I get the latency hiccups.

I have ports mapped to this machine (as per NC soft support: All of these ports: TCP 2104, TCP 2106, UDP 7000-7100 and TCP 23094 ) , but that doesnt seem to help.

I am playing the game on Win XP on the VM, and Win7 on the problem and my other laptop. The only time I have latency issues is when using the problem computers network.

Ive never really had network issues with this computer before (that I have noticed), but I haven't really done any gaming (but downloading is not affected). Does anyone have any idea what I should be looking for to find the problem?

Thanks!

You may have already tried this, and it's only rarely helped me when end up rubberbanding, but have you tried /sync?

Might want to type /netgraph 1

And have that netgraph on for about an hour or so to see if it's ACTUALLY a network issue, or possibly something local to your computer (i.e. memory leak/slow cpu/lower end graphics card).

Use that to check and see if you actually have real NETWORK hiccups. If you don't and it appears to be smooth sailing, I'd look elsewhere.

Just asking since it's unclear, are you on a wireless network when you get these problems? Rubber-banding is nearly always network latency IME and wireless can be *really* bad sometimes.

Mmm...

Have you checked your laptop's update settings? There is nothing like windows self updating, or the infamous virus checker updater, or any other programs which may want to update anytime they randomly feel like; to wipe your bandwidth and take you to rubber-band-ville.

Sorry - I looked for the tech support forum, and totally missed it.

Anyway - Thanks for the replies.

- I will need to try netgraph. I will be away this weekend, but should be able to try it out next week if not tonight. Memory (4 gig)/ CPU (dual core 2.8Ghz 64bit)/Graphics card (ATI Mobility FireGL V5700) should not be an issue at all.
- The laptop isn't updating or doing anything else major in the background.
- Yes, I'm on a wireless network, but bandwidth isnt a problem. I've only ever played over wireless (this machine and others), and I can get speeds of several meg a second on this laptop. If I don't have bandwidth issues through my PHONE on this laptop, I can't imagine actual throughput being an issue.

Thanks again, and I'll give updates if not tonight then next week.

I was able to jump on for a few minutes tonight with /netgraph on...

i still had the rubberbanding, so nothing was different (IE, no miraculous fix from something that happened this past week). The netgraph showed mostly low-lying green with occasional yellow spikes.

In the 8 minutes that I had to play tonight, I had 75 duplicated in packets, 20 retransmited, and 0 lost.

My average ping was 160, send was around 700, and receive was 3700.

Still stumped why this is having a problem Does this shed any light on anything?

Thanks for the help...

I could be wrong, but from my experience, the netgraph only shows network problems when you have dips into the red constantly. I've only ever seen either green or red, never yellow. So I'm not sure what that means. But when I had a lot of red instances, I was having network issues.

Have you tried turning off any firewalls/virus scanners to see if that fixes the problem?

As I recall, yellow indicates duplicate packets.

I would second trying to turn off a firewall or virus program. A few years ago after a game update, Norton went bonkers on my system and really screwed with the game. And as with the recent troubles with McAfee, sometimes an update can really screw with a computer even though other programs were running fine before.

it's not the network it's your computer. part of the problem is that you don't have a gaming graphics card it is a rendering graphics card. awesome if you are using Blender or 3Ds Max but bad for City of. Also you most likely have overheating issues depending on where your NIC/wireless is it could be melting.
