Targeting through a player rude?

Playing my Kin I got chewed out by a scrapper for targeting through him. I said "My heal needs people in melee range of a mob. You're within melee range of a mob." to which I got a "It's rude, stop leeching."

So... uh... since I usually play melee and love when the ranged target through me (especially when I play one of my tankers), did I miss a memo about keeping someone targetted to target through them being rude?

Unless you actually weren't on this person's team, I think he doesn't understand how the game works.

How does he know you are targeting through him? And no, that weird. If you're all on the same team then there is no Leeching, he loses nothing by having his targets die faster or heal him quicker. It's just stupidity.

It's no ruder than a scrapper accidentally defeating your Transfusion target before the heal fires >.>

and it's far less rude if it's an emergency Transference..!

Targetting through a Scrapper or Blaster on my team is how my Dark/Sonic defender worked. Nothing rude about it, common sense.

I'd just have obeyed him and not clicked on him again (so no Speed Boost) and made sure I wasn't "rudely" buffing him by ensuring he was out of range for the various Siphons and Heals.

Uhhh.... no.

That person was just stupid.

He knew because occassionally he'd target me and see the little bars over his head (I'd see bars appear above mine). Also he'd periodically not engage an enemy right after defeating one and notice that it took me a second or two to resume blasting and buffing. That was part of his leeching accusation.

Yes, we were on the same team. It *would* be pretty rude (to put it mildly) to follow a scrapper around who was street sweeping and throw a gloom at every mob they went to engage.

Wasn't really an issue, I apologized, hung further back so I'd stop crowding him (no more siphon power bonus for him, but plenty of breathing room), and just targetted through the controller instead. Just wanted to make sure that some sort of CoH social taboo wasn't being stomped all over.

I'm not familiar with Gloom, but if it does no damage... how can they complain? You're not taking ANYTHING from them.

That's why I don't get the "drive by buffing" hatred. They are HELPING you and doing nothing to harm you...

Gloom is an attack.

I once stopped to Ice Arrow a rather nasty Lieut who was ambushing someone who was struggling in Talos (and got thanked nicely for it) and I'll often Fortitude someone as I float by.*

But I've never heard of someone on the same team being miffed about. He's either a weirdo or doesn't understand how teaming works here (or of course both).

You got a real piece of work there that day.

Heck, I targeted through a tank with an energy^2 blaster last night and he didn't get irritated.

And, routinely on a difficult mish, I or someone will say "All ranged target through the tank/scrap. Keep it tight."

If you were knocking away [not the case] you could let them know the bind for target near. Or, if I was knocking away, if they complained, I'd stop. But last night, I killed what I knocked away. Heck, Energy^2 has such a light show it looks like you're death incarnate. Who's to complain?

A Kin targeting through a melee is a kind gesture.

I notice the OP mentioned Gloom too. So I assume you are a Kin/Dark? In that case there's even more reason to be spamming attacks through someone (like with my Dark/Sonic Blast) you're actually helping them out by blast-debuffing the foe, making the scrapper even harder to hit.

I almost always target through another player when on my kin especially since i am usually buffing hitting other powers while on that target next player buff button mash more (while targeting through player 2 etc.) rinse and repeat through the buff cycle

It's only ever rude, on the same team, if you target through a melee character with knockback attacks and haven't cleared first with them. With any other attacks or AoE buffs? Of course it's not rude. Well, maybe when it comes to Brutes and you start Holding the stuff he's got attacking him, but that's a general thing and not specific to targetting through.

Also Meleers can be awfully tetchy if your Grav/TA controller targets wormhole through them. Especially if you shout "FETCH BOY, FETCH!" at the same time. They're so unreasonable sometimes!

(in my defense is was to deliberately wind up an SG mate)

Unless he wasn't on your team, sounds like he's a bit... um... "confused."

It's 106 miles to Grandville, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing faceless helmets

Scrappers are touchy, clueless, reckless, little balls of hate. I should know, that's what I play the most.

Anyone is welcome to target through my scrappers. I would recommend to not Target Assist with debuff anchors though . There's a game a defender buddy and mine played. Things were going well if I killed the target before the snipe went off.

Drive by buffing can be annoying if its an unexpected Speed Boost. Otherwise it's people griping to be griping.

He might have been asking you to attack a different target than the one he was attacking. Depending on his damage output, this might have been a good idea for you.

Calling it "leeching" is still inexplicable. Offhand i don't know any definition of leeching that would make the Scrapper's statement make sense.

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

True. If his damage output had consistantly killed the target before my powers finished animating I definitely would have found another person to target through. This was pre-DO level, though (8 to 10) and he was MA and spent a lot of time just standing there after using his two attacks so I figured it would be safe.

Good to see that the scrapper's response was uncommon. The reason I play melee is because I am a spaz at targeting and will cheerfully blast the next closest spawn if left to my own tabbing devices... I *need* that target-through feature.

I just feel that since this is a game the only way to fail is to not have fun. That particular scrapper was full of fail.

I've seen something similar, but only rarely. In one team I joined, one of the Blasters started freaking out when he realized that the controllers were targeting through him. (To be fair, it was the only way to keep him alive - he was one of the "Let's start the attack by hitting an uncontrolled spawn with my biggest AoEWHYAMIDEAD?" clan of Blasters.) He was absolutely certain that the Controllers attacks were drawing aggro to his character. The controllers stopped targeting him after he pitched a fit, and then he started raging that he was dead five seconds into every battle. Frankly, no one was that upset when he swore to put everyone on /ignore and finally ragequit the team.

The team leader didn't believe in kicking people who weren't actively getting other players killed. After the Blaster got annihilated by hitting eight players' worth of Nemesis goons with Fireball, everyone else just made it a point not to be standing next to him if we could see NPCs.

I don't play the melee side as often as the ranged and support ATs, but when I do, I love the siphon power, speed boost, transfusion, transference that my lil kinetic pals bring with them. Strap him on to the saddle horn and let's RIDE!!

I don't have a clue what the deal was then. Best I can come up with is that he thought you were making fun of his damage output by holding his hand on every enemy.
