Help the Newbie Out
King's Row or the Hollows.
At this point, your build doesn't hugely matter. Also remember you can respec (rechoose your powers) later on, if you don't like your choices.

Rock, rock on Hamster.
I am a new player. Hello. I would also like to ask for help in getting an enjoyable gaming experience, meaning I don't want to spend several hours at a time beating one mook. Ergo, I am asking for help.
I have two issues to adress. The first one is about where I should go to continue a regular gaming sequence. I've only reached level six recently, and I've completed the missions I could get in Atlas park. The areas I've checked so far contain either mooks too weak to get experience from, or ones more than double my level. What area should I go to next? The second issue is my power set, an AR/gadget Blaster with tech origin. So far I've gotten all the main power set attacks, and I plan on getting leaping for flavor reasons. Is there any major stumbling blocks for this build (other than late game resistances) or suggestions on what I should take? If this topic should be moved to another sub forum, that is fine. Thank you for any scraps of information that you would be willing to share with a new player. |
Kings Row via the Yellow Line (train) or the Hollows via the "red dot" on your map of Atlas.
As far as an enjoyable exp., beatin 1 atta time isn't the best or funnest way, imo. My advice would be to look for players of your level and start a team or join teams when possible. It will help you level faster and learn more within the game from others.
Have fun. Enjoy.
Yeah I used to be vehemently opposed to the hollows, but I'd recommend them now, especially If you want to team.
The only thing I'd say you would be remiss to overlook in AR/Dev early on is Targeting Drone. You'll run into other issues later on, but don't let anyone tell you AR sucks. it's just different.
Thank you all for your help. I am enjoying my gaming now more than before. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out where to go without assistance in the future.
Welcome to Paragon City!!
As a personal choice, once I hit level 6...I always go directly to Kings Row, get my Police Scanner from the Detective (who should appear in your contact list once you enter the zone), do 3 Missions from the Scanner and then do the Atlas Park Safeguard mish (also received from the Detective who gave you the scanner). From there, I usually head to the Hollows.
Thank you all for your help. I am enjoying my gaming now more than before. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out where to go without assistance in the future.

An in-game option for questions, guidance, or just general help would be The Mentor Project. There's instructions in that thread about joining the N P C channel (for non-trial accounts only), and the people there are willing to give as much or as little help as needed to get you started.
Welcome to the game, and good luck.
Level 6? Head to King's Row.
Walk up and talk to the Detective Contact.
He'll give you a police radio. Use it and complete 3 "Radio" missions. Then the Detective will want to talk to you about doing a "Safeguard" Mission.
When you start a Safeguard mission, head right to the bank, (shown on your map), ignoring all other mooks, and clear all bad guys in the bank, making sure none escape. You'll get a jetpack!
It's good for 2hrs of flight, so turn it off when you don't need it.

Endurance mangement tends to be come an issue for most characters.
There are several approaches.
Slot accuracy into your attacks. If you miss, all the endurance spent is wasted.
Slot endurance reduction enhancements into your attacks first. Damage toggles are also end-heavy. Defensive or movement toggles tend to be pretty light.
Use "just enough" attacks to defeat opponents. If Mook has a sliver of health left, perhaps Brawl, rather than SUPERMEGAPUNCH! would be an appropriate response.
Turn off toggles you don't need right now.
Take the Fitness Powers (Swift or Hurdle at 6+, then Health at 14+, then Stamina at 20+)
Use the Rest power a lot
Convert less useful inspirations to blue inspirations
Some power sets, like Regen, or Ice Armour, have endurance-modifying powers. If you have one, check it out.

Bit of advice: At some point your endurance usage will start outweighing the ability to get it back fast. (New Kid tip 1: Make sure sprint is off when you're fighting.) You'll see a lot of sample builds, or hear a lot of advice, that says "Get Stamina by level 20." This is good advice, but I would tend to say "Try for Stamina sometime between 20 and 24."
Why do you want Stamina? It makes your endurance bar come back much faster.
How do you get it? You have to be at LEAST level 20, and have two "prerequisite powers" from Fitness. (usually one is Health, and the other is Swift or Hurdle. Personal choice which. To get Health you need to be level 14 and have either Swift or Hurdle.)
Why do other people say "20" while I say "20 to 24 ish?" Once you've experienced Stamina it's hard to play without it. You tend to get access to good powers in the 12-20 range which use a lot of endurance. So people want more endurance, sooner, so they don't have to wait around getting bored. So that's why other people say "20". I say "20-24" because it's a LARGE investment, getting three Fitness powers by level 20, and there are often good powers at level 16 or level 18 which people skip to get Stamina. There are a lot of benefits which will help you get endurance back faster; there is nothing that gives you good attacks if you skipped them to get Stamina. So sometimes I find I have things I consider more important to have right now than Health.

For me, when I take Stamina depends entirely on what powerset I'm playing. If there are powers I want before 20 I'll try to work fitness around them to get Stamina at 20. If that's not possible, I'll take it by 24.

Don't be afraid to make your own team once you get the radio. There's a good FAQ if I remember correctly, in the Guide section here. If you read it, you'll be ahead of the game in making good teams and keeping people happy with them.
Mmm...
First welcome to the game, hope it grows on you as it has to many of us.
I am concerned with your post to some extent, but my experience has been that my Atlas contacts would refer me to other contacts in other zones, mainly King's and the Hollows.
Normally when you start the game, you get assigned to a contact, Azuria for those who are magic based such as I, but by the time I am done with her she has passed me on to another contact, and eventually I am referred to a contact at the Hollows or KR. I am wondering if somehow the process is broken and you did not get a reference.
I would suggest you return to your contacts at Atlas, and in the interface you should have a choice for being introduced to another contact; click it and say yes to the choice provided, often you are given several choices, read the descriptions often these choices are related to character power source, so if you are a tech type, look for a contact that would give you missions that gives you tech salvage.
Hugs

There actually is an ingame mechanism to direct you through the zone progression. Contacts give you new contacts when you've done enough work for them. Those contacts will be located in the next zones.
That said, it can be a little complicated. There's additional contacts like the mission architect contact and the University contact who just give instructions. Detectives also show up on the contact list.
My recommendation is to play though 1 contact at a time completely until they're out of missions before moving on. This will give you a continuous story line as well as keep you in the right level range for your toon.
In general you'll get all new mission arc contacts every 5 levels.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.
Welcome to the game.
Just for point of reference, here's the "regular contact" zones (hero side). These are the normal city zones that contain your story arc contacts. There are also special Hazard Zones which may or may not have in-zone stories.
Regular City Zones (story arcs)
Atlas Park & Galaxy City: level 1-5
Kings Row: level 5-10
Steel Canyon & Skyway City: level 10-20
Talos Island & Independence Port: level 20-30
Founders Falls & Brickstown: level 30-40
Perigrine Island: level 40-50
Special Zones and Hazard Zones (levels are rough approximations)
The Hollows: level 5-15 In-Zone Stories: Yes
Perez Park: level 5-15 In-Zone Stories: No
Boomtown: level 15-25 In-Zone Stories: No
Faultline: level 15-25 In-Zone Stories: Yes
Striga Island: level 20-30 In-Zone Stories: Yes
Dark Astoria: level 20-30 In-Zone Stories: No
Crey's Folly: level 30-40 In-Zone Stories: No
Eden: level 35-50 In-Zone Stories: No
Croatoa: level 25-35 In-Zone Stories: Yes
Cimerora: level 35-50 In-Zone Stories: Kind Of (repeatable mission contact and a TF)
6000+ levels gained and 8 level 50's

The previous posters have given you good advice on where to go next (Kings Row is excellent, since the mobs are not too large, you can street hunt, and you can get scanner missions to lead to safeguard missions (and their temp power rewards..), but I won't tell you to stay away from the Hollows (but you should team) since I am fond of the Frostfire mission.)
I hope you enjoy AR/Gadgets. I'm currently working on getting my AR/Energy blaster to 50, I'm at 46.75 now, so it'll be soon.
I don't know if I can give you advice on pitfalls, but I can tell you a strategy that works well. Build Up + Full Auto is a beautiful thing. My character, Gotham Gunman, uses stealth to line up enemies to be in the zone of fire, and once build up fires, full auto kills minions dead. When facing LTs with minions, I usually build up, snipe, then full auto, which finishes off the LT, and clobbers the minions.
I like this attack chain so much, I invested heavily in +recharge so it's available quite often.
Good hunting to you

1. M30 Grenade is a real endurance hog early game, I recommend taking Buckshot first and pushing M30 off until the mid or late 20s when you have stamina and spare slots for endurance reduction slotting
2. Ignite is an extremely powerful attack, but it causes enemies to run away. What you want to do is use Web Grenade to immobilize the enemies (against bosses you'll need to hit them twice with it) and then cast Ignite underneath them
3. Caltrops is an excellent power for keeping enemies out of melee range
4. Beanbag and Taser are both stuns, I'd recommend beanbag over taser since it's got a longer range but if you take both it allows you to easily stun bosses
5. Cloaking Device is less effective than it sounds, the defense is minimal and it doesn't prevent NPCs from spotting you. It's a useful power if you want to be able to stealth missions but the description makes it sounds a lot more useful than it actually is
6. Time Bomb is useless
Time Bomb isn't useless. It's just... umm...
... ever get to a certain point in a sentence and realize you don't have anywhere to go from there?

"I can get closer" and "You can't see me*" - Cloaking Device is of the former. However, you can combine it with pretty much any other stealth power and get the latter. There is Stealth from the concelment power pool, Super Speed from the Speed power pool also has stealth, and if none of those powers appeal to you, with the inventions system there are four IOs - one each for Running, Jumping (sprint, which everyone has, is both of those), Flying, and Teleport powers - that grant stealth to you (Again, "I can get closer") when the power they are slotted in is used and for 120s afterwords. (Those types are usually called 120s or proc120s.).
I think I've seen people use it on tough AVs. They last long enough for it to go off.
