Softcapping sheilds in light of Zephyr changes

I've been playing an elec/sheild scrapper and have gotten him to 41. I wanted to get something in the works in mids so I could have a goal to work towards, but every build I've viewed so far seems to use the zephyr set, some of them with 2 or more. I didn't really need to use them on my sheild/fire tank, though I see it would have really freed up some space. Of coarse thats moot since they altered the zephyr set. Just curious how people have worked around this? My problem is I don't really have extensive knowlege using mids, and I've not tried to softcap a scrapper yet. Any Advice?

My advice would be to put a build together, even if you can't get it softcapped.

Then post it here for others to give you assistance with.

Unfortunately there are no simple answers to your question, so in my opinion is that this will be your best bet.

It will also help you get to know mids better.

An important thing to remember that I go by is that AoE damage isn't too common blueside (Not sure about high-Redside) so you dont have to have that softcapped.

Will save you a few million at least *shrug*

Edit: Got my d-words confused again

You will return, for you are the mighty City of Paragon, the City of Heroes.

It's actually not hard to soft cap without using any BotZ, even for shields. However, it is hard to soft cap *and* have good values for recharge, regen and recovery. In those types of builds, the BotZ nerf will definitely reduce the character's effectiveness, usually in multiple areas.

Still, post BotZ nerf, my fire/shield/blaze will still sport 90% +recharge, good recovery and good regen. She will not however have as good DDR as she before, and overall values for recovery/regen/recharge are lower than they were before.

Bottom line: shield characters are still very powerful, and the BotZ nerf will reduce their effectiveness a little.

Ok here is what I've come up with...I realize its not optimal and it is quite expensive, but none of the set includes purples which I'm trying to avoid at this point. I was hoping to get my recharge up a bit more, and also would I be better off a just going with body master to pick up physical perfection for end recovery? I really hate to give up fire ball because I can see how useful it is at getting those two or three guys in a mob that lightning rod/sheild charge might miss. Also I made this based on the advice that aoe defense isn't as necessary, so am I going to be ok in that respect? I don't mind eating a purple insp here and there if I need to. Also after going over some other builds I noticed that quite a few people slotted membranes in active defense, though I didn't notice any change to my defense in mids when I added/took them away...so what am I missing here? Anyway here is the build...I'm not looking for the most cost effective build, since having something to work towards is fine...I do farm quite a bit, and also run enough tf's. Any advice is great advice...thanks for the replies.

Hey, you're talking scrapper forum here. Everyone has one of those in here, right?

I'd certainly take a resistance IO out of True Grit or a defense LOTG out of Combat Jumping to put a sixth slot on Fireball. Positron's Blast leaves several values low enough it's really worthwhile having another slot, assuming Firebakk isn't just being used as an IO mule.

For fireball what would you suggest I put in the sixth slot? I do plan to use it...though as I mentioned before I also leaning going the body mastery route. Also why would I want to remove the res/def io? would I be better off to slot it in tough or are you suggesting that I remove it altogether?

+Rech IO

Active Defense only needs one slot for recharge. You're better off using that extra slot somewhere else.

Edit: In fact, I suggest just using the one slot in Active Defense for end redux. You don't need any additional recharge for it to be perma.

I also suggest using a Luck of the Gambler: Def/End/Rech instead of the Red Fortune: Defense. You get more HP that way.

With my initial look it appears you are going to have endurance problems. Put the time in to get the four big accolades for the extra endurance and hit points. It's really worth it.

Performance Shifter: chance for +end is a better option in Stamina then one of those End Mod IOs.

Here is my fire/shield build I'm using on live currently. I realize you're a different primary but maybe you can get some slotting ideas from it. I don't use any Blessing of the Zypher, but I do have two purple sets in there(but of course you can skip those).

well if endurance is going to be a problem then phys perfection might be the better route to take. Also that glad armor def/res proc is nice to have to get that extra 3%, but I'm guessing ballpark figure its likley going to cost 2 bill or more. That nerf bat to the Zephyr set really makes sheild scrappers that much more expensive to build. But cost aside they are really fun to play...and Lightning Rod is an awesome power. Anyway thanks for the advice...and I'll be checking back so any future advice is welcome.

Here's a build with Fireball. It has better end management, but still not sustainable. It also has softcap Def to all three positions, as well as much better DDR since AD is almost double-stacked and slotted with Membranes. In answer to a prior question, slotting HOs in AD enhances it's DDR value. The build also has a great deal more Accuracy in all attacks. I'll look into a variant using PP.

edit: Also, it has no purples or PVP IOs.

It depends. If you want to maximize the time your defense debuff resistance is stacked, you want Active Defense to recharge as fast as possible. It makes a big difference, especially if you're only slotting recharge IOs (and not Membrance Exposure).

Doh! I completely forgot about that. Don't know how either, I got the HOs in mine. Thanks for the correction.

Conceptionally I wish they'd come out with an electrial mastery for scrappers. Blaze on an electric wielding hero just seems....out of place, but thats just my insanity. Personally I wouldn't take Blaze on a Fire/Fire scrapper lol

I reworked your build.

It's now Softcapped to all positions, has both lower endurance consumption as well as higher recovery and higher recharge (+10%)

On top of that that Fireblast is now a fully functional power.

All of this came at the cost of about minus 4-5% resistance across the board (well worth the trade IMO).

You'll notice a massive difference in Recovery, this is due to my version having the Accolades activated in mids, which I assume you'll be getting (even with the accolades, your build has about 0.30 e/s less recovery).

I added the force feedback proc to Thunderstrike, you could always remove that for something else, or to simply free up a slot.

Ironically, this isn't going to hurt me that much because I was not softcapped to ranged or AoE to begin with. I will go from around 39 to 37% defense to ranged attacks, but ironically that's not as big a deal as going from 45 to 43%.

I just built to softcap melee defense, and then went for recharge and endurance. It's not a perfect build --- vengeanced Nemesis are annoying --- but it works well, and I'm not willing to sacrifice any of the recharge to get two-odd points of ranged defense back.

Vengeanced Nemesis are brutal even if you're softcapped. I found that out using my fire/shield in a +3x8 mission recently. Don't remember the last time I face planted that fast on a Scrapper. It was a fun mission, I was glad to have some challenge.

Here's my attempt with my BS/SD scrapper. It's a post Nerfing of the Zephyr build. It should be softcapped to all positions (even if I hardly softcap ranged defense).

I have a love hate relationship with Nemesis, they're fun on some days, others I want to eat their souls.

Nemesis, if anything, teach me the value of skirmish tactics.

Can't tell you how fast and shocked I was to round the corner into 20+ automatons who then proceeded to rock me into oblivion.
