Ambushed!
I got a mish in Croatoa to take out Fir Bolg from the Woods. Right then I got an invite to an AV team in Peregrine, so I dropped a portal and went to the mission.
And while waiting, a group of Fir Bolg launched their ambush. The only time I have seen them in PI.
It must have taken a lot of work for them to get there... and to get mowed down by the team at the door. But "A" for effort!
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
I think the best ambush I had was when there was a bug and the ambush was set to the lowest level the ambush critters could spawn at. It was kind of funny trying to be attacked by a group 20+ levels below you. I had them follow me around Talos while I sold drops for a while until someone else panicked and offed them with an AoE. They were like annoying siblings or yappy dogs.

I've had an ambush hit me inside City Hall once. It may have been a bug, but I suspect that they spawned inside the big room.

What would be hilarious would be to see something like that happen to a fresh big group of new recruits to that Iron Eagles SG (the one where if you die you either delete or drop from the group).
Just picture the Eagles having a big recruiting drive and a bunch of new recruits sign up together... Exit Outbreak, and the entire pack immediately gets mowed down by some level 50's forgotten ambush in Galaxy or Atlas. It could happen yaknow. |
I recently started an Iron Eagle character "Knockback Controller" FF/Energy Defender.
I was nearly killed by someone's ambush last night. I hit level 9 or 10 and was headed into Steel Canyon train station from King's Row for the first time. Right as the train drops me off an 5th Column/Council ambush hit a level 30ish character leaving the station in front of me. All I saw was the spill over from one of the flying bots exploding missiles ... and my hit points went from full to single digits... all happened right as the screen came up from entering the zone.
I'm like "Oh No! What's happening?!? I'm in a train station. I should be safe... "
So, now I travel with PFF on, regardless of zone... lol (still probably wouldn't have saved me in this case with the level difference)

But I have to commend you for letting them follow you around! I never thought of doing that. If you were on a team, the ambush could be huge... The thought of that many attackers "yapping" is indeed a funny image!

Not entirely true. You can get an ambush there up until level 10, I believe the cap is. This was on a low-level character, with a couple of Hellions popping up and coming right for me. It was at least a few years back, though.

If that code really exists, it would make sense to simply add a lvl 30 cap to Talos (for example) so people don't get the lvl 45-50s standing around waiting for somebody the wrong lvl to walk by. I don't mind one way or the other, but at least it would add more consistency to the game.
Hmm. I never considered that there could be an internal cap on that zone's ambushes. I don't really recall any pre-lvl10 ambushes though. I'm sure I could be missing one.

Starting contacts give a mission that is essentially "Introduction to Ambushes 101."
And when you finish the mission, the person you were sent to warn about impending danger asks if you by chance encountered any of whatever attacked you.
1) In the Hollows, I'm on an empathy defender around level 40 and see a large team of 50's exit a mission door - the door closest to the Atlas Park gate. They zip off, passing right by the gate and CROWD of low level toons gathered there. It was right after a new powerset had been added so lots of people were starting new toons. A few seconds later, a massive mob of level 51 Malta come from behind a building and follow the same path - through the crowd of bystanders. The carnage was *EPIC*. In a matter of seconds, there were over 30 corpses scattered around David Wincott.

I was playing on a static team last night and we were running radios in KR. The leader mentioned that he had picked up a radio mission involving Outcasts, he set the mish and we took off for the door. I was lagging behind a bit and when I turned the corner, I was face to face with about a dozen Outcasts headed straight for me.
I don't know if that was a really weird coincidence or what. I don't think I've ever seen a radio mission spawn an ambush, and as far as I know, Outcasts don't typically hang out in Kings Row. But these were white-conning Outcasts and I think we were lvl 8 at the time, so it sure seems like they were after us.
Have I just missed the fact that a low level radio mission can spawn an ambush all these years?

Radio missions can indeed spawn ambushes.

My favorite ambushes (in countdown form):
3) In Talos on my way to the magic store from the train, I see a crowd approaching. I was soloing a Malta arc and got an ambush of ELEVEN guys, +2 to me, while solo (3 lieuts. and 8 minions). I was on a scrapper (with Eye of the Magus) so I lived.
2) On the platform of the Brickstown train station. I started hearing the police drones firing and watched as several members of a Malta ambush (Malta again!) FLEW from behind the station, avoiding the drones, and murdered a guy waiting for the train.
