I have been building my base in a very limited way, sticking to base raid principals and such but now i'm ready to step out of the box. Where do I start? I don't know the first thing about floating and stacking, could someone point me in the right direction or help me out with some info? Much appreciated and thanks in advance.

The safe is your friend.

Seriously.

It self stacks and allows you to stack anything on it. I suggest tinkering around with it. Just position it to where you want your floating or stacked object and place said object on top of it.

One other thing, i noticed a bunch of bases have a really high ceiling, some seem to go at least 3 x as high, any tips on accomplishing this?
Not like low ceiling, high ceiling, etc, but there are multiple levels like downstairs, upstairs, balcony lol

When you are in the editor, there are a few different "modes" to edit in. They are represented by the buttons on the bottom editing bar. When you are in "place item" mode, there should be a small window with a graphic that shows shaded & unshaded sections. They represent the levels that your ceilings, floors & walls are at for a given floor area in your room. You can make adjusments by clicking on the sections in that little window to raise or lower them, or to even wall up an entire floor area.

As for stacking/floating, I personally prefer the Accent Lamp + Floor Tile method....
  1. Place Accent Lamp,
  2. Intersect Floor Tile (the big one in "Room Details") with Lamp and slide the Floor Tile up or down the Lamp to desired level.
  3. You can stack the Accent Lamps on top of each other to get more height if you need.
  4. Place whatever you want on the Floor Tile... when you move the Floor Tile, the items will remain floating.
  5. You can even lay out floating Floor Tiles for creating second floors/stories... Set the Floor Tile to the level you want, and remove the Lamps... the Tiles will remain floating, and you can still place stuff (desks for flooring) on them, and remove them later...

I'll try and dig up some pics of my base in its earlier stages so you can get a glimpse of the construction process, but for now, the best thing I can tell you is just to experiment. Now that impish has given you the very basics in stacking, try out all kinds of differnt things until you find something that works for you.

I'll make the same offer to you I make to everyone asking about this.

Shoot me a PM via the board with a time and day good for you.
Create a toon on Protector.
Be on Protector at that time.
I'll recruit you into my SG and turn you loose with a couple hundred thousand prestige and show you how to stack stuff.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Thanks for all the posts guys. Here's the updated version. I have figured out stacking and floating pretty much using safes and lamps mostly. Gonna experiment with more complex styles, just did a small library!

Xanatos that was what I was going to sugest. Honestly that has been the most help to me.

While we are on the topic of base tricks, is there a way to have wall elements float out horizontally from a wall, the way you can use the safe/accent lamp/floor section to stack/float things vertically?

As an example, I'd like to use two tech wall fans to make a big wheel, basically stacking the two fans back to back, or intersecting somewhat. Conceptionally, if I could sideways-stack one fan from a wall, and sideways stack the second fan from the opposite wall, I could do this.

Any ideas? My goal is to have a room in the SG with something that looks vaguely car-like, or vaguely motorcycle-like, and I need wheels for that.

Thanks in advance

If I'm understanding the question correctly, then what you might want to do is use the 'Cubicle' item. Once placed, items that normally only stick to a wall will stick to it, and it can also be floated via the accent lamp to get the right height.

@AresSupreme: Awesome base! it looks fantastic. I might have to borrow some ideas from you.

But I was flummoxed to find that I could not figure out where the handrails were. I had several ledges that could use some handrails like the ones in the med room, but I can't find the rails! Can someone help me find them?

@-@ 10,000 blessings to you for this. I'd been using the Shoji lamp trick, which is a real PITA once you get too far from a wall!

Someone (with more patience than me) should use this to make an M.C. Escher base that you can only navigate with flight.

I looked into the M.C. Escher method and found that it's impossible. The main reason is that certain items, i.e. lamps, cannot be placed upside down to give you the Escher effect. What is possible are ridiculous amounts of stairs that go all over the place. I did a library like that.
