I'm playing on Union... hence why I'm posting this here. ;D
I was silly and assumed that 'Union' was for Heroes and 'Defiant' was for Villains or something when I first started the game, so chose Union. Not that there's really any difference I guess!

Beware of a villain called Golden Girl, She'll pretend to be a hero, then when you least expect it, she'll knock you out, drag you into an alley, and write things on your face with a sharpie.

Welcome indeed. As GG says, when you gotten bitten by the altitis bug and filled up all slots on Union, you have several more slots over at Defiant also.
