War Witch Comments on Bases

War Witch (Lead Designer) recently made some base related comments

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=213333.

My impressions:

(1) Any news about base related development is good news. Nice to hear she has an interest in bases and that they look good.

(2) Looks like an incremental improvement approach to the existing base editor rather than complete overhaul in the near term.

(3) Decorators should be pleased with new "freedom", textures, items, and even themes.

(4) Looks like another attempt at base raids is in the works. Interesting caveat concerning possible system limitations.

(5) Disappointed about not hearing more on the functional side (NPC's or anything else that might "do more stuff" in bases.).

(6) Disappointed that base storage wasn't mentioned (several people asked her about it).

What did you think about her comments?

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom (or freem?) fighter; just as one man's exploit is another man's feature.

I already summed up the majority of my feelings in that thread.

Damn if I wouldn't love to be able to delete several hundred desks and replace them with a few larger items.

Perhaps a feature you'd like is to be able to take a number of items, arrange them together, and then "bake" them, turning them into a single object?

Kinda like grouping objects in Word. Yeah, I have a tendency to keep looking for that option...

I'm hoping for this textures thing to enable us to do exactly what we want with floors instead of using desks. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

That and real water effects.

But I will say that in having to be creative to make what we do, there have been some amazing instances of sheer genius I've seen.

That would be interesting, but I'm not sure how hard it would be to code. Also, the only point to doing such a thing would be if you were duplicating that new combination of items over and over again.

Okay, by that I mean, let's say you have this framework of objects that you place around every telepad you put in your base. It's a couple dozen items that, because you're exceptionally picky/meticulous, have to be placed precisely to get the effect that you want. Now, naturally, you don't want to spend an hour per telepad doing this, so it would be beneficial to be able to group everything (sans telepad), as one group of objects.

The problem is, you'd have to have a comprehensive methodology of 'describing' that group of objects for the item database. (Presumably, this 'group' would only appear in your base's list of items under a 'Special' tab, so as not to make it confusing to find it.)

I suppose that could be done by having a virtual framework.... by that, I mean a defined workspace in the base editor.... sort of a macro-item-editor, wherein you create a collection of items, and give it a unique (for your base/SG) name.

However, it would be far more likely for the devs to create new items that fill the major gaps, rather then creating an extra editor for us.

It's probably impossible without a more fully fledged custom map editor.

I was just trying to clarify the desire, that's all.

Not necessarily. I was actually thinking it would help with 3 things: 1) making it possible to move the items together as a group, 2) possibly increasing the number of items you can place on a map (by compressing some of them into one object), and 3) possibly making it easier for pathfinding algorithms by reducing the number of objects.

Very, very disappointed with this.

Also, the fact that she asked for suggestions, when we have had a couple of stickied, running threads for years, tells me she is .... out of touch.

I really miss having red-name representation.

Well last I knew Sun Storm was our red name, and all I really know is that because they were behind on Rouge the pulled him and his entire team off the base projects they were working on to help finish off Rouge. I do recall a mention that even though Sun was off working to help finsh GR that he was planning on saving most of the skins and items that he was working on to possibly give to us as base builders, WarWitches comments about bases is well proof that the uppper management has given the go on actualy giving us those things.
As for asking for suggestions I'm not sure that she has read through or had the time to read though our suggestion list. Perhaps one person should PM her with the link to that stickied thread?
Well at least bases are getting some love.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Very Vague, no ETA. Which really saddens me.

To be honest I would just be happy with the ability to break continuity for a short time for my base to move rooms around. Well that and not having to tear down an entire false wall to do it!!!!

So long as it's being worked on, that's good. Going Rogue (Not Rouge, dahling, it clashes ) takes priority for now. Im sure once thats out and they get that mass of man (and woman) power freed up, they can start rocking out on the stuff we are yammering for.

Any chance they will amend the silly exchange rate of influence to prestige at the SG registrar in City Hall?

Except that he really hasn't been functioning as "our" red-name. He's always been more of a powers minion. Also, he no longer has a "red" name.

We've not had true representation since we lost Ex Libris and Lighthouse.

Lamentably, I thought the same thing when I read that. "Hello, have you looked at the stickies in the Bases forums?"

A lot of things have been down since they left, including the City Scoop :/

Exactly.

It seems unlikely that bases are going to get serious dev time, but there are some trivially implementable things that could really help base editing.

If I thought anyone in authority actually read this part of the forum, I'd suggest a thread on easily implemented base fixes.

- a selection of bigger "desks" and "crates" to make wall/floor building less annoying

- a nice grid texture for floors, walls, ceilings, to help lay things out while editing

- a stackable safe with a grid texture, for accurate layout

- heck, an object stackable like the safe that was 20 feet tall, with a ruler texture including numbers!

Any of these could be quickly done by an intern in the art department.

Some UI change suggestions:

make a tab of only base-building objects, i.e. stackable safes and crates on the same tab so i'm not constantly flipping around

Suggestions that require a little coding:

Suppose I've just placed SOME_KIND_OF_ITEM. I'd like to be able to hit F1 (or whatever) and have a new SOME_KIND_OF_ITEM pop out on my cursor. You could build walls very quickly, even with today's teeny desks.

-=-=-=-

You folks know a lot more about base building then I, so take the actual suggestions with a grain of salt, but I hope you get the idea. I'd love object grouping and multi-level undo but I know they're not going to get around to that. If we create a well-organized list of low-hanging fruit, maybe they'll take pity on us and throw a few man-hours our way.

I agree. They should appoint me as a community representative!!!

I promise to dedicate the remainder of my playing days improving bases and listening the communities needs. Who wants to design my campaign buttons?

I've come to agree with this... the hard way... but I still like to complain some

After a couple of years "in the trenches" on primarily this one issue (why I thought I could make CoX better by focusing on bases I'll never know), I find myself mostly "laughing so I don't cry" if you know what I mean.

I'm embarassed to say there was a point where setbacks or the lack of progress actually started to affect my physical and mental health. (Can you believe it? Bases in a game I'm supposed to be enjoying? How screwed up is that?).

So rather than go on blood pressure meds the rest of my life I decided to get my priorities straight. Now I'm convinced your philosophy is far better than my old approach.

Oh yeah, vote Turbo_Starr for community rep!

As I recall, they mentioned that the new graphics won't be applied to instanced missions/maps. It is because bases fall under that category that they won't see the new graphic, not because they are being purposely excepted. All the regular instances & maps will still be rendered with the same ol' graphics (there may be a few GR specific exceptions, but I haven't heard definitively on it).

As for low hanging fruit for base improvements, there have been several mentioned in the stickied threads of these very forums. I'm also remembering This Thread started 2 1/2 YEARS AGO.

It comes down to representation and communication.... it used to be much better. We had lists, we had rednames, we were organized... and then we were hit with i13. After that, I pretty much threw my hands up in disgust, and several of our primary players/architects left. Everything since then has had a very distinct feeling of shouting into an large, empty cavern and hearing nothing back but faint echos of vague promises.

It's good news but I really hope they don't make it too easy I love seeing what people have done and how creative they have been!
It's been fun for me to create things they don't have like second and third floors, stairs using decks and whatnot I would like to see them get rid of the flashy effect of two objects meshed I hate that!!!
add more stuff but do not remove the creative process
and Turbo has my vote!!!
