Well I downloaded the free trial about a week ago and so far im liking it. When Im really to start paying to play will I have to buy the whole box set? Or just a card to contune playing?
I wasnt sure if everything but the newest expansions were included in the download I did.

You will need to purchase the game. The good news is that since the various boxed sets include a month of game time, and some other in game items that can otherwise be purchased separately, the cost of the game is pretty low, and sometimes even a negative amount.

Thank you very much. I havent played a pay to play game for years. But i finally have a really good computer and wanted to find something new to try out.
I think Im going to like playing on here. So far the role playing that I saw really impressed me.

To clarify this part.. everybody downloads and plays the same version. It's our account status that allows us to have access to different areas or features.

That means that once you upgrade, there is no need to install or change anything about your current program. Simply open it and log in the same way you have been.

Even if you buy a physical box (instead of buying it digitally from the NCSoft site), all you'll have to do is UPGRADE your trial account and apply the serial code that came with it. If you try installing the disc, you'll just be giving yourself an older version and will have to repatch back to current version anyway.

Thank you all for the answers. Im really looking forward to really getting into gaming with the people Ive seen on here.

Might I suggest getting the "Good vs. Evil" or "Architect Edition" boxes, as both give you access to some nifty items. The AE one gives you access to a free Costume Pack (aka Super Booster). It is very handy having an actual game disc around so that you can install the game directly from it instead of having to download it first.

This link will give you a rundown of what box comes with what.

So getting the Architect Edition would be just the same as if I got the main game, just I get more? Or would I need to buy both game boxes?

It's the same. Basically there are five different versions of the game in the NCSoft store. They all cost $20 and they all give you access to both CoH and CoV along with a month of gametime. The only difference is what perks you get with it. The base CoH and CoV games have nothing else but the GvE, Mac and AE versions all give a perk. Long term you may actually want to pick up all three versions since it basically amounts to paying $5 for the perks but for now you only need one of them. Personally I recommend the AE edition (and selecting the Magic Pack over the Cyborg pack) but the Mac and GvE editions both have some nice stuff.

That's all you need to get started, there are some other things you can get and a full expansion )called Going Rogue) coming in July but none are required to play the game they just add costumes and a couple of minor powers (ok Going Rogue adds more)

Thank you again. If i hadnt known then I would of bought just the normal one.

You could also track down the Collector's Edition boxes somewhere, which give minor perks that there's no other way to obtain. (also some nice merchandise)

To put it simply: yes, exactly! (And no, you wouldn't have to buy both.)

That's why I suggested them!

Also, AE is one where the total cost is a negative value...

AE Box: $20
1 Month: -$15 (you would be paying that anyway)
Super Booster: -10 (impossible to resist. Muahahahaha)

Effective total cost: -$5.00

Also, in regards to the "Special items" people are referring to with the different boxed sets, some of them you can buy as a separate pack from the NCsoft store as well.

For instance, if you go with the Architect Edition, you can buy the special items from the Good Versus Evil Edition from the NCsoft store, and get both perks on the same account.

I personally have all the extra doohickies on my account, save for the Architect Edition (no need for me to get it, since I already have all the Super Boosters). I ended up buying a Collector's Edition box off of Ebay about a month or so after I started playing (which was about 2 years after release), just to get the extra goodies.

EDIT: Also, you probably know by now, but when you subscribe to the game you will have full access to both City of Heroes and City of Villains. Just thought I'd mention it, in case you didn't know. ;o

That works. However, even after buying Architect Edition, it is still wiser to also purchase the full Good vs. Evil edition instead of just buying the GvE items pack. The pack by itself runs $10. The GvE box, at the absolute most would be $20 (possibly even less). And it comes with that $10 worth of items and another $15 worth of game time.

Likewise, the Mac edition (which does not actually require a Mac) also comes with game time, and the Valkyrie items pack (which sold separately would be another $10). All three codes can be applied to your account (just no duplicates).

Indeed. I was just mentioning it as an alternative in case he didn't want to go around searching for the boxes.

If you have a Big Lots! near you, check for older City of Heroes/Villains boxes, as well. Frequently they sell them there for 10 bucks or so, the codes are still good, and still give that free month.

Make sure when upgrading, you go into your account (yellow circle, that sidebar is on all the pages) then hit the upgrade link (red circle).

Also, there is one exception to all the retail codes stacking. If you find and apply a City of Villains Collectors Edition code, you will not be able to apply a regular City of Villains code afterwards.

To clarify the goodies, here's a break down:

The Architect Edition comes with a code that can be redeemed for either the Cyborg pack or the Magic pack.

The Mac Edition comes with the Valkyrie costume set and a power that will let you teleport to your mission. The Mac Edition can be applied to a PC-using account.

The Good Versus Evil Edition is the oldest, and may therefore be found on the cheap.

You forgot to mention what GvE comes with: Jump Jet Temporary Power, Pocket D Teleporter, and the Justice and Sinister costume sets.

Wow, thank you with all the suggestion and the help. Makes alot of sence in buying them for the packs and the month card.

Sure does.

You should be able to find the Good vs Evil version for just over $15. Since it includes one free month of game time (value $15) and free stuff it's a bargain. You should be able to find the Architect Edition for around $20, which also comes with free stuff plus one free month.

I would start with the Good vs Evil edition. If, after a month, you think you'll stick around, buy the Architect Edition next. You can apply one of EACH version of the game. When you apply the code, it gives you the free goodies and one free month.

I had the original game, then added City of Villains, then Good vs Evil, then Mac Edition, then Architect Edition. Each gave free stuff plus one free month of game time.

Yesterday at my local Fry's I saw a whole shelf of both GvE and AE editions, all priced $14.99. Since that would be $25 worth of stuff for $15, seems like a great deal! (They must want to get those off the shelves?)

Hazel Black - Mind/Psi D
Stephanie Winters - Nightwidow
Jacqui Frost - Cold/Ice D
Jacqui Embers - Fire/Kin C
Simone Templar - Fire/MM B
Mallory Woods - Kin/Rad D
Sanguine Melody - Grav/Sonic C
Fumina Hara - Plant/Storm C
Nutmeg - Warshade
Lauren Wu
- SS/WP B

Well, it IS an old game. It's understandable they'd be cheap. Why keep the price high on old merchandise when there's a smorgasbord of new, sleek merchandise that they can charge top dollar for. Older things are priced to move. Just the way it works. ;o

Well yesterday bought the Architect Edition and grabbed the Martial Arts booster. Then found the Good vs Evil online for under $10.

Thanks again everyone for the suggestion and all the help. So far Ive mostly been playing in the Virtue server under the name Gargain and looking forward to gaming with others.
