no badges for the solo hero/villian?

Personally I think the difficulty factor is THE reason for a badge being awarded. It's why we have 2 different badges for doing things like the Statesman TF. Once through and again for no deaths. No deaths is hard, you get another badge. Soloing an AV/GM is hard, give the guy a badge.

I am really failing to see the "No way don't do it" attitude. NOTE: I have NO (not one single character) that could get the badge. I have Scappers and Blasters and I still don't try to do AV's and GM's solo. But I know there are folks out there that LOVE that kind of challenge. And a shiny for the accomplishment, I think, is very warranted.

I know several folks who have Scrappers with the healing badges (tanks and Blasters as well). I was not saying they don't exsist. It's just not "easy" for them. Nor is it their primary role. Thats the point I was making. I mean let's face it, having a Healing shiny on a character that is not a "healer" type (by his/her AT mind you) is in and of itself a very cool thing. You took a mechanic of the game and used it to your best advantage, even though thats not what you were designed to do. Soloing an AV/GM is the same thing. And well worthy of a badge.

I was very vocal before i13's release in saying that Day Jobs were the worst thing ever added to the game, period. I still hold that stance. I'm sick of getting anything where the requirement is to not play a character, be it through farming the still-ridiculous 100M points of damage (my 5½ year old Scrapper had to farm the last three badges, and I played him every chance I got... after all that time, he'd only earned 16M damage through actual gameplay in over 1200 non-afk hours) or the healing badges... or even the mindless repetitive grind of the inf badges where you just do the same thing over and over to maximize your inf earned...

The developers have specifically said that they're deviating from the old way of doing things after the Architect Badge fiasco last spring. They're consciously choosing NOT to add things that require repeated grinding or AFK farming. And as I previously mentioned, they have to maintain a stance that any character has the opportunity to earn any badge, so you can't have one for taking out a GM or AV, and certain low-damage characters probably can't even take out an EB by themselves if things like Shivans won't count.

What you're honestly probably looking for has already been stated: crank up some Ouroboros challenges. That's pretty much where the best solo action is.

And again, as I stated in my last post, this is an MMO. The focus will always be on teaming; putting reasons in the game to specifically not team is actually a bad design decision that would hurt the game in the long run. (Can you imagine being a new player looking for a team, but all the vets are off doing solo quests for solo badges? Not a good first impression.)

-----

Sidenote: I actually earned the first healing badge through using Aid Other on my Scrapper, before giving in and joining a heal farm.

As much as I agree with that, I also agree with the others that it wouldn't be fair to those builds that would never stand a chance.

Apparently, the Devs agree because we recently had that update that dropped the requirement on most of the badges so that they were more "obtainable by anybody/everybody". I doubt they'd turn around and add more badges that would be "impossible for most people".

they better add one for that lame roman taskforce. i play so damn late at night no one is ever on, not that I'd want to group with most people. First i have to be able to get in alone though to do it and yeah I know it can't be done but 1. there is never anyone one the hours i'm playing to do it 2. i need to do it for 18 characters, I won't group with idiots that many times 3. because I'm not in a SG or want to be 4. i'll do it

I'd have to agree with the hole idea of getting badges for solo play, though I have no clue what they might be.

Here's a suggestion though....

Why not have missions that must be completed solo? There are missions that must be completed by a team, why not put the shoe on the other foot?

Just last night I was on with one of my characters that I play almost exclusively when I want to play solo and my contact gave me a mission that I could not complete solo. "Stop the family from fire bombing an office" that was timed and required clicking 3 bombs simultaneously. No way to complete this one solo so I either need to scare up 2 other people just to do some clicking or skip the mission. Skipping the mission means that I can't complete the contact since she won't give me another one till I take this one and either complete or fail it.

So, Why not a few difficult missions that must be done solo that give you a badge for completing them? Ramp up the difficulty, make them really nasty, whatever, but make them a test of you're ability to complete a difficult task without help.

I know the whole game is geared toward "Team" play. But the fact is, like has already been mentioned, that in comics, most "Heroes" go it alone, or in small groups.

There could even be missions that require exactly 2 (A hero and her site-kick) or even exactly 3, (alah Batman, Robin and Batgirl). But the mission must be completed by that exact number to gain the reward. Less and it can't be finished, more, no reward.

To expand on this idea, it would work if you make it a TF contact, and the TF cannot start if there is more than 1 (or 2) people on the team.

To make it interesting, the TF mission window will consist of 3 missions at once. You can do them in any order you want, but doing them in a specific order would make it easier because you get a Temp power of some kind during each mission. The temp power can depend what AT you are, or even if it gives you a choice of which one you want to take. The powers can be super versions of existing temp powers and/or be specialized damage for a specific foe, and they'd disappear when the TF disbands/ends. That would give any AT a fair chance to complete it. All you'd have to do is read the mission dialog and figure out which order to do the missions to make it easier for yourself.

Artificial restrictions on a mission are a bad idea. You'll notice that the developers haven't put in any more simultaneous glowie click missions in since what, Issue 3? They don't exist at all redside that I know of. (By the way, if you want to progress that contact, take the mission and then drop it--you can drop one mission every three days, and it counts as completing it.)

And BloodFairy, dude, it's not the game's fault you don't want to team with anybody. The missions are called task forces for a reason, and you're engaging in an unintended playstyle by trying to solo them. As far as not being able to find a team... I'm not sure what server you're on, but I know that on Victory there are members of my SG on virtually all night until 4:00 or 5:00 AM Eastern and starting again at about 9:00 AM, and we all love running the Imperious TF. You're also even more likely to find a group of people wanting to tackle the TF on Virtue or Freedom. (Of course, if you keep the tone your post had and call everyone on your team idiots when you chat in-game, I can understand why nobody would want to play with you.)

That's... not a bad idea at all! It doesn't go against the purpose of an MMO as long as teaming is still allowed. A TF with a team number maximum rather than a minimum could definitely work, as long as that number is never less than two.

And I'm completely in agreement with this. Personally I want to get badges for actually doing something and to be completely honest, if I can't earn a badge for something specific then I can't earn the badge, and if I really want it then I'll work harder to get it and it will mean more, if not to others then to me anyway.

Actually, I tried that, this particular mission would not let me drop. When I talked to the contact I got "You better hurry up that building is going to go up in flames". No choice to drop it. In this particular case, the ONLY way to complete the mission successfully is to actually complete it with a 3 member team.

This was the reason for my comment. There are missions that require a minimum number of people to complete successfully that are NOT Task forces or Trials. Either these types of missions should be completely removed from standard contacts or missions that require a maximum number of heroes should be added to standard contacts.

For future reference, I highlighted the reason you couldn't drop the mission. You also can't drop a mission that awards a badge, or that is part of a task force / strike force..... there may be some other restrictions as well.

I would think Shivans would work. According to the team window, you're still solo.

I believe that this particular mission also has Merits awarded for successful completion, which could be another reason that it cannot be dropped??

Anyway, the point is, that there are missions that are not task forces or trials that give rewards and that require a min size team to complete. To make things fair I think there should also be missions that require a solo effort to receive the completion awards. For that matter, I wouldn't mind seeing a few Task Forces and Trials that required a solo effort, just for a change of pace.

I know I'm probably in the minority and that's fine. But I like to do both solo and teams and really wouldn't mind if there are different rewards/badges/whatever for each. It might provide a little more variety.

But that's just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions

And I'm quiet glad to hear this. I find the simultaneous glowie click missions to be the most annoying.... "Crap, we have 10 minutes left to complete this mission and have 8 heroes click 8 different glowies all at the same time, but Bill just got face planted and we're all out of Rez's. There's no way he can make it back from the Hosp and through that hoard of trolls in time. This one's a bust boys and girls."

Yeah... the Cavern of Transendence Trial really needs to be lowered to a minimum of 4, rather than requiring 8 players to all click an object at the exact same time.

And like I said in my last post, I'd very much welcome TFs (not standard missions) that required you to start with no more than 2 or 3 players with the option to solo. But again, requiring that you solo anything in an MMO is just bad design.

There doesnt have to be a badge for just EVERYthing in this game imo.

Er... I doubt it could be done to _every_ EB, but before second builds I soloed a few Elite Bosses with a one-attack Empath by the time-honoured method of going away and gaining a level or two. With second builds and the ability to -1 enemies straight off the bat, I should think it is far easier now. Certainly far easier than getting the heal badges on a scrapper, and I think I am totally confident that there is no AT/powerset combination that would find it impossible to get _a_ badge for soloing an EB.

Remember, this is a Massively Multiplayer Online game.
Albeit one that has largely abandoned the early design with forced teaming (lieutified bosses, EBified AVs, no more simultaneous glowie missions, you don't have to go to Perez and hunt 10 CoT at level tiny, etc) for one that is perfectly happy to take your money if you want to solo.

There's badges in the game for all kinds of random junk, like spending 1,000 AE tickets on a badge. I really can't understand the hostility to the idea of having a few for things done solo.

out of all the comments this one pissed me off. in a game with a population going south it seems discouraging anyone new from playing is beyond a bad idea. this was the very 1st MMO i ever played. I started on Triumph back in I3 and played thru a little past the release of Villains before i moved on to WoW. its funny tho, when somebody asks me what i think the best all around MMO is id have to say WoW, but in terms of fun and concept COH/COV wins hands down. i love fantasy swords and sorcery (old pen and paper nerd), superheroes and comics is my true bag. I play this game for that reason, and that reason alone.

oh,

and btw-

...aside from "of the shattered sun" which you get for a lowly amount of 1000g, and "Jenkins" which is relatively easy to get a group to do. the majority of the titles you can earn in WoW require ALOT of farming, insane rep grinds, and above all else the benefit of being in a top endgame guild that doesnt spend hours wiping/and or LFM. no i wouldnt put WoW titles in the same classroom as CoH badges. even "Explorer" the WoW standard for the CoH exploration badges, requires uncovering alot of maps. and the requirements for the "Insane" title? yea, count your lucky stars your not badge-hunting in that MMO.

I know there is no badge for being EX'd, but I was pretty sure the person you are EX'd to still gets credit for being your mentor. Is that not the case? They are so easy to get that I never really paid attention to the specifics anyway. lol

Edit:
I just tried using a lvl 6 to EX a lvl 35 character, and it appeared I did not get any credit for the badge. I then tried using the lvl 6 to SK a new lvl 1 character. Still no credit. I don't even have a progress bar. I'm not sure when that badge starts to "tick" and show some progress, but I don't feel like standing around for hours right now just to test it out. lol

Either way, I probably still wouldn't call them sidekick/ex or lackey/mal badges.. I simply call them the "Mentoring Badges" to cover it all at once.

Nope, never worked that way ever. At least until the SSK system. I've not checked lately, but with the SSK system, it is conceivable that the team leader/mission owner will get credit for a higher level being "sidekicked" to them. However, I don't think that is likely.

The first badge should tick around 15-30 minutes of active play (attacking stuff while in a mission). The first badge is 4 hours of mentoring or 14,400 seconds. 1% should be 2.4 minutes if my math is right, and you need 5%-15% to show.

The problem is that /ex or /mal has NEVER counted as mentoring as far as badge credit has been concerned. By counting /ex or /mal players are being confused as to what triggers credit.

So to be completely accurate they are for having other characters sidekicked or lackeyed to your character.

I have a question about the mentoring badges. With the advent of Super Sidekicking, does this mean that you have to be the Team Leader (or at least the one everyone is sidekicking to) in order to get the mentoring badges now?

If so, isn't this just a badge for being the highest level on your team now?

Yes, you have to be the team leader for street hunting (no active missions) or the mission holder to gain credit.

Pretty much, but note that exemplars are reduced to the team leader's level (no active missions) or mission holder's level so you actually still have to have someone that is lower level to get credit (at least to my limited testing).
