Suggestion: Make it so the Nvidia cards with PhysX Work.

With UM on the horizon, Can we not have our Nvidia cards used to their fullest capacity?

The game currently uses the old Aegia PhysX.

Can get this get updated to the "Now" ?

No.

Thing is with Nvidia PhysX is that it locks you to Nvidia cards. The developers would be in a much better position on support to move to OpenCL for physics calculations. OpenCL will give you the same performance advantages as PhysX, but it will work on Intel and AMD systems as well. This will be a critical factor as Intel and AMD roll out CPU+GPU systems over the next 6months. Gamers will be able to utilize the "weaker" integrated graphics chips for Physics or other calculations while using a better add-in card for graphics display.

The added advantage is that the developers only have to write once, and the code should automatically work across all operating system platforms.

As the owner of a GTX295 I fully throw my support behind this suggestion.

while true, a whole portion of the game code is going to waste. do you know anyone with a Aegia PhysX card?
run a survey to see who has what video card. A lot of people will have a nVidia card capable of PhysX.

And a lot more people will have ATi cards, Intel GPU's, or Nvidia cards in systems with Intel Integrated graphics, or ATi cards in systems with Intel integrated graphics, or Nvidia cards in systems with ATi integrated graphics, or ATi cards in systems with ATi integrated graphics, or Nvidia cards with integrated Nvidia graphics, or ATi cards in systems with integrated Nvidia graphics.

No matter how you cut it, continued PhysX support is just a bad idea for the CoH developers, or any game developers. Just drop it, move to OpenCL. Everybody's happy regardless of what hardware platform they have now, or what hardware platform they use in the future.

Umm not not anyway you cut it.

Comparing Aegia only support to nVidia support really opens it up.

If the option is those two choosing nVidia PhysX is a good choice.

So if "Moving from one brand to the bigger, more widely used brand that bought them" is good, how is "Move to something even more people can use that isn't brand dependant at all" not better?

QFT. If it gives the same performance and allows even more people to use it, it sounds like a great selling point for the game. This isn't City of Elitist.

@Rylas

Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.

Lol - coulda fooled me

Anyways, I agree that the more open you make it, the better is it to survive. If you look at the list of people who Hamstring their clients into using THEIR propriety items, like:

1. beta videos
2. Dvd+r
3. PC vendors like Apple and Compaq (before they were bought)

Unless your product is OMGWTFBBQ awesome, forcing people to buy your accessories for your product usually leads to a shorter lifespan

Why? You can crank the physics to max in this game with an old processor and video card and notice basically zero difference in performance. Until Physics actually DO something, I don't see any reason to change anything.

(now... if you proposed a rewrite to that as well... )

Also, OpenCL isn't what you'd wanna go with, that's too low level, you'd want an engine on top of OpenCL.
