Going Rogue: Quick Graphics Card Question
If he is upgrading he should get an Nvidia 260 because it is far better than what he was talking about.
|
Yet, the ATi card with the same feature set and comparative power, the RadeonHD 4870, is $30 cheaper.
At the same price point as the GTX 260 is the RadeonHD 4890, which competes against the GTX 275. For reference, the GTX 275's are still topping the $250 mark.
Then there is the huge problem that is the RadeonHD 5x00 series. The Radeon 5770, which can pretty much keep pace with the RadeonHD 4870, can be had for around $160.
So... if he's looking to spend $200... he can get a killer deal on a DirectX 10 card from AMD, a card that will outrun the Nvidia offerings at the same price points...
or he could get a DirectX 11 card.
Why on earth would anybody want to buy an Nvidia card right now? It's a plain rip off. You will be getting a raw deal, end of story.
My husband has the ATI 5870 gfx card, I just personally dont like ATI... I chose Nvidia everytime, 30$ bucks just doesnt bother me.
From what I saw on the wiki site, it seemed the two cards were comporable. However, looking at your site I saw data that either wasn't on the wiki, or that I simply didn't see. Either way, the clock speeds on the 9800GTX+ seem faster, though I get the feeling that's not the really important stuff.
Still, will having 2 of these cars make a difference in COH? That's what I'd really like to know.

Has anyone linked Tom's Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart yet?
I personally don't care what Positron said. I can currently do a Ship Raid on maximum settings with zero graphical lag with my 9800GTX. I will be waiting for finished product GR before I even crack my case open.
Ahhhh fair enough, seems like ima need a better card.
I was asking about this one cos it's the card that comes with the pc i was gona get.
dual quad processor
6GB or some kind of high tech RAM stuff
1Tb Hard drive
20000:1 contrast
Pretty damn high resolution, 1920 by ??? non wide screen
high end internet finding connectory devise hardware stuff.
Windows 7. home premium
and the graphics card i mentioned
All i really needed to check was the card.
Now that PC comes to about £650, which i thought was pretty descent but with the new card that'll be arround £900 or so
The good thing is you wont need to upgrade the card for a good while, if you splash out a bit now.
I would have loved to have cranked out on top-of-the-range stuff, but I really dont have that budget atm. So I went for the 9800 GT. Its letting me run on highest with no hitches at all (bar those caused by shite Uni net) So, myeah *shrug*
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

sweet, so will that graphics card be able to play CoX on the current max settings pretty smoothly??
Cos if so then buying that now and getting the newer card later will be alot kinder on my budget =)
*tries to compare stats*
...
*Cerebral core explodes*
I suck with computers ><

It is two entirely different cans of worms.
I can play the game NOW on a laptop and get no lag... So what?!
From Positron_CoH on Twitter:
@Perfect_Pain That's a laptop? If so, probably not. 11:08 PM Jan 24th from TweetDeck in reply to Perfect_Pain Reply Retweet |
@Perfect_Pain I don't think ANY mobile graphics chip is going to be able to push ALL the features of UM on High with an acceptable FR. 10:58 AM Jan 25th from TweetDeck in reply to Perfect_Pain |
@Perfect_Pain A bit diff. We are adding FX to existing art, not re-doing all art. Makes the game look tons better, w/o taking 5 years to do. 12:01 PM Jan 25th from TweetDeck in reply to Perfect_Pain |
I was willing to layout as much as 2000.00$ USD for a gaming laptop to be able to play Ultra Mode on High settings.
On my home PC, When I had the Nvidia 260 I could play the game fully maxed out, now.
Now doesnt really matter. Because when Ultra Mode comes it will be more graphically intense. So I upgraded to the 295 for Ultimate performance.
You may not care what Posi says, but considering he has more knowledge of Ultra Mode than anyone on the forums, I feel I can take him at his word. I didn't end up buying a new laptop, he saved me 2000$.
How does the GeForce 260 and higher graphic cards look currently? I had someone tell me you can really see CoX's age with the newer cards on the market. I don't know if he was warning me not to get the current cards for the game and play Champions( Which Perfect Pain indirectly convinced me not to) or just blowing smoke.
Side note: I am sporting a Nvidia 9500 and see no major changes.

Took the time to download the CO trial version. Now life has an IOU for me with those hours on it -_-
If its better than a 9800 GT, then it will run well. Im running one of those atm, and it runs clean as a whistle, no lag, higest settings. And yes, it looks a tad dated..as it is now. Ultra mode? Game on, baby.

I went from a 260 to a 295 and I just look at the graphics as being pretty damn good for this game.
I have played other games with different graphics and I hate their gameplay... Their shiney graphics dont add up to a pile of doo... cuz I dont stay subbed to their games...
Earlier in this thread I have a bunch of links about graphics cards.
Here click this one.

:edit:
Is that your way of thanking me, for the CO thing? Your welcome. I dont like to see people waste their money on something, especially when you could save that money for a better graphics card.
In a way, yes. Now I am off to see if Star Trek is worth my time. I already have a slight opinion but I want to see what others think of it.

People on the forums here seem to like it. But, they like it in the beginning, will they like it in 6 months? Time will tell.
I love how PP continues to completely miss the point.
Unless your graphics card is obviously ancient and dying, there is absolutely no need to get in a tizzy over ZOMG Ultra Mode right now. Wait and see how your current system will actually handle it, through your own first hand experience rather than projections, before you feel the need to rush out and buy a new card.
ESPECIALLY if you don't know computers.

I don't think CoX gets kick backs from Nvidia/ATI if our Devs suggest to us what WILL play Ultra Mode on High Settings.
So when one of our Devs, at the time the Lead Dev says,
After demoing the Ultra-mode at HeroCon, one of the most frequently asked questions we have been receiving is what are the video cards you recommend to get the most out of Ultra-mode? With the holiday season coming up, we asked the programmers in charge of implementing the features of Ultra-mode what they would recommend. We would like to forward this information on to you so you can better work on your holiday shopping lists. If you are looking to spend under US$100, then an NVidia 9800 GT is your best bet. For AMD (ATI/Radeon), we dont have enough of these cards at this price point to get you good data. This would be the minimum card for enabling all the features, only at reduced quality settings. If you are looking to spend between $100 and $200, the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 260 will do you well. We dont have numbers from the Radeon 57xx series yet to verify if that is better or worse though. This would end up somewhere in the middle of Ultra-mode quality. Finally if you are going to spend over $200, the GeForce GTX 285 is an excellent choice. We dont have numbers from the Radeon 58xx series yet. This would be able to run Ultra-mode with the quality maxed out (except we have no data on Anti-aliasing, so caveat emptor when it comes to that specific feature). Note: This is based on our current internal testing and might change by the time Going Rogue is released. Also, a video card is not the ONLY thing you should take into consideration. Your PC having a decent processor and memory will also enhance your performance. As we continue to test and get more information available we will update you. I hope this helps, and happy holidays! |
I was at the understanding that they are doing Ultra Mode in the first place to attract new players with higher end systems. And to make current subscribers with high end systems happier with the graphics of this game, as they are apparently dated.
I have not said GO BUY NEW CARD, what I said and gave BUNCHES of links to show what I am talking about is, to get medium quality graphics on UM, go with the Nvidia 260 or equivilant.
I love how PP continues to completely miss the point.

Here is the thing, I know about computers. If you are trying to play Ultra Mode on a Commadore 64, you should think about Upgrading because it's not going to play Ultra Mode...
I love how you completely miss PP's point. Lower end graphics cards will not be able to play Ultra Mode on HIGH settings. That is her point and she has gone out of her way to try and say just that without being rude.

<--- will be playing GR with a graphics card that is 5+ years old.
Somewhere wires have been crossed here and this has become personal. I have been told on numerous occasions that I am blunt and unpolished when expressing myself, particularly when I get a burr in my blanket. I appologize to Perfect Pain and to anyone else who I may have inadvertently offended.
I will simply restate that in my opinion, it is better to wait and see for yourself than to rely on someone else's projections and reccomendations. If 'you' want to go with them, go right ahead. It's 'your' money, it's 'your' game experience. I personally am going to do exactly what I said I would do. You can quote Positron in every reply from here to next Tuesday, but I am still going to come to my own conclusions based on my own personal experience.

IMO, if you have the money now... Go ahead and upgrade. And if you can, go as high up the gfx card ladder as your money will go. All it will do is make a better gaming experience.
As I understand it there are some cards out there, that are getting older by the second, that likely will not be able to play UM on even low settings.
Rather than this guy purchase a subpar gfx card when he actually is shopping for a card, it would be better he be armed with information that could help in his search for awesome gfx?
I wonder how my 8800GT will hold up. With City of Heroes, I play it with almost all the settings turned up high, save for the resolution--I keep that at 1024x768. Saves on screenshot file sizes (I take THOUSANDS of them. No lie!).
I'll be doing the same thing with Ultra Mode, depending on how badly my computer takes a hit. I've got a single Intel Kentsfield Quadcore Q6600 and 4 GB of RAM ... Hopefully I can still run the game well. I know Left 4 Dead 2 plays great, at least!
Okay, now I'm a little worried about my 9500 GS running smoothly. Thing is, I also have 8GB of RAM and an AMD Phenom X4 9750, which I hope will help carry the rest.
Hey, it was the biggest, baddest computer I could find.
