Am I doing something wrong vs. LB and ARN

Hey,

I'm back to working on a SS/WP brute and I've hit a problem, Long Bow and Arachnos troops. CoT, Freaks, ect. are little to no problem for me. I'm fighting at -1 lvl +3 so teh minions are all blue to me, but as soon as i get a long bow mission or Arach's I get my but handed to me. Are they just that dangerous or is there something I'm not doing right? I just respect Toughness and weave in and it seems to have helped with the whole squishiness thing but LB still beat me down. I'm careful to pull them with taunt into a corner so they feed RttC as much as possible, but it's still depressingly common to have to hosp.

I've just got to mid 40's and am only using SO's right now. I'm going to start investing in IO as they come along from now on.

P.S. anybody know how to fix my mids export?

I use Ninja run for travel and a raptor pack. Any suggestions?

There are a few changes I will suggest for your build but you should know that Longbow and Arachnos are tough enemy types, so don't beat yourself up too much if they give you trouble.

Suggestions:

1. High Pain Tolerance should have more slots. 3 Heal enhancments and 1-2 resistance.

2. Mind Over Body: 3 resis IOs, 1-2 end rdx

3. Heightened Senses: 3 Def IOs, 1-2 end rdx

4. Combat Jumping is way over slotted, either 1 def enhancement, 1 jump OR 1 end rdx

Personal Preference suggestions:

1. Drop punch or Jab and take Haymaker. I like Jab for Fury building.

2. Take a few slots from Boxing. I will spend 2-3 slots in boxing since I only use it for fury building.

3. Switch a end rdx in for a recharge on KO Blow

4. Add a 3rd heal to RttC and/or remove the taunt enhancment

5. Throw a 3rd heal enhancement in Fast Healing

I also fixed the coding for you:

To start I'm going to guess that you are running out of end.

You get more mileage out of you end redux ehnac if you put them in your 5 slotted attacks than sticking them in your toggles.

Beyond that I immediately see that you've got too many end redux slots in combat jumping. It's already a very, very cheap power end wise.
Depending on your goals and other things, having two def enhnc in there is usually over kill as well.

you have seriously gimped yourself by not slotting up high pain tolerance. As i understand it, your regen is percentage based. Based on your HP. HPT ups your HP, and thus ups your regen

taunt is autohit xpt in pvp iirc, so a rechg ot taunt may be better than acc

give me a bit to really look at it

To echo the others, your biggest problem is that the powers that provide damage mitigation in the form of regen, resistance and defense are woefully underslotted for regen, resistance and defense. Standard resistance or defense toggles rarely need more than 1 SOs worth of endurance reduction, so once you're using SOs, plan for 3 res/def/regen and 1 end reduction per toggle, and just the three slots for passives. HPT is a little unsual since it provides both resistance and regen, so slot 3 res dam and 3 heal. CJ's end cost is *tiny* and it's base defense is small, one def slot will do.

Attacks use much, much more endurance than non-damage toggles, so if you're going to slot for end reduction, that's the place to do it. However, a WP tank with both QR and Stamina may not need such aggressive end reduction slotting. First try correcting the slotting in your WP powers and if you have end problems, slot more end reduction in your attacks, *not* your toggles.

I made this using the same power choices at the same levels as you. (Though I would choose some things differently)
You should get farther on this:

About 100 more hp and 7+ more HP/sec as well as modestly increased res and def
.26/s more recov gross and .09 more recov net as well as reduced attack end costs.

After a certain point, fury makes additional dmg enhncments not worth as much for brutes as for other ATs. So a solid ability to take attacks counts toward your dmg dealing power.

Which is why my DB/SR brute laughs at them! ^_^

As to the OP's build, definitely make sure you have 3 heals in HPT, FH, and RttC. More HP indirectly acts both as resistance (takes more incoming damage to kill) and with WP's high regen numbers, increases the over all damage needed to kill you even more, because you can take more over time without losing HP. HPT's resists are pretty insignificant. If you have 1-3 extra slots available and can't find any place else on the build that would up your survival better (Recharges to up killing speed, End redux to increase sustainable DPS, that type of thing) then go ahead and slot it's resistances up, but first and foremost is the hit point aspect. It increases your survival to all damage types so much more than the resistance does.

1 end in each toggle is more than enough. With QR and Stamina 3 slotted for end mod, you should never run out of endurance. Toss an end redux into your quick recharging attacks (the ones you use most often) and you'll find yourself using 20-30% more endurance over time, on average.

Brutes are funny creatures with Fury. Because of their low base damage, enhancing their damage isn't really as valuable as it is on Scrappers, for instance. More important is Accuracy, so that when you do have Fury built up, it's being used wisely. End and Recharge reductions will increase your sustainable DPS and Fury building, making them more important than actual Damage enhancements. Each attack should have 2 acc, 1 end, 1 rech, and then fill in 1-2 damage as you have room for them. Rage, especially if you slot for it's tohit, can offset one acc generally, but even with that I tend to put in 2 acc anyway, so I can just fight higher levels. ^_^

Personally, I wouldn't bother to slot Boxing at all. 2 second recharge doesn't really benefit much from recharge redux, and you aren't exactly using to for it's fabulous damage. Hit or miss, it'll still give you fury, so toss an end redux in the base slot, put it on auto fire, and let it be. After your fury is built up, take it off auto, and go to town.

/bind <key> "powexecnameauto boxing" should make it so whatever key you select will toggle auto fire for boxing on and off as needed, so you don't have to stop what you are doing to hold down Ctrl and click on the power. If that bind is wrong, please feel free to correct me, anybody. I'm rusty with that particular command, so I may have forgotten it's exact formatting.

Just my opinion, feel free to disregard...

Huh. I never had any problems against Longbow or Arachnos on my SS/WP Brute. And no Fighting Pool, either.

I do slot 1 End Reduce into all my attacks and shields, and High Pain Tolerance has 3 Heal and 3 Resist Damage in it. Maybe it's because I was using Common IOs?

Well, since you asked so nicely. It's actually /bind <key> "powexecauto Boxing"

The problems with LB are several most PU teams I see do not know how to fight them. The nulls drop those sonic grenades and the PU teams always seem to want to fight in the very middle of all them. Also the Sonic greande affect on you lasts about 5 seconds after you leave the field. I thought it used to stop as soon as you left the AOE. Not to mention the Special OPS END drain etc. LB also do -3 Stun protection, and -Defense. Being in the middle of all this can get very dangerous.

Arachnos has its own issues with the hated Blindness and Toxic.

As most have already comment on the build I thought I would focus on these foes.

I do agree with nearly all the slotting advice so far as well.

Longbow also like to stay at range, which puts them out of the reach of RttC, and Arachnos also has a fair number of range-only mobs (Fortunatas, Mu, drones, etc.)

Assuming solo on +2/x8 of course, duh.

With standard IOs and no sets, I might be inclined to do something more along the lines of this:

Some points:
  • I filled out boxing, and switched to haymaker from jab. You can add brawl in your attack chain to help you build fury and you need boxing for the fighting pool anyway. In a build using IO sets, with Global recharge I would not slot boxing at all, but this isn't the case here.
  • I gave all of your attacks a simple layout for slotting, but you'll need to modify them to your tastes. Having rage means you might even be able to get away with no accuracy enhancements.
  • Speaking of Rage, I added hasten into the build which will give you periods of perma-rage, which is good.
  • I gave combat jumping just a single defense IO. It doesn't need more slots then this, and it absolutely does not need endurance reduction. If you want to reduce endurance costs, do it elsewhere - combat jumping costs basically nothing endurance wise.
  • Mids has all of the powers slotted with L50 IOs, but you don't need L50 IOs. You can drop those down to L35 IOs, they'll be cheaper and you won't really notice the difference.
  • I would HIGHLY recommend looking into at least frankenslotting your powers for performance, using cheap sets to do so. A lot of sets can be had very very cheaply, and they will do wonders for your play performance.
  • I slotted your defensive toggles conservatively, with both QR and STA you might want to consider 1 End Rdx and 3 Resistance or Defense IOs, depending on the toggle. This is if you decide to not pick up any sets of any kind.

Good luck.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the advise so far. The slotting looks odd because I've placed them for eventual IO set placement.

This is my future build so far.

So for example 4 slots in CJ are for Zephyrs, also I've played with Mu mastery instead of Soul and find it much nicer. Electric fence + Ball + Static Discharge + Foot stomp give lots of AoE potential.

I'm looking to Max out Defenses Fire/Nrg/Neg/Cold. Should I look at a different strategy? Max HP and Reg?

I've been using Haymaker since i first rolled the toon and find the knockback a real pain. especialy with RttC. So I'm trying an ST attack chain that includes Boxing. The stun is nice, it lets me use the Stupefy set which gives some nice bonuses. Feel free to critique.

Also how do i fix the code? I'm using the export feature using the official board option in Mids.

Don't worry about how to slot after you get your IO sets.
You can earn three respecs via respec trials. Additionally, you will get respecs via veteran rewards, and the occasional new Issue. And they are available from the NCSoft store for $9.99 iirc

So slot for what you're doing now and then when you're ready, respec

Don't worry about it--the data link worked and that's what's important, IMO.

Better, though your slotting could still use some work.

You have a single Doctored Wounds Heal IO in HPT--there is absolutely no benefit to slotting a single type set enhancement without others of the set; you're not getting a set bonus and it has the same value as a common IO of the same level. I also think the Psi/Status resist not very useful since all you're getting is 3% Psi resist. You'd be better off going with common IOs unless there's a specific set bonus you want.

The Aegis in MoB is fine, but keep in mind that F/C defense is among the least common damage type you will run into, if you're slotting defense, that's not a good first choice--S/L is.

The BotZ -KB gets you a small amount of F/C def, but considering it's cost and the fact that WP doesn't need KB protection, I think it's a waste of influence, and that slot better used elsewhere.

RttC doesn't need a second end reduction slot, pull it and put it in QR or Health, both of which are under/unslotted for recovery and regen.

Heightened Senses is overslotted, pull two slots; several of your other WP powers are only marginally slotted, so use them to boost the totals closer to the ED cutoff or for good set bonuses.

Likewise with Tough--the fifth slot isn't needed and F/C defense should not be a priority. In general, I would recommend Reactive Armor for resist sets since it gives more desirable set bonuses.

EDIT: If you really want to slot for higher defense you need to think about slotting your attacks for defense bonuses using Kinetic Combat, Eradication, etc. However, at the very least you should slot a Steadfast Protection +Def in one of your resist powers.

But altough defense is very useful, the two key types of damage mitigation in WP are regen and resistance. Here's your build, with just a few slots moved around to more fully slot your WP powers. Note that although the F/C def total is lower than in your build, all the other totals are higher:

1) Try Long Forum Export->phpBB / Zeta Boards -> Fruit Salad
2) Check export data chunk as well as data link, because errors have happened recently with those links.
3) ???
4) Profit!

Finduilas is offering some solid advice.

Hello again,

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions.

After reading Tonality's guide for SS/WP IO'ing and comparing it to mine I thought "Wow I'm terrible at this." And have started from scratch.

So here is my new try for a Defense centered Brute

Any Suggestions?

Also I am planing on alot of Solo play with this toon. Is Defense the way to go or should i be looking at a recharge build instead? Or Regen/HP?

Here are a few things I spotted:
-I really don't know how effective you'll find static discharge to be at end drain, given you have no other real tools available like power sink. I would probably either skip over this power, or use it for damage, even though the damage is quite lackluster compared to the others.
-Hasten is always nice to have. Getting footstomp to fire faster is wonderful. So, I'd drop static discharge, and move two slots over into wherever you want. I liked getting more HP by getting a 3rd LOTG bonus in two powers.
-You have a lot of accuracy in Elec Fences, and could probably use others in that set for more efficiency. Maybe drop the acc/end for an end/immob if you like that set.
-You won't use boxing that often to need the 5th frankenslot. I'd leave it at the set mule and be done with it.
-I'm not a big proponent on slotting for +res on High Pain Tolerance due to the base numbers being so low, while the +HP value is a lot more effective.* You do want to hit the ED cap first on HPT and then you can think about other things.

This last comment is the complicated one:
-You're over the limit for 1.88% HP by two, so you aren't getting any benefit from some. That means you have some options:
1) Drop the two Performance End/Accs for a generic End Mod in both for more recovery.
2) Drop the bonuses in HPT and RTTC. HPT will be 4 slotted with 2 miracles (+recovery&heal) and 2 numinas (heal&heal/thecheapest) for more regen.
3) Drop Gaussians and something else.
4) There's also the possibility of 4 slotting stamina with your two free slots from dropping static, 3 of those being efficacy and 1 being the perf proc for more HP/recov.

I personally like option 2.

*Shown below is how much damage your brute could take if you slotted an additional slot with either a heal or resist IO. The Heal IO is more effective outright, besides increasing your regen over time, widening the gap even further! I'm not strong at math, but this is pretty basic.

Slotting 1 additional resistance IO into HPT gives 1.43% more resistance to all (2190 on this build)
*Max S/L dmg with resists at 51.1% -> 3309
*Max E/N dmg resist with resists at 7.1%/8.9% -> 2345.49/2384.91

Slotting 1 heal additional IO into HPT gives +49 more HP (2240 on this build)
*Max S/L dmg resist at 49.7% -> 3353.28
*Max E/N dmg resist 5.6%/7.5% ->2365.44/2408

Where can i find the Maximums for IO set bonuses. I didn't know there were any.

I found that dark watchers despair chance for -recharge. I'm kinda thinking good idea there. But we'll see.

That's wonderful to hear!
I should clean up that post and make a player guide called "The Art of IOs: demonstrations on a SS/WP platform"

I might get to it this week.

First the question. I'm not sure which of these things you're asking, so I'll answer both:

There's a limit of five of one named set type (small bonus, huge bonus, ultimate bonus, etc). You can have 5 of each type in your build. The exception is named IO bonuses like LOTG 7.5, which is listed under its name, so you can have 5 LOTG 7.5's and 5 7.5 recharge bonuses (which you find in basilisk and kinetic crash). To find if you are over the limit in mids, click the "View Active Sets" button, which is just above the secondary power set drop down menu.

The other possible thing you meant was how to look up what sets have the maximum bonus of each type. To do this, go to the Window menu in mids and select "Set Bonus Finder". Here you can select any category and it will list the various sets available for each bonus type and filter them by strength. It also shows you how many slots you need to get that bonus. It's very handy to know about when you're working with unfamiliar set bonuses, such as one time I wanted to cap a scrapper's fire resistance without taking temp protection, so I needed to see what sets offered fire resistance.

Now, onto your build.

I don't find procs in toggles to be all that useful, and I'm really doubtful you'll notice much from that DW -rech proc in RTTC. I'm thinking that you'll be happier finding another spot for that slot.

Fast Healing is better than Health. You want to have better enhancement values on fast healing. Simply switching the two around yields 8% more regen.

Kinetic Combat is a great set, but it has terrible accuracy. You will benefit greatly from global accuracy bonuses on your build. One of the easiest things you can do to get global accuracy right now is change those 3 slotted LOTG sets to 4-slot sets for a total increase in 27% more accuracy. That should be a noticeable difference.

To do this, I'd swap out the generic defense IO out of combat jumping (it's only giving you 0.5% def), and move one slot to Indom Will, and take that dark-watcher proc slot to Heightened Senses. Then, take the generic end IO out of weave and replace it with the LOTG triple.

You aren't gaining any real survivability with that impervium unique in SoW. I'd slot up a generic resist IO, or throw the steadfast 3% here instead to free up a slot for something else.

You may find in-game that footstomp burns through a lot of endurance. You could change that Scirocco dam/rech to a dam/end for a slight decrease in rech. There are various slotting choices you can go with this set-combo that offer various advantages and disadvantages. I won't advise you to go with one specific choice with this set combo because each works well in various situations.

There are always things you can change about your build. Your build will perform well as it stands. Adding the few minor changes will enhance your capability, however deciding on slotting like footstomp and other things similar to this is where personal taste really becomes visible - and the line between 'standard' IO slotting techniques and personal taste is clearly visible.
