Anyone ever buy or sell a print?
Never bought any...
Would possibly. Would probably be more likely to if it was simple to get one of a pic I ordered (would save me hassle of getting it done elsewhere when I get to that) but I would potentially buy one of more general art... But if so it would be unlikely to be a character and more likely to be more... er, I don't wnat to say more real art or something which could be taken the wrong way... But more something I'd be likely to put up in my front room as opposed to my computer room?
There's actually a couple things I have favorited on dA which I would consider getting but I haven't looked at pricing, sizes avail, or if they're even offered as prints yet.
They should all have a click here to buy this print button if it's available as a print... I see the buttons a lot I'm just not sure if anyone ever uses them?
The prints on DA seem really pricey to me, and the markup is ridiculous. At the default price, the artist makes ~10% of the print cost at best, depending on the item.
For something like a $5 magnet, the artist gets 16 cents!
Whenever anyone's inquired about a print, I tell them I'll send them a file and they can take it to Kinko's.
DA is evil and will eat your babies and don't give them money. The end. :3

The Guide to BURN
I bought a 'print' in the form of a puzzle, mostly because it was a puzzle with cool art then :7 I have never sold anything.
Wow, I've contemplated buying a print or two for my son but never realized it was DA that got most of the money not the artist. That changes things dramatically.
Although I know some of the DA artists have their own sites that you could purchase prints from. Maybe that would be the route to go CR. |
Also, to be fair: DA does offer a premium print account to artist for a yearly fee. If you sign up for that, you get a larger share, and can also increase the print price if you so desire.
I've never sold a print through dA, but I have via my site (and not just the commissions, I have a couple pieces on there specifically made for prints)... which I like much better because I actually get the money =P
Thanks for all the replies... I never realized it was that skewed either... I'd be willing to give them 10% and keep 90% but not the other way around, that's just wrong.
So I guess the premium print account makes sense if you are a well known artist with a huge fanbase... DA gets their money up front but it's worth it if you sell enough prints?
Ah well it's neither here nor there I'm just thinking way down the road it would be nice to have a way if people ask to just send them a link to where they can order a print if they wanted to.
Wassy on your site if someone orders one who does the printing? Where does the order go?
The order goes to my email inbox and I get the print from my local printshop and send it. They're pretty close by and I'm over there a lot and they're very good. My costs vs. the price I charge gives me a much nicer profit margin, but the print cost is competitive.
I never got serious into selling prints on DA, though I still offer a few and have sold more then a few, I never really made money on it.
Generally if I need prints myself I go through fotki. Their site is easy to use, the prices are reasonable, and the service is excellent, plus they'll send you calibration pictures.
I think what always urked me about DA was the complete lack of feedback when they denied a print. And really unless you're making tons of money for them they won't advertise your stuff either so... don't go into it expecting to make cash from them.
For that set up your own site and use something like Fotki or a local print shop.
Ok I went and looked over Fotki and the prices and what services are available look good
for prints and would leave a decent margin for the artist so thanks for that Ransim.
I'll look more at local print shops down the road a bit too because it would be nice to have local
accountability and an actual person to talk to if there was a problem with a print rather than a canned response email.
Funnily enough the $5 fridge magnet Foo mentioned an artist getting $0.16 for from DA costs $5 on fotki. No 16cents for you!
I personally have not, but my daughter has sold some. She sells more directly at conventions. Her general idea was that is was not bad, but she would not put her best stuff up, its great for a couple extra bucks of the ones she does not actively print to take to sell.
Her work though is not CoH related though.
I sold some and didn't even know it.
It came up recently in my art thread about starting a DA page that the classifications don't matter so much if you don't plan to offer prints which makes me wonder... has anyone here bought or sold a print on DA?
Was the price reasonable (don't have to say what it was)? Is the service good, are the prints of good enough quality? Who sets the prices and how much of a cut does DA take?
Also is it something where you only buy if it's art done of one of your heroes or would you buy a picture you liked of someone else's?
Any artist here ever gone through the process and sold some?
Not sure I've seen this mentioned in a thread recently so I'm curious if it's a common occurrence or is it a useless feature if your name isn't Adam Hughes?
