Corrupters.
Well most corrs that do well in 1v1 at least have a self heal, sonic/cold is all offense with hardly any defense, which is why most heal-less secondary corruptors go dark for a self heal. (mainly cold but i've seen storms and sonics do the same).
1v1 what will do well is
sonic/therm
dark/cold
fire, sonic, dark blast/radiation emmision
dark/storm vs melee's, but nowadays they have ALOT of -tohit resist so i'm iffy on this one
elec/kins can do ok like elec/therms but lack of self heal hurts unless fighting melee toons
and pains do well, tradeoff debuff for regen boost, personally i'd rather have more debuffs
For 1v1 you want rad/ fire/ or /sonic. In some outlying cases elec/ and dark/ may make the cut as well, but they are generally secondary specfic(see: dark/cold and elec/therm). For secondaries you are really looking at just thermal for top end easy of use 1v1ing. All other secondaries have some kind of catch to go with them that may make it tough for people who are not used to the playstyle.
Not having a self heal and having to learn proper inspire/hiber/phase management is not an easy thing for alot of people. I have seen a couple non dark/ colds do decent but I would never consider recommending even dark cold to somebody unless they were extremely well versed on 1v1ing. Another decent/rare build for dueling is /dark miasma. This also is not a very good starter build.
From reading the op you should probably just roll with the fotmness and do elec therm. Yes its an easy build. No one will ever want to fight you. It is however the build you seem to be looking for as far as straight forward and ease of play.
Duel me.
I will work on my sig pic more when I have time.
Ok here we go, my experience so far on my corruptors;
hopefully this will provide a few ideas.
- dark/cold - good toon. pretty challenging when it comes to 1v1ing, as it relies a lot on that kb. i went /mace, but should have gone /hibernate to to deal with those bad SR scrappers where i have to wait til elude drops. i mainly use it to farm for pvp ios (ie, get on regin ignore lists). anything with really good burst that forces you to pack anything other than 90% greens is a challenge.
- fire/cold - pretty beastly. one of my favorite toons ever. yes, it is only a shadow of what it was in i12, but it is a really fun zone toon and it can destroy many things in 1v1s which my dark/cold can't; good SR scrappers, good fire blasters, etc (also use it to farm pvp ios from bad regins). still gets destroyed by every psi/em even if they're bad or half-afk.
- elec/therm - nuff said. playing this requires 3 brain cells and can be done while eating a sandwich; but the same can be said of most of the toons played in freedom arena.
- sonic/therm - played it from i10 to i14, then rolled an elec/therm. good team buff/debuff toon.
- rad/storm - constantly wish it were an elec/storm, but shreds through melee more reliably than any of my other toons. psi/em and sonic/ems destroy it because my build is not as good as it should be; it can stand up nicely to a fire/em though. pretty strong toon overall.
- fire/sonic - shelved til further notice.
- ice/kin - shelved til further notice.
Here's the thing Ares. I know you like to be the snowflake and play non-FoTM toons that are different. That doesn't really work with Corruptors. Corrs aren't as forgiving as the toons you normally play. There just aren't as many options that are truly viable when up against the best that is out there (Blasters) for 1 vs 1. That's the reason there are so many Elec/Therms being played. It can beat pretty much everything with a little practice.
That being said, I think Fire or Sonic Blast paired with Pain Domination would work best for your play style. It can do alright in duels and is a great support toon for teams if you ever decide to go that route.

if you have alrdy invested the time into lvln the sonic/cold up then i would just stick to it. where is it you think your lacking in? no self heal? get aid self. /cold corrs can be ran staminaless very easily. they are not the easiest to 1 v 1 with, but you can do exceptionally well. i used to roll a lol elec/cold corr for 1 v 1, had ss/sj/phase and aidself, took conserve power from epic. im sure alot of other players will just tell you to roll sumthn else, but im a firm believer in stickn to what i invested time into. keep your sonic/cold, invest about 500-600M into it,and have fun with it.
note: when i used to run mine, i had it to where heatloss only had like 8 seconds downtime, something like that. CP for was if i lost a match and HL wasnt up yet.

with arctic fog SS/SJ/acro etc it gets pretty end heavy plus on a dark/cold you are constantly throwing attacks because you need to be pretty aggressive for it to work well.
'
was your before DR? I dont see how you can have 8 sec. downtime on HL in i13 setting
i didnt take artic fog b/c of the interf with stealth. yes it is curerent times, like i said "might" be 8 seconds..id have to go check to be certain, i know i never had endo issues tho. but i am def gonna go check to see what my downtime on HL is now.

...Why would you run Stealth instead of Arctic Fog when AF is better in every possible way?
"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
Lots of good stuff in this post, specially the one where someone noted all their corr experiences thanks. I don't necessarily run toons JUST to be different but I don't want something that is likely to get nerfed...but uhh...hmm...I just hate heat x and think it will be nerfed, but I am indeed looking for the best of the best.
I think anything with a self heal (not enemy targetted) is solid for pvp.
There are others that will work but will be more difficult.
xCHAOSx - "well, when i made him i i had both, and learned that you cant run both together, so i ditched AF. and how is AF better in every aspect? it offers a very small increase in def over stealth, doesnt have def to all like stealth does, and it costs more endo to run than stealth. so...if you wanna run concealment pool with med pool, you can limit yourself to only takn 3 powers rather than 4 to fit in AF. the benefits just seem all that great. you can slot the same stuff in stealth as u can in AF. just my 0.02 tho. everyone plays different, thank you for your input tho."
I agree with Mac...Arctic Fog edges out in front of Stealth for a few reasons:
- Stealth & AF provide the same stealth value I think
- the difference in the endurance cost is very minor
- with the current Defense mechanics, the few points VS all that Stealth provides isn't
a big deal which I think you lose once you attack
- Stealth has an inherit negative movement speed aspect
- Stealth provides a self buff, AF is a team buff
- AF allows you to slot for Defense and Resisitance; depending on the build, you can
probably max out your resistance to fire, cold & energy attacks
- AF provides resistance VS runspeed debuffs and recharge time debuffs

Really? Are you referring to melee's who can't kite you (i.e. Spines or SS toons) or who can't mez you? The reason is because when I fight stormies, I am the one looking to kite them and only move in once in a while and preferably when Hurricane is down. I don't hang around LS or tornado. And with taunt, I can kite with a little edge over them.
@Antigonus,
On that same note, an MM, /thermal is a beast. In fact, if an elec/thermal faces off with a /thermal MM, the MM is the only one playing for a win in that match. So, elec/thermal might not be able to beat everything. Also, I have seen a good illusion/emp beat elec/thermal. With recovery aura, hib, geas, blues, and pets out, the ill/emp was the one with the initiative in that fight and he earned a good victory.

My sonic/dark did good for a while. Good self heal when it hits. Defense based melees are tough to fight.
Blasters are fine to fight except psi/, stupid placate is twice as worse for a /dark since you have to quickly target and hit your heal to survive.

Toons with the aura-heal type powers should really never die in most 1v1 arena situations (Emps/Pains/Rads/Therms).

But it is quite the road before you ever get to that point. I mean, before you start to scourge them, you got to survive their attack. I don't see how being a storm helps you survive vs melee, unless they can't kite you or they can't mez you. If they can, it should be an uphill battle for you. That's what I am talking about. |
eh, it rarely is.
-to-hit is really underrated + it's not like you're really gonna be able to outrun a hurricane when my sole goal is to play gerbil with your ********.

Melee resists vs to hit debuffs (especially from their APPs), mixed in with the ability for many to mez you perhaps is being underated, throw in Rage if they are SS... Melee does not want to outrun you. They want to get in close on their terms but they don't run. |
but i've fought craploads of /regen downies, a shield scrapper or two, wp brutes, elec tanks, and they generally don't get a single kill.

Also, if taunted, you will have to risk getting KOB in the face , and that extra accurate attack will drop your offensive toggles as well. From range, a well timed mez will do nicely too, then u got KOB to worry about or a very nasty flurry with rage double stacked, or both ! That 3 hit chain, fossilize, KOB (even nastier with procs), flurry will most likely make you hit hib, and if you are defender, probably phase, or just wipe you out right there.

I heard that sonic/cold was pretty amazing 1 v 1/arena..and well, so far...it seems like i need to invest a ton of cash into mine to even make it playable. My question is basically, what are some pretty decent 1 v 1 corr builds? Elec/therm....no ty...but any other recommendations noted.
