I'd like to thank God and the gays

I said this in broadcast as a little joke after killing Babbage during a Synapse TF and someone managed to sick an 'Inappropriate Language/Harassment Warning.' on me. For most of you who don't know this is a quote Lady Gaga said during an awards speech during the VMAs.

Now if someone could please tell me how saying that is harassment I would totally love to know. The GM isn't doing a very good job explaining it to me. It almost sounds like NCsoft is okay with anti-gay people running their morals department.

Thanks to those who manage to explain to me my alleged offence.

Anything that anyone "could" take offense at is grounds for a warning. If someone thought a comment about peanut butter and jelly was offensive, the person saying it could be reported.

The GM's have authority to decide on the context of the message sent.

Regardless if a celebrity said it, it does not make it right that you can say it, in a text based game, where people can not tell the context of it being used.

Some people make take offense at the word "God" as well as some may take offense at the word "gay." Just because you may find the words non-offensive, others may feel that the words are inappropriate or being used inappropriately.

Also to note: this is a teen rated game. Some things discussed in broadcast may not be felt as appropriate by parents/legal guardians of their children (13+) that play the game. Parents have the right to report things that they feel as inappropriate and a GM has the right to review it and make a decision on the context the statement was made.

In the end it's NCsoft's call. You may not agree with it, but each time you log into the game, you accept the EULA which states that they have the right to determine whether or not something violates any part of the EULA. If the comment was reported as harassment, then the statement falls under that clause.

If I were gay I'd be outraged at Lady Gaga assuming I liked her horrific music.

It's like the mid-90s never went away

Who the finds either the word god or gay offensive? Probably the same people that find peanut butter and jelly offensive.

Like i said I wouldn't worry about it just some over sensitive prudes.

I made some additional comments to my post. It's not whether or not that you, or others find it offensive/not offensive... it's whether or not NCsoft feels that it violates, in any way, a part of the EULA agreement that you acknowledge when clicking "I Agree."

Basically, if someone is not comfortable with what was said, or what was said as the rebuttal, then people have the ability to petition the comment or the aftermath.

The two things I'm worried about is one: This is on my record...or how ever offenses work. How many am I allowed to get before they delete my account? I've gotten one before already.

And two: NCsoft approves that it's okay to be offended by gays. Why is it okay to have super heroes run around in bikinis but not say the word gay?

Your record? that kinda made me laugh sorry. What do you consider an offense? I still wouldn't worry either way.

I don't know how the warning system works. Like if you get 3 warnings you get your game suspended for a few days or something. It's a stupid offense and I can't believe a game where the primary costume choice is brightly colored spandex is afraid of the word gay.

NCsoft has always been very supportive of the LGBT players of this game, so I wouldn't be concerned about that. I suspect that someone not familiar with the context of the quote thought that you were being sarcastic (thanks a lot!, as in it's their fault) or somehow disparaging. Without any additional context of what had been going on at the time, it just sounds like a case of misunderstanding to me, and I wouldn't worry about it.

Please show me any comment where NCsoft said it's okay to be offended at "gays."

NCsoft has the right to censor ANY comments, regardless of sexual preferences, because it's their game. If they don't feel the need for "real life" controversy within their game, they have the right to censor anyone that logs in.

Once again, the "I Agree" button constitutes that you agree to their EULA in every way. Not in parts that are found to your liking, but to the parts that are not to your liking as well.

And if this is a troll thread to rile people up because "gay people should be offended," then you missed the mark by 5 years when CoH was introduced. This game has a rather large population of gay players, characters, Super Groups, Villain groups, etc. Gay, Bi, straight, and any other kind of player have been accepted since day one.

Also, who's to say that a gay player wasn't the one that was offended and reported you? It's possible that someone thought that you were trying to pick on someone.

It's all about the (lack of) context that people don't get when you are playing in a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying (text based) game.

It's not the word itself.

NCSoft has to protect their own interests. If this person was ofended by you when you said God, or Gay, either or....then NCSoft has to say something to you because you offended them.

If you had offended somebody by saying the word 'Cancer' and they got offended because they had a relative who had cancer,it's not because NCSoft is afraid of the word 'Cancer' that you got reprimanded.

But, really, I wouldn't worry about it. They're just covering their butts, and I don't blame em. I'd just drop it.

I don't care that it was reported. I care that the GMs went on with the report and gave me a 'warning' You can have LGBT SG/VG but you're not allowed to use the word gay in broadcast? You're allowed to be gay but not say the word gay? Would I get the same warning if I said "I'd like to thank God and the straights"?

I'm not troll and I don't find it amusing that you called me one. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this "Harassment Warning."

It's all about the context, of which the GMs might not be able to see all of. If someone reported you, that have to stick by the letter of the EULA, or as close as they can. Obviously, what you said, the GMs feel was inappropriate enough to deserve a warning.

Yes, you can be gay. Yes, you can say the word gay. But in different contexts, saying 'gay' might be seen as offensive to some. You don't get to tell other people what they can and cannot be offended by. Obviously, somebody felt strongly enough about it to report you, and technically, it does seem to fall within EULA-disapproved language.

Just because a celebrity said it, does not make it appropriate to repete in another medium and context.

No one can tell me how this is offensive without saying being gay is offensive. I guess that's all I needed to know.

There is nothing wrong with being religious, or LGBT. What's wrong is this post. I agree, personally, that the decision is wrong--but what you need(ed) to do was take this up with CS or a community manager, not post about it.

It's kind of tainted fruit, now. Good luck.

I apologize for the troll comment. But, you could see where that was offensive, correct?

Well, many people don't find offense when they are not on the receiving end, just like you had no idea that people would be offended at your comment.

And the warnings are just that. You won't get your account banned if you are in good standing with payments, appropriate behavior, etc. However, if they feel that you do not learn from the warnings they give, and that you blatantly disregard them, time and time again, then they have the right to review your actions and determine what happens to your account.

Take the warning as what it is, a warning that the GMs found your use of language inappropriate, and maybe modify your useage in future.

Incidentally, naming GMs publicly in regards their communications with you violates the forum rules (specifically #4)

It's okay to be black, but if I made a joke about black people, some people might take offense to that, right?

How is being gay any different?

My main question is would I get the same warning if I said "I'd like to thank God and the straights"?

Depends on who was listening, and which GM you got, and how they interpreted the rules.

But yes, this thread should not be here, and you should take it up with the community reps. This thread will do nothing to help you with the issue.

I don't think it is that NCSoft is saying it is okay to be offended by gays. I think they are seeing that someone thought that your statement was somehow meant TO BE offensive. Someone reported what you said to them because that person thought YOU were belittling either God or gays.

It is an on-going struggle in online communities. People being offended by statements that have nothing to do with them. People being offended 'on behalf' of a group they don't actually belong to. Watchdogs who blow their whistle at the first sign of perceived intolerance (or ironically... Bohemia).

I would not worry about it.

I don't think that's what anyone here is saying. There have been a number of possibilities mentioned that could explain why someone felt the comment was offensive and petitioned it. The measure of whether or not a comment is offensive is not whether or not you intended to be offensive, but whether someone was offended by it, at which point NCSoft needs to follow up.
