Alright, let's try this. What one word names are really popular with superheroes? So much so that they are "ALL" taken already. I know, animal names!

So... ALSO available on Freedom as of the time of this post, the following one word names:

  • Alpaca
  • Antelope
  • Codfish
  • Grouse
  • Opossum
  • Peafowl
  • Pronghorn
  • Reindeer
  • Seastar
And that's just the names available from the FIRST column. I could go on and on like this, but I hope I've made my point.

Celestial Highness
Lord of the Celestial
Celestial Vizier
Count Celestial
Lord d'Celestial

Celestial Lord [name]

Edited: Ooh, Seastar, that's a good one. Although it does call Aquaman to mind, but aren't they trying to make him more of a badass now? By adding powers or saying he has Super Strength, something.

Yeah, that would be odd.
The next thing you know, people will be naming their characters after lunch entrees.

Anyone else not getting this?

LOL.

"Alien"

Well let's see here... some real superhero names actually used by DC and Marvel for their characters:

  • Orca
  • Squid
  • Eel
  • Leech
  • Maggott
  • Worm
  • Bird-Brain
  • Porcupine Pete
  • Turtle Man
and it goes on and on....

Honestly, next to some of the names that they've actually USED... The Codfish sounds quite.... honorable and noble.

I'm going to make a Captain Codfish right now.

Well, I'm actually not, but still, it has a nice sound. Add a little blue to the Energy Blasts, maybe, it could work.

My POINT being, there are PLENTY of names out there to suit ANY "preference". And the people that are whining about the lack of names are simply...

Not. Creative.

It's that simple.

I asked him how early he made that toon, to get it with the correct spelling and no punctuation. He said he was in the original beta. THAT is what people are referring to.
The problem is that this isn't actually true, and I keep trying to tell people but no-one ever listens. I tried the names people are failing to get now back in 2004. To no-one's surprise, they were taken back then, too. The "good" names got snatched on day 1, and by May 2004, they were already gone. Veterans are in now way, shape or form more fortunate than new players. Certainly a select few people luckied out, but there weren't more names back in 2004 than there are now. Believe me, I've tried.

Good names are not getting fewer and fewer. Good names went as soon as the game opened its doors. OBSCURE names are what's getting fewer and fewer, but there are so gosh-dang many of those left they aren't running out any time soon. True, even some blindingly obvious names could have slipped through the cracks (I got "Bodyshop" a couple of weeks ago, much to my amazement), but what slipped through hasn't really decreased much since then.

Finding a good name now is no easier than it was back in 2004. The people who claim it is would have had just as much trouble back then. That much I can guarantee.

Having explained what they mean, I think they should take a hike. I think the name system is just fine and there are plenty of 'good' names still out there. I made a technology tanker, a guy in a suit of powered armor. I figured the name Alloy would be taken. Surprise! It was available.
And, yeah, the fortunate or creative can still stumble onto diamonds in the rough like that. There are lots of these obvious names that were apparently so obvious no-one expected them to be free

Ah, remember that's "Codfish", not "Codpiece"

Neither honorable, nor noble.

Make him a villian and take Mako's "Throw_Fish" Patron Pool?

I think this is the heart of the argument. I have no sympathy for people trying to name their character "Darkness" or "Doctor Lightning." Yes, I understand there's such a thing as a superhero name and that involves things like Superman and Batman. But even if you want to follow in their footsteps and be boring and uninspired, if there's already a Wombatman out there, why do you still want to be Wombatman?

Do you think you have more claim to the name than whoever has it? Do you not care that the name you selected for your superhero, to be identified and recognized by and known as, is already taken? Or do you just not care at all?

The naming system is only a problem with both of the following are true: 1) You come up with a name that's so generic, obvious, and predictable that someone already thought of it, and 2) you refuse to consider any alternatives because you feel as though you should have that name anyway.

One thing that has only been touched on with the idea of using special characters is using an apostraphe to indicate possesion. I use it every so often such as:
* Mind's Arrow
* Angel's Ghost
* Nature's Release

So thinking way back to the OP's thread I would have tried Celestial's Strike - which is available on Union on the EU servers. Not sure if it would be available on the US servers but RARELY see any characters that use an apostraphe in this way in their names.

And I whole heartidly agree with peoples suggestions about using other languages - Ive got a string of characters who use the Finnish word for bear, Karhu, because I really like the look/sound of it.

And to be honest Ive been a bit surprised to find a few names are available which I thought would be taken like:
* Psychic Whisper
* Miss Manic
* Tristar Phoenix

And sometimes get inspiration from other sources like 'Devil Divine' which is a lyric from a song.

Anyway thats my two inf on the subject!

If your mouse has greater processing power than your gfx card, the answer is yes.

Undercover Angel
Midnight Fantasy
Tackleberry
Moonshine
Golden Sword

There's been some pretty off the wall names I've tried to come up with before, and wound up smiling at the fact that someone out there is just as off the wall. Finders keepers, I say.
