Going Rogue's "Ultra Mode" and my PC. What do I need to shoot for?

As we are probably all aware, The new Going Rogue expansion will feature "Ultra Mode" a graphical update that will basically make CoH beautiful breathtaking, etc, etc.

However, as I was watching the Keynote Speech from HeroCon, I realized that, for the best performance on my system, I have to leave a few of the Advanced GFX options off. It is with that in mind that I would like to know what sort of system requirements I would need to see Ultra Mode at it's best.

Now, I'll be building a new system soon anyway, which is good, so I can price out exactly what sort of equipment I need to go for.

I do not know weather any of this was mentioned by a Dev, but I am considering asking a Developer through a PM if he could give me any info. There's a chance that may fall through, of course, so I am asking everyone, players and Dev's alike.

So Players, Dev's: What does my new system need for me to see all the wonderful new things GR will have, but still have the best performance possible?

Considering how far off release is, I'm not sure any of them know yet. Though I've seen talk that the current generation of ATI cards probably won't hack it.

Wasn't the game demo used at HeroCon run on an ATI card?

As I understand it, yes. But then, that's not the card that I have in my PC.

"Need?" Who cares about "need?" Ultra Mode demands this!

Ok, its ATI. Still, I think even BillZBubba would give ATI another go if he got his hands on this setup.

I was planning on grabbing an ATI card, simply because Vista and nVidia won't play nice with one another. Is this an unwise decision?

Unless you really have a need to get your new card or system during the holidays, I'd advise doing what I plan to do, save and wait until closer to release, when we've been given specifics. Things will only get cheaper.

Eh? I had some Nvidia/Vista issues, a quick search and a windows hotfix for Nvidia errors/conflict fixed it permanently, a year ago. Nvidia has never had an issue with the game itself, so I like using the cards for that reason. (Coh is about the only PC game I run nowadays.)

No, It's not an ASAP thing, but I am trying to get a rough price list as soon as I can.

EDIT: Which Hotfix are we talking about? Before switching back to XP, I resigned myself to having nVidia related Crashes if I ever ran CoH. Also, I had Vista 64 installed. Perhaps that was the problem.

I'm holding out for the nVidia Fermi (Geforce 300 series).

I mean, that ought to do it, I figure.

Yeah, I'm colorblind, and I talk about it a lot. Sorry.

Huh. Not sure about what hotfix #, but after searching the tech support forums here and googling some graphics vista crashes, I found a 32-bit Vista hotfix for some graphics instability.

Alternately, my gaming laptop has Vista 64 bit and a nVidia card in it, and has never crashed.

The trick with PC setups is that there are so many moving parts between diverging software/OS/hardware interactions, it's tough to say where real problems originate. So far, though, Vista has played nice with my nVidia cards. (Exluding the original fist week before my desktop got its hotfix.)

Right. Well, they were nVidia driver crashes, I know because of the info the BSOD gave me. Either way is irrelevant, I guess. I'm going to get the use out of Vista that I should be getting once I get my new system patched together. I just hope Posi answers my PM at all. . I'm sure he will, as he is a just and benevolent Dev

Now, if only he'll reply with a link to a page on Newegg where I can just buy the card...

Dare I? Dare I dream?

Just because the driver crashed, it doesn't necessarily mean it was a problem with the driver itself. It could have been the system, or a hardware problem as well. In this case, it was probably the system running the driver. Microsoft recognized a problem on their end and patched it with a hotfix. The hotfix was also included in SP1, so people upgraded to that version should not have to download any fixes.

If you still happen to have a spare drive to test it on.. it was probably just that simple.

I had SP1, I only abandoned Vista a few months ago. Being a PC tech, I tried all I could think of and just assumed it to be the nVidia card disagreeing with Vista. Haven't had any trouble since coming back to XP. At any rate, I may install it on my secondary drive for giggles and grins, see if I may be able to get it working.

But back to ATI cards, is something wrong with them? Do they not play well either?

There are a few specific Video options that people recommend to disable in combination with each other for various reasons. I'm not sure if any of them caused a crash, but the visual result is not always what you expect, so people live without some of the extras turned on.
Technical Issues & Bugs > Sticky: ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations

I never found it much of a problem on my old, old system, but that was run on lower quality anyway due to my hardware, so that was expected. The cursor problem (while using enhancement screen) was the most annoying issue, but I adapted to it.

For all we know, this might all change with the new engine anyway.. so in either case, I'm waiting before making my next upgrade anyway.

I'm assuming my system will be able to handle "ultra mode" -

I'm running a 2.0 GHz quad core system, 8 GB RAM, and Dual nVidia GeForce 9800GTX 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Video Cards in SLI Configuration.

Anyone know if this won't work?

Thanks!

Having a quad is almost irrelevant as far as CoH is concerned, and 2Ghz is rather on the low end of the scale these days as well.

As far as your other specs, they seem OK with the information we have so far... but things can still change any time. Release is still far off.

On a side note, doesn't CoH "hate" SLI.. or was that "fixed"?

Yes I know it's an old thread. I'm one of the last posters in it before Cerulean_Shadow dug it up.

Are we not allowed to answer people that dig up old threads? It'd be kinda rude to just leave him hangin'. lol

I'm not really sure what the mods position is.

the Necroed thread was actually aimed more at Cerulean, so I should have copied his post in, then put A:, then quoted yours and pointed to the current thread about Mutli-GPU support with the links to the hardware recommendation threads.

np, just making sure I didn't accidentally say something wrong.

As for your link, I already knew Multi-Core didn't so much for CoH (for single-instance performance), so I made sure to let him know. .. and I have seen your thread before, but since I've been taking a TLDR approach to GR threads (waiting until release is closer), I didn't really pay much attention to wat you might have said about the current side-effects of SLI, and just remember a lot of people having problems with it in the past, which prompted the question, just out of curiosity.

On a side note, I did have it bookmarked already for future reference when I might want to reference the information later. It looked very thorough.

Didn't realize it was "illegal" to respond to an old thread.

Nvidia GeForce 9800. If it can run DoW2 on highest settings, Im pretty damn sure it can cope with Ultra Mode

And scrap Vista, get Windows 7. Vista was junk.

... NVidia 9800 GT is your best bet. For AMD (ATI/Radeon), we don’t have enough of these cards at this price point to get you good data. This would be the minimum card for enabling all the features, only at reduced quality settings.
Depending what kind of 9800 you have (there are different types, and significantly different specs), you may or may not.
