Profanity, the "Filter" and, You
I agree with you although I feel that whining, ********, crying or complaining about it isn't going to change the way some people act and chat. This is afterall a game which is meant to go after teenagers who in my observations are not the most caring about this sort of thing. Now I will admit that point also applies to older people who can be just as ignorant and non caring as the next generation too.
Point being... I don't feel that this is a subject that will get you "flamed" unless some of those same ignorant people jump into the forums and decide to mock you or make fun of your stance. At that point it's truly not being flamed... merely being mocked by ignorant people.
Now I'm rambling.... LOL
EDIT: just noticed that one of my words got bleeped... it is a female dog that ends in "ing"

These people need to realize that "T" for teen means in the "City of" world as "Suggestive themes" (I figure this means the skin-tight outfits and such...) and "Violence". I don't see it saying "Strong Language" (which according to the ESRB means, "Explicit and/or frequent use of profanity" anywhere on the box. Do you? No. |

We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...
And just like I knew would happen, someone jumps in, neg reps me anonymously (or so they think) and trolls correcting my spelling and grammar.
"srs bsns. Also, "could of" doesn't mean anything. It's could *have*."
Are you freaking serious?
Remember flamers with your neg-rep comments. The Devs/Forum mods CAN see who sent them... even if we cannot.

As thats said, Yes I do swear. And yes I keep it to completely private channels and only with close friends that I know well. If I team with someone I don't know, my V-Chip implanted in my brain goes active. My issue here is, You should know about the "overbearing parent with a axe to grind" They tend to look over their kids shoulders from time to time, heck install remote monitoring software if they are real paranoid. Then they see someone swearing up a storm in broadcast... Welp, that kids net just got pulled. This kind of stuff does happen often as well (as its happened to me when I was in my teens) and I was without internet for a year. If your gonna play-fight and argue with your buddy, do it in team or tells, don't show the whole server just how bad your language can be by blasting it all over the global channels.
So your argument is, don't swear because you might get a kid in trouble? You'll forgive me if I laugh in your face but out of every single argument you could have made, that's just about the silliest.
I agree that endless spamming of any sort in global channels is inappropriate, but I really don't get where this is coming from. Very rarely do I see anything like what you're describing. If you have a grievance with a specific user you should file a petition against them.
P.S. To quote a neg-rep I once got (which...I oddly cannot find anymore, wtf?): "you are not the forum police"

And no, thats not my argument, my argument was already posted as the first post here. That however is whats known in certain circles as a "Example"
So stop nit-picking the RULES that were laid out upon that we agreed to before we even logged in for the first time, before we gladly handed out our credit card information to pay for our subscriptions.
Just like the person who has a sprint phone and blatantly doesn't pay his bill thinking his phone will keep going forever. Understanding your bill and your Service agreement keeps this from happening and keeps you from losing service.
Just like if you Swear in open chat, You ARE liable to end up getting banslapped (Losing your service) because you were not following the basic rules (Paying your bill & following the agreement) put before you when you signed up.
I swore up a storm on the forums at one of my wonderful fellow players who I found to be .... unlikeable due to their actions and words shall we say. On noticing the forum filter didn't catch several choice swears I used I contacted TheOcho about the forum filtering. His answer to my enquiry about whether those words would be added was essentially that although forum filtering is in place, that doesn't remove the users responsibility to moderate their own language. I'd say the same applies in-game.
So essentially I'm agreeing with you GL. Unfortuately the maturity level of net-users varies wildly and tends to the immature end of the spectrum due to assumed anonominity.

America: Land of the offended.
Be well, people of CoH.
Oh well, if you're talking about Freedom, that's another matter entirely. To be honest I actually had a sneaking suspicion that was the server in question. If it's really that bad, try another server? I tried making some new toons on Freedom when I ran out of Pinnacle slots but I just couldn't take the stupidity. It's kind of sad that the "drunk server" would actually have better behavior (or maybe everyone is just passed out).
But really, the whole problem I have with this thread though is that it supposes that the people you're complaining about would actually read it and/or care about it. (Ignoring the fact that the forum-going population is a mere fraction of the game's population as a whole.) Most of the folks you're describing are hormonal teenagers who just don't know any better (not excusing it or anything, just saying). Most people (especially teenagers) don't take well to lecturing. Frankly you come off as a little pompous in here. You certainly have a good point do make, I just don't think you've made it very well. Your language is just as inflammatory as the language you're decrying.

Honestly as well it should be America: Land of the .... hmmm...Offended is a good term... I think teenage-trash-talkers-who-wouldn't-on-their-life-say-that-kind-of-stuff-to-somebodies-face fits as well. XD
While I tend to agree with the sentiment expressed (and it applies to the whole world in my opinion) that doesn't change the rules.

A second time, I ask politely if they can tone it down and keep it to private channels |
Be well, people of CoH.
I agree. Rules are rules and when broken there can be consequences. However, someone that feels strongly about the colorful language other players might use will probably find that sending in petitions concerning said behavior so that the game mods can act accordingly will go much farther in curbing such behavior than starting a thread with one's heart on their sleeve sharing with us all one's righteous indignation at the potty mouths of others.

~~~~~ Precisely part of the problem. You know what kind of reaction you're going to get, therefore you are inciting further incident, which I view as harassing other players. Use petition, keep it to yourself, use gignore. |
And theres a reason why I put this in the "Player Help" section and not in any other section, its supposed to be a Help guide and was written out as such.
Not as a rant, not as some OMGTEHRSWEARINZ! thread but as a guide.
As I've said also, I'm not perfect with my own language, but on games with rules against it, forums with rules against it and my Job as well, I moderate myself like everybody else should and refrain from saying such things.
(when my computer crashes and I'm in my computer room at my house, thats a whole 'nother story...)
And again its the "Enough rope to hang themselves" analogy. If they don't get it the first time, I do file a petition and leave it at that. I don't use Gignore because like my original forum rules, "If you come back with a new polished attitude and behaviour, You should be ok to come back... However, we won't hold our breath on that one." (after a temp-ban)
First, I'm not one that uses swear words as punctuation (not on broadcast anyway). In particular, spamming the chat at all - with or without swearing - is despicable. However, I do feel very strongly about this subject.
Who do you think you are to regulate my speech? If you're offended by swear words, turn the filter on! (Also, you're a ********* *****.)
As for kids getting kicked off because their parents saw swear words on the screen? GOOD! If I wanted to play with little kids, I'd have bought Hello Kitty Adventure Island instead! And shouldn't they have had the filter on, anyway? Nevermind the fact that people discuss plenty of adult topics that won't be filtered but many - myself included - do find offensive. My solution? Turning off broadcast.
Further, the ESRB rating doesn't apply to me, you, or any other person. It applies only to the content of the game.
Again, I don't condone being a jackass over the public channels. But you don't need to swear to do that, and the occasional swear shouldn't give some overly sensitive **** cause.
There are two ways for a game to deal with objectionable public chat. Constant policing, or filtering. This game chose the poorer, less effective way. Now shut up and let the filter do its job.
I mean what? If a store has a sign that says "No Stealing" and you walk in and steal something, are you going to tell the clerk behind the counter, "If you don't like what I'm doing, look the other direction."? No, you are going to be busted for it.
And Bill, I respectfully disagree that the best way to "deal with it" is anonymously. Proper social behavior means being willing to respectfully and politely encourage others to behave properly. The legal system recognizes that the accused have a right to confront his or her accusers. Integrity means being willing to do the right thing even if there are consequences. (Interestingly, the Bible has a lot to say on this subject -- regardless of your religious position, the Bible has a lot of very good advice.) Anonymous reporting simply builds animosity and frustration in people who might take the properly presented comments and modify their behavior.
Some people will never get it. Some folks, if using profanity, will get angry at anyone, even a Dev, who asks them to tone it down. But a lot of people will take the comments for what they should be -- a simple request to encourage behavior consistent with mandated standards. If I ask someone in a tell to tone it down, and the person complies, then I won't send a petition, and everyone wins. If I ask a person to tone it down (always in a private tell), and the person becomes abusive, then I WILL send a petition -- but I know that I have given the person an opportunity to correct his behavior first, and that he/she fully deserves whatever consequences there might be.
Furthermore, it take some real literary skill to come up with alternative ways of saying things that would be really offensive or crude if using the standard terms. I like to encourage creativity. There is nothing wrong with making reference to certain terms if done so in a clever way. (Example: One person I teamed with shortly after I first logged into the game had a Defender named, "Saviour S.")
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)
you sound just like a buddy of mine lol I agree with pretty much all of this.
To the OP you don't mind kidnapping, robbing banks and doing down right evil stuff in a game but the second you see some swears you get offened? Americans i guess /shrugs
Let me ask something since this topic has popped up as a sore spot for some unknown reason to me. Why is this such a big issue as of late? What are there that many whinny preteens shouting with the speed of a pnumatic drill or something?
Granted i'm aware that this game is rated T for teen and that the ESRB does not rate the interactions of players durring online sessions (funny yet pointless isn't it?) but to go this far as to remind everyone about something that's pretty basic to me since when I do use "swear words" it often has a vindicated purpose. I just don't go throwing out F-bombs like it's going out of style...unless i'm really pissed off about something any my brain gets stuck in a thought loop.
The main thing about profanity filters that aggerivate me is when they block out normal words due to them having parts of "swear words" in them such as Saturday since if you remove S,A,A,Y you get another word that is considered a "swear word" yet it's not...it is a day of the week. Then again not many people of my generation are aware that Sat is the sabbath and not sunday.
What point was I trying to make again? Oh right the mentioning of the filter and "swear words." All in all in-game we do have a profanity filter that works mostly. If there was a way we the community could modify our own profanity filters this whole topic could become non-exsistent since if you or your parents don't like "swear words" (which by the wat should be used more as a seasoning rather than the main ingredient) then with the filter customization that can happen and you can activly ommit words that end up on the list that aren't "swear words."
(Note: I said "Continued") a stray word here and there can usually be overlooked (when directed at nobody in paticular) Continued usage of profanity and directed use of profanity, that will get you somewhere alright, sometimes a 3-7 day vacation from CoX depending.
but when someone decides to use every last 4-letter word in their limited vocabulary over and over again... thats when I get upset about it and ask politely for them to stop. If they don't, it's a petition and a global note (I don't do ignores. We only have a max of 50 globals we can ignore, and I'd rather leave that for the REAL bad people).
No offense but it sounds more like a personal crusade than a serious issue. Don't get me wrong I agree with most of what your saying. However what I don't agree with is the fact that your taking most "swearing" too personally and odds are more personally than most other players here in our community. Personally if someone is getting on my nerves I just /ignore the little tosser and remove him from my list after a few days if i care enough to do so.
If your saving your ignore list for "bad" people your going to be waiting for a day that may never come since the ignore list is for people who are pissin you off. I use it all the time since it's really simple. If someone is hitting your "prolong irritation, raise bloodpressure" that's when you left-click their name, select ignore, ???? , profit. When I use this method I often remove the name a few days later if I care enough to do so. Especially now since Paragon Studio implimented the e-mail disable option which saved me plenty of time.
Also as far as my bile flinging is concerned I know that most of my yelling gets filtered not just on the forums but in-game as well and I make no atempt to get around them since that is rather pointless at least to me anyway.
Now, before I start, I already know I'm going to get flamed, called a troll and a bunch of other things anonymously with neg-rep comments. I don't care.
Profanity, the "Filter" and, You.
First off I would like to say, Just because theres a filter available doesn't give you the right to use your "elite language skillz" in open chat.
Secondly the City of Heroes/Villains Rules of conduct that you agreed to upon paying your subscription, logging into the boards or, logging into the game clearly state under number "3" as the following,
"You may not use sexually explicit, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive language."
Number "1" states,
"While playing City of Villains, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players."
If someone asks you politely to stop using profanities over open chat where everybody and their mother can see (filter or not) then do so and respect the other players. It's supposed to be a friendly game with a friendly environment.
Just because your "Redside" does NOT give you free reign to do whatever you please. The difference in the rules from redside to blueside....
NONE.
So please, think before you spam the chat with about 5-10 "Suck my..." and ask yourself, "Can I get banned for this?"
Yes... Yes you can.
Granted I'm not a redname however I do have a tendency to read every legal document presented before me because I'd rather follow the rules and enjoy my game play than get banned for doing something stupid I could of avoided by simply reading a short document.
Now, as it says nothing about the profanity filter in the User Agreement I'm going to say something here that is personal opinion.
The profanity filter is not there so you can swear up a storm and tell whoever doesn't like it to turn it on so they don't have to deal with it. Personally they shouldn't have to deal with it in the first place.
Keep it to SG, Coalition, Team channels and, Tells. Keep it off of Broadcast, Local, Request and, any other global channels besides private ones so the general populace doesn't have to deal with guttertalk.
Now, I know your saying, "But you just stated a exception!" Only when it's not actively disrupting anybodies game play. If your entire S/VG swears like sailors, keep it in the S/VG channel. If someone you invited to your S/VG doesn't appreciate profanity, honestly they have a choice here and they should take it. Simply leave the S/VG. Same with Teams, just leave. Tells, global ignore. Coalition, Break it. However if it becomes extreme even after a polite request to "tone it down" (harassing tells, S/VG/Coalition Chat quickly becoming a quagmire of directed profanity, Teams becoming verbally abusive) Then by all means, write a petition, There is a "Harassment/Conduct" radio button there for a reason. Use it.
Global and Broadcast/Local channels should NEVER be subjected to your "Colorful" language as many people really don't want to see what new 4-letter word you just learned and watch you spam it across the channels where everybody can see it.
These people need to realize that "T" for teen means in the "City of" world as "Suggestive themes" (I figure this means the skin-tight outfits and such...) and "Violence". I don't see it saying "Strong Language" (which according to the ESRB means, "Explicit and/or frequent use of profanity" anywhere on the box. Do you? No.
The rules are not a "guideline" they are rules, they are meant to be followed.
Felt I should quote something from a recent movie in here, "Profanity is a vice. He who uses it, is no gentleman."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ways to Avoid the inevitable
Granted theres alot of people who don't read the rules (Including the inf farmers and inf spammers - Not speaking of the inf farmers who don't do it for profit)
and you will eventually see profanity(for some reason theres more of it in PvP zones than anywhere else... o.O).
But what if you don't want to see it? What if you don't want your kids to see it?
Well first answer is to not play the game. But that's not all that fun now is it?
The main option you do have is in the options under the general tab under the "Chat" heading. Enabling the profanity filter here will clean up quite a bit of the chat replacing it and keeping it from view. However this will not filter peoples creative typing skills to get around the filters.
If you have the filters off (because they annoy you like myself when they filter completely harmless words just because they have whats considered profanity in them) Remember you have the Petition tool.
If you are going to fill out a petition against someone for excessive profanity, Sometimes a tell to that person is enough to quell their outbursts but sometimes it will end up just stoking the fire causing more outbursts.
Basically if it gets beyond tolerable levels a good format for a petition is the following,
/petition character name - (reason for petition)
It's always a good thing to C&P the offending chat into the petition with a short reason why you are filing the petition. This will move the petition along quicker (or at least it should).
Remember always try to at least difuse the situation before sending in a petition.
I know some people don't care how much someone swears over open chat however the rules state and expressly forbid such use of language.
If your on a team and there is profanity being tossed left and right and it is bothering you, ask politely if they could stop. If they continue, that team isn't for you and the easiest way to handle it is by leaving the team.
Same with super/villain groups. Too much profanity, theres a quit button. Solves the issue quickly.
For all the people who have the knee-jerk reaction that want to tell me, "If you don't like it, quit yourself!" Yeah, I don't like the excessive profanity thrown about in open chat, but its the gameplay and the good players that keep me coming back. The pros far outweigh the cons.
So above all try to enjoy the game because in the end, thats what it is. A game. Nothing more.
(For the person who gave me neg rep citing, "useless non-guide is useless" perhaps you haven't noticed that it has been modified a bit to make it a bit more guide like. If you have suggestions you can do it better than making some backhanded comment in my rep window.)
