Constant maintenances

This game must be the most maintenance intensive game I ever played.

My problem is I can play mostly in the morning and alm,ost never on the weekends. I can't play this game. One morning out of two is wasted. I played CoH a few years ago and came back to it recently, but I remember now it was also a major source of inconvenience for my particular shcedule at the time. I got worse, much worse.

I'm no expert, but WoW was not like that, Tabula Rasa was not like that, Guild Wars is not like that.

Thursday 8th, Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th (I do not know about Monday, I assumed it was on regular maintenance, so I planned something else). And the week before double XP, it was patch time over additional maintenance.

They tell you maintenance is comming, normally the day before in the afternoon. I can't plan anything with so short a notice.

I'm so disappointed, I like the game, but I'm kept out of it most of my personal time.

I need to find some new game to play, but it is absolutely not what I want to do. I'm sad, I just love my toons.

I see nothing to do but endure or move, great. Maybe I'm missing something, but multiple maintenance a week on live server does not seem professional to me? Once a week, quite fine. Take your time. Twice a week? Oh well, the game is good so go ahead. Three or four times a week? Well... that's a lot of maintenances... does not look right to me.

I suspect very difficult architecture because the alternative would be that they don't give a damn and I do not think it's the case. I mean, they certainly don't give a damn about me personnaly, but I like to beleive they are prisonner of the architecture of the game database or something like that.

I might never know, anyway it does not change anything. I would just prefer to be able to play, if I had a choice.

Of course I'm a kind of newbie and I can hardly beleive it's the first time someone express the same view as I do, so I expect the beating I'll receive in the following posts. I was unable to create a new tread elsewhere. I know it's futile, but I want to do 'something' instead of loading a new game on my hard drive. Push back the inevitable.

Have a great day, playing just a little bit latter, somethign I would very much like to do.

Same here, I normaly play a lot around the time the maintenances are done ...

But it's just necesary evil. Cause it's what is needed to keep the game running and giving us new stuff to play with from time to time ...

So sure it can be a pain , but it is worth it

Ps: there's always testserver

It's at most two hours a day. Generally twice a week, but hardly ever more than three times. Quit complaining, it's not that bad.

I've heard EVE has maintenance every day.

I remember playing WoW, which had the same if not more maintenance.

It is a necessary evil. They need to apply patches to fix bugs. They need to clear the cache and whatever else they do during routine maintenance. If you don't have those times, the game never changes and then breaks entirely.

Actually, WoW's maintenance is pretty much all day Tuesdays.

I understand if this is not good from a central perspective, but I would appreciate if the west coast and east coast servers did not have maintenance at the same time, so there are always servers that are up

Over the three-day Double Exp weekend, I had a few instances of the "mission door is underneath the Founders Falls AE Building bug," including one that made a Task Force impossible to complete. We wound up quitting the TF and lost several people when we re-formed.

It's frustrating to have to quit a TF for technical reasons and it's somewwhat more frustrating to waste a lot of time on 2xp weekend.

Today's maintenance should patch that bug. It's an extra day of maintenance, but (I assume) that's because they're uploading the new patches (this one and this one, if I understand correctly.)

Aside from keeping the hamsters fit and trim, maintenance periods can introduce vital patches.

Sorry about the impact to your available playtime.

Patches don't typically come during normal maintenance, so it's on another day.
There was no maintenance on Monday. The announced extension of DXP weekend led me to believe there wasn't going to be one (because there wasn't one Friday either), and there wasn't. Bad luck to you for doing something else that day.

New issues have been released and bugs/features have been fixed, but as you noted, there were specific reasons for it, and it's not part of the typical schedule.

Not for nothing, but the servers are down for less than 4 hours total every week, and only 2 or 3 more hours if there happens to be a patch day as well... which is less time than WoW goes down for a single day anyway. It's certainly better than the servers going offline in the middle of the night at the drop of a hat.

If that's all the spare time you have, and Maintenance is cutting into so much of it, then yes, I'd be looking for something else to do as well... but you have to look at the bigger picture...

I do feel your pain, believe me. When my work schedule was different (5am-11am), there was almost no point even having a day off from work, because by the time I woke up, the servers would be just going offline, and by the time the servers came back online, I would have been just coming home from work anyway. (I couldn't play just before maintenance cause I slept in on my days off. 5am isn't a fun schedule! lol)

As far as not planning something on short notice.. do you mean TFs? Why don't you plan for the game to be up and put a clause (If there is a patch update, we'll start at X time instead). Nobody can fault you for the whole game going offline.

But anyway, I dealt with it and realized there were other things I could do with that time. Laundry and other cleaning, or grocery shopping is stuff you have to do anyway, so why not get it done during maintenance? Then you wont have to stop playing to get it done later on anyway.

Now, I'm lucky enough to have a different work schedule (12pm-9pm), so I simply stay up late after work and play all I want, then go to sleep during the morning hours when the server is normally down for maintenance. I can't tell the difference anymore. The server is always up by the time I wake up. lol

I dunno. I subscribe to the Announcement forum and am alerted to any changes in the schedule. You're right, they tell you late the night before, but at least they tell us now. We had to fight to get that message we never got before. We're still trying to get them to MOTD it once in a while as well so non-forum goers can see it too, but that's the way it is for now.

I hope you don't decide to quit a game just because of a couple hours of maintenance. There has to be ways around it and lots of other time for you to play, and if there is no way for you to play at other times, then I wish you luck whatever you decide.

Normally, and we're talking the norm, what happens all the time, the servers are down 2.4% of the time in the space of a week for maintenance.

This week, the week of a patch update, which happens, normally, about once a month, the down time is 5% of the week.

Next week, it will go back to 2.4%.

So... let's cut out all this talk of "Zomg! why is it *ALWAYS* down!!!!!11!111???"

Other MMOs do indeed have as much, if not more downtime than CoH. So, let's not say things which are demonstrably untrue.

Well, there's you're problem. Maintenance and patching must be done. And thus, a time must be picked for it to be done. And so, the time that is picked is when there is the least amount of people playing. For people like you who play in the morning (in the US) or for people on the other side of the globe, this maintenance period is their prime play time, and that's unfortunate. But it's a choice they must make: inconvenience 5% of the player base or 80% of the player base. It's really a no-brainer.

Paragon Studios does care about the inconvenience of the downtime and they try to minimize it's impact as much as possible. This past weekend the usually Friday and Monday maintenance was changed to Thursday and Tuesday so that it wouldn't interfere with Double Experience Weekend, or the Monday holiday (US). And they gave those who can't play weekends, like you, two weekdays for 2XP.

Hate to ask, but did you try contacting a gm?

If you just came back, as I did, you've got the i16 change. Then there was a redownload the next day for something. Then they needed to put power visuals back in PvP. Then there was 2x weekend.

They'll have to fix the AE door bug. Lots of other stuff will get upgraded and installed prior to the Halloween stuff.

I'm cool with it. I give them props for always having the green dot on my servers. Only on 2x weekend did I see Freedom get to 2 yellow dots. Liberty is always green.

Yeah, he popped into the second attempt at the TF about an hour or two later. He was very polite, but of course we no longer needed the help. I'm not too worked up about it, they have to have been crazy busy considering the reactivated players and the 2x exp madness.

Actually, if the test went fine (I know some people are hoping for another tweak or two) for the Halloween event, today's patch is the last one before the event, if I am not mistaken.

1) The increased number of maintenances lately is to fix stuff from recent upgrades to the game (i.e. Issue 16).

2) Maintenance downtime is LESS than it used to be in the past.

3) According to Ghost Falcon, they will be trying out a new maintenance schedule with even less downtime.

Seems to me like the overall maintenance situation has improved and continues to get better.

Then you should be pleased to know that twice a week (Mon & Fri) are the norm. Maintenance is scheduled for 2 hours, but I find 1-1.5 hours is typical. I am also a morning person, and would have preferred a different maintenance schedule, but at the same time I haven't found it to be too much of an issue to adapt. I hope you can too.

If it seems like the maintenance is excessive, that's probably simply because it happens to coincide with your playing schedule. Many players rarely if ever even notice the maintenance down time. They probably think "wow, this game has hardly any maintenance at all!"

Yeah, didn't they used to have a maint window every morning? They didn't always use it, but ISTR the rule used to be something like "0700 to 0900 Eastern, don't make any plans."

Yep, that's what it was.

Oh that sucks. I haven't had a GM take that long in a long while.

It's a strange phenomenon, being "old" in the context of Internet game time. I think about it every now and then - it's not something previous generations had to deal with. I mean, you didn't see 19th-century chess masters sitting around saying, "I remember when knights could move three squares forward and two to the right. Some players quit over the Great Knight Nerf."

Well due to 2xp/reactivation weekend Fri/Mon maintenance went to Thur/Tue. And because of the Monday Holiday in the US, patch day Tuesday got bumped to Wednesday.

Next week starts maintenance Thursday instead of the usual Friday/Monday schedule. But that still doesn't preclude servers down due to patching or server calamities.

Indeed, there was maintenance Monday through Friday from 9AM to 11 AM Eastern, back in the day. It is my perception that as soon as it was possible to reduce that time, the schedule was cut back.
