Should I shut my Psi hole?

With double XP weekend here and my often neglected for fun tank sitting there staring at me pityfully, Ive decided that this is the time so that I may finnally say in 4 years of playing that yes I have a tank. The only question comes down to power order on some powers and should I use IO's to cover Invulnerabilitys Psi hole, or just leave it open and ignore the hot knife thru butter that would be psi?

You can deal with Psi in a number of ways. First, get +HP and regen bonuses so that you can shrug off anything short of a full alpha attack. Perma DP also helps. There's an accolade and a vanguard temp power that help you against psi damage. Inspirations also work.

However, for those rare times when all your foes are psi-based, you want something better. I remember taking my invuln through a mother mayhem mission set for 8... NOT fun. I had to get my Mind/Kin/Psi controller to help the group finish the map =(

Here's my current build: it has pretty good psi defense and resist. Not GREAT, but enough for me to not be afraid of psi-wielding opponents. With regen and recharge bonuses, I can stay alive through just about anything. Weave and Combat Jumping take my psi defense to about 24%. Granted, only being halfway to the defense softcap is almost as bad as having no defense at all, but every little bit helps, I say.

The only problem is that i have the Rule of 5 broken in a few places, so I want to purple out so i can get some more bonuses that i don't already have too many of.

Eh I pun and I thought it would catch folks attention while being very apt to the question at hand

Emperer that build of yours is in the billions of inf category, I like to keep it in the under 30 million. I might, just might be able to get all the impervium psi resist ones and crushing isnt that hard to get but all the rest is way way to much money for just a goof/semi serious tank

The reason I chose not to go for Psi def or resists with my Invul tanks is that to get a meaningful amount of either, you really have to dedicate your build to that and not much else.

An alternative way to approach it is try to increase the the overall amount of defense in your build, especially to S/L. Then you only have to worry about pure Psi attacks, which aren't that common. And as a side benefit of building for typed defense bonuses, you'll also increase your positional defense, which will help against most Psi attacks.

Of course, to do that, you'd probably want to pick up Tough and Weave, which would require that you drop 3 powers from your current build. Painful, yes, but if you're on a tight budget it's a lot less expensive than trying to increase the defense (including Psi defense) in your build just using IO bonuses.

A couple of other notes:

I strongly recommend that you drop the End/Rchg slot from your Reactive Armor sets. You don't need them for slotting, and the bonus you get from them is pitiful. Just putting a second slot in CJ or SJ and slotting two BotZ will get you a much better bonus.

Unstoppable is way overslotted--you only need a SOs worth of resistance enhancement to cap all your resists. Slotting recharge is also a good idea if you plan on using it fairly often. If you are primarily using it as an IO mule, put the RA set in one of the resist passives instead.

I also suggest that you look at one of the DM guides either here or in the scrapper or brute forums. I haven't played it much myself, but I think most veteran DM players would suggest that you should take both Shadow Maul and Dark Consumption.

You won't be able to close the Psi vulnerability with only 30m influence. The biggest Psi def/res bonuses are 6th piece bonuses in purple sets.

Even if you could afford it, I wouldn't say it worth it since you can achieve so much more with a softcapped defense build or a perma-Dull Pain one.

If concept allows, you can use the Vanguard Psi shield temp power (200 V-merits, 30 minutes duration) which gives +15% psi defense. Slotted Weave + CJ + a Steadfast unique is already ~13% Psi defense, so there's your Psi hole plugged.

Ive found with toying around with invul in the planner and you have to give up a couple powers out of your secondary so that your overall resists arent slimmed to nothing, and its either comsumption and maul or touch and something else more vital. Heres my revised build. Found that I can get to at least 26% psi resists which isnt bad...not steller but at least doable without really breaking the bank. Also noticed that I have enough merits to at least buy a low level numina reg+rec.

I agree with this... besides many times your psi baddies can be pulled to a corner or melee range switching them to an easier form of damage to mitigate.

A poster above stated the best way to cover it already. Go for +Recharge. Making Dull Pain perma should really help, and in most cases, it should get you over it. You could go for some +Regen as well (Which will be more noticeable with Perma-DP), but +Defense is expensive, and +Resistance is usually not worth it. Going for Recharge both helps your offense and defense, as well, which is especially noticeable with Dark Melee's ST chain. And a dead opponent won't be hurting you with Psi. =P

I'm in a similar position with my Ice Tank, it's very effective against most damage types but useless when facing psi.

As most psi is typed ranged I'm slotting Makos and other sets with ranged defence - without gimping the build I'll be able to get about 35% ranged def which should help alot.

As they're not purps it isn't that expensive either.

Thought I might chime in here and post my build. I did my best to plug my Psi hole in order to make my Invul tank as survivable as possible. I was able to get 26.5%(27% in practice) Psi Def, while keeping S/L defense capped at all times, and all other types of DEF capped when 8 foes are in range (most of the time for me). This build also gives me 26.8% Psi resistance to keep it on par with my other non-S/L resistances. Just something to give you some ideas. The only thing is, this build is with SS, so your experience may differ.

P.S. Not a cheap build either.

I spent about 3/4 of a billion inf once to get the best psi res/def on an inv/em tank once. Completely not worth it. You'd be much better of getting good recharge, and getting near perma DP. Also, popping Orange and Purple pills is a LOT cheaper.

Building that guy out, and not seeing much difference in general play between it and just level 50 Generic IOs, is why I sell most of my IOs when I get them.

Bottom line: Not enough Psi enemies, and way to costly to mess with it. Roll a WP tank if you want Psi res/def.

Just a quick note on the "not many psi enemies in the game" comments, while I agree that the number of them in the game is significantly low there are some in high level content that can make you wish you had it. If you ever run any of the shard TF's the Wisp's have Psi damage (I am not certain if they are paired with any S/L, I would have to check) and Carnies. I will admit that these are some very specific situations. It just depends on what you like to do.

Aw crud, i posted the build with the purples. Didn't mean to do that. Just replace the purples with whatever set has psi mitigation and that'll give you my current working build. It sure as heck didnt cost billions of inf as-is now.
