What should the Devs do about Wentworth's?

I was listening in on the chatter last night on JFA2010 about how the devs are thinking of adding a cut scene to access wentworth's in order to give WW time to get up.

Personally I think this is not a good solution. Aside from the fact that that in this day and age we expect immediate gratification, and without saying just "fix it" what suggestions can you give that may be able give WW time to load up.

If the devs added something while we wait it would be nice. Like the top 5/10 prices paid... for anything..
But what do you think?

Interesting. I hadn't heard that one. Funny thing about WW access times.....on my 5 year old desktop, it takes forever and a day to connect to WW. But on my 6 month old laptop, that has four times the system resources of my desktop, WW opens instantaneously, in all zones.

I want to see a popup that says "you have an old computer....get ready to wait!"

Should probably have an option to turn off market icons.

61866 - A Series of Unfortunate Kidnappings - More than a coincidence?
2260 - The Burning of Hearts - A green-eyed monster holds the match.
379248 - The Spider Without Fangs - NEW - Some lessons learned (more or less.)

I still think WW should be a "no powers" zone. Like what the devs do in Pocket D, when there's a gajillion people all crowding around them, screaming for yellow titles....

Put a few more police drones around. Institute a no-powers zone. Problem solved.

it loads quite rapidly for me. I think the people who were saying there was going to be a cutscene were being silly.

Probably the best way to load it quickly for people having issues would be to load the items incremently, as they clicked on each drop down menu, or did a search.

What about having an item index stored locally on a user's machine? It's not like new items are being added to the game on a constant basis. Maybe some kind of system that would cross-reference the items that a user has with the items in WW?

Like some kind of database...I don't want to suggest a flat-file database, cause that's just too much....I dunno....but then, I don't know how much that kind of index would increase a user's CoH folder

Yeah, I don't think anyone saying that was being serious.

WW/BM load times are completely dependent on the resources your system can throw at the game. I frequently run two copies of CoH on one machine, and the 2nd one is more slow and CPU bound because of they way the 1st instance locks in the video hardware acceleration. I often have a several second lock up on that 2nd instance if I visit the market, while I never have a problem with just one instance.

Mostly, the way the game loads the data or populates that screen (not sure which) seems to be the place they could most readily make improvements. It seems the client stops and does nothing else while that operation is taking place, which means people with slow or heavily loaded systems can actually time out when clicking the NPCs. It really should be better interleaved with other operations, like, oh, continuing the network interaction with the game server.

There was a seemingly similar problem a while back with people's contact lists - when you opened it your game choked while the list of contacts (which used to not be tabbed) was populated. The devs changed how it worked so it renders only a limited number of things at a time until the whole list is done. It causes a brief annoying screen blinking behavior when I open the list on my system, but at least it doesn't lock up my game. Maybe the market could be given a similar workover.

I would place this firmly in the rumor, or pulling your leg department, unless there is a link to any red name mentioning it.

Chyll it is just chatter. No known Dev said he was doing i, but I have been DC'ed more than once by trying to access WW.

I agree that the cut scene was just normal Justice silliness.

But to answer your second question on how to improve performance, I think that the Market interface should open blank, wait for you to input a search or conduct a transaction, and then load the necessary information and graphics.

Overheard @ hami raid

[Broadcast] Rumor Mill: i heard that they are gonna put a cutscreen on every time you access WW/BM

zomg its troo!

I actually think the database idea, combined with fleas idea of nothing coming up when you first open it would increase the speed exponentially. I only have problems with WW/BM on some days. Most of the time it is fine to me, but then again my machine is well equipped to handle it. The times i do have problems is when the whole server is having problmes or around double xp weekend when everyone is accessing it.

I think they should just make WWs/BM accessible in the SG/VG basses. Think of all the lag you get just because you have 3 dark miasmas with shadow fall on right next to you. I realize that not everyone is in a SG but even if you're not there will be less people at the main shops because the one in the base would be so much nicer.

While I'd LOVE to be able to access WW/BM from my base, I would be equally happy if they'd make it a no power zone. I've been begging for that since it launched.

I've heard equally reasonable arguments for and against having Wentworths/Black Market be a power-suppressed area, but I'm in the "leave it how it is" camp for a few reasons:

* Power suppression means I slow to a crawl whenever I get into the market. Since I just want to get in there, do my market business, and get out, I want to be able to move quickly when I'm doing so.
* The Black Markets are often outdoors in open areas. In Cap and Sharkhead especially, there are often times where NPCs will wander into the market zone (and sometimes will be killed by the auto-kill-zone surrounding it) but I've seen on multiple occasions lowbies dying because someone pulled Deathsurge or Scrapyard to a location just outside of the kill zone but within the range of their attacks. Suppressed powers would simply make that sort of occurrence more dangerous.
* I realize that not everyone's got a high-end system to run with: I have both a bare minimum and a high-end system so I know how both camps feel regarding things that can cause graphics lag. The issue of graphics-intensive animations being played in the market area (such as a Stormie unloading all their powers at once) can be somewhat avoided by choosing a less-populated market to do your business at (even on my high-end rig I'll often go to the St. Martial or Sharkhead BMs because it's quieter).

I also agree that the market UI needs an overhaul, much like they did with the badge and contact lists. The "try to load everything when you open the interface" idea isn't a good one and it's probably the issue causing older systems to choke. As others have suggested, the market shouldn't load any data until you input a search parameter or narrow down items via the nested list on the left of the interface. It'd also be awesome if when you had a recipe selected, an additional panel popped out showing the salvage you needed for that recipe and allowing you to place bids from that panel, instead of having to individually search for salvage you need.

I generally don't have too much problem - seems to be slower when more people are on.
I would like to see power suppression though - I generally turn my powers off as I hit the door anyway. If need be, put more/better drones around them to ensure nothing gets griefed in.
A database idea might work as well.
PLEASE - no more cut screens! I really hate them.

My good computer sometimes chokes a little, but I blame that on the OS being stupid.
Usualy it comes right up.

My other computer would be threatening to kill me in my sleep for what I am doing to it, but it is too busy trying to figure out how to fit the game, the OS, and everything else into less than 512mb of memory.

I was acutaly all for the power suppression area inside WW until they actualy implemented one inside of the AE buildings and I discovered just how painful it was to suddenly no longer even have sprint.

I was never for power suppression, and the power suppression areas in the AE cemented my opposition to it.

I have a great system. That's not the problem. The problem is that it annoys the hell out of me, especially Quills and Fire shields. And I do tend to use less populated BMs, such as the one is Sharkhead (which I prefer to Cap anyway), but the Talos WW is so convenient that I find myself rarely going anywhere else hero side.

I will GLADLY give up my Sprint to not have to be around Quills while I'm working.

I don't like power suppression because I don't like having to retoggle everything. I usually don't stay in the market long enough for other peoples' powers to bother me. And I really don't think that other players' powers are the source of the lag. I never see more than 10 or so people there at any one time, and not all of them are running graphic intensive powers.

Well, they did change Quills so the animation goes away after a while...

Only time I ever have problems with WW/BM is during double xp weekend on Freedom Server.

I have one problem with the power suppression idea. My portable workbench. I commonly get all my salvage and use WW to store salvage as I make IO's and then transfer it to WW from my enhancement screen.

If they power suppress it and supress the workbench then I'll be mightily PO'ed since all that time and money to get hte bench would be for virtually nothing.

Right. Figured as much, as it sounded like JFA.

On the other hand, I would *hate* a cut scene. so horrible idea.

The only DC connection to WW/BM I have had was on one character that a bid out on a piece of salvage that was removed. That got fixed. Other than that, it doesn't seem any worse than it has ever been.

Am I missing something?
