Uuhg...I just started a new character. Somebody PL me to level 22

I hate my new brute. His defenses are weak, his attacks are few, his endurance is low, he has no travel power, he is so annoying to play. I keep on having to stop and rest...terrible.

And I've no cheese to go with my whine!

Seriously, though. I wonder if the whole leveling thing is essential to a successful MMORPG. I'd rather just start at 50.

Teaming works wonders

Funny, my new Corruptor is a blast to play. I kick loads of ***, and while teaming yesterday in a duo I'd constantly out survive the higher level brute that'd wipe on most spawns (which'd I'd continue to solo, finishing them off by the time he got back from the hospital ).

This game would be incredibly boring if you started at 50. I'd have long since quit.

It takes like 4 hours to solo a brute to 22. What's the problem?

Yes, I hated my claws/ea brute until 22. Now I just dislike her.

Be well, people of CoH.

His defenses may be weak, but so are the enemies. The attacks may be few(?, at level two, my Brutes have four attacks, and by level 6, they have five or six), but the enemies don't have a lot of HP.

I've noticed that with the changes to the End Cost of Brawl and the Origin "Temp" powers, I've been able to fight a lot more enemies before I need to rest.

Travel power is usually taken care of by level 7 (I usually ding 7 during my first Mayhem Mission).

My experience does not match your experience.

But if you listen closely, the world's tiniest violin is playing in time with the sound of your sobs.

I think I would get bored faster without the leveling and variety of content found at lower levels (why would you even fight street gangs and mobsters if you didn't have to level up through them first?). Bored faster means lower retention and faster churn.

New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)

Hint.....the OP is a joke.(This to those who seemed serious.)

To the 50 thing, I did it when they were testing recluse's victory. I had no attachment to the character, compared to those I spent playing over two years on to get to 50. Leveling may not be ALL there is to this game, but it's a big part of what keeps people here for hours, and years, keeping this business afoot.

This brings up something I often think about..

Why would someone play a character that sucks at low levels? Is its high-level play seriously THAT MUCH more fun than a character isn't a painful exercise in self-hatred to get up there? Why would anyone want to subject themselves to a build that you hate for half the time that you play it?

Good question why do people play /stone brutes or stone/ tanks?

I made a stone/stone tank because I wanted to check out the AT. It's okay, but it does take some toggle flipping and/or tele-tanking.
No worries! It's part of the fun of playing a different kind of character.

At the same time, I'd rather play my way to 50 than to be power leveled. There really isn't that much more to do at level 50 than there is a level one. In fact the lower level characters have more to do unless you include the Ourboros and then you won't get to use all of your level 50 powers sometimes anyway.

I enjoy the progress of getting to 50. When I complete the "challenge" of leveling, I get rewarded with becoming more powerful.

I understand that some players want the "insta-50" button, but it bypasses most of the game. Making the game life-shorter for some players. The game is here to support long-term players.

Do you really think that the DEVs should put aside work to help long term players from having more enjoyment in order to appease the "flash in the pan" player that just wants to have a bunch of 50's so that they can say they "won" the game?

I like City of Heroes. I don't want to see an insta-50 button installed in the game.

Because they hate it when someone gets fun in their games.

I really like the idea of how the Stone Armor set plays, if you removed Granite and the unnecessary self-slows from it.

Because it's not half the time. Getting to 25-30 on some characters is maybe 40-50 hours for me. I'll spend another 100 hours on the run to 50 and then play many more hours if I enjoy the character. So for me it is at worst 1/3 the time.

With brutes and scrappers I hate the pre-stamina, pre-fully slotted shields because they are weak but once I get them into the 20s I have a rolling good time and the horrible past is quickly forgotten unless I make another one..

With warshades once I get them into the mid 30s I have a rolling good time and the horrible past is quickly forgotten unless I make another one.

Controllers and dominators once I get them their pets I am having fun.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

Then again, I generally enjoy all my characters long before those levels... often having the best time in the 1-20 game!
Same here! Although I have 5 characters now between 37 and 50, I rolled a Peacebringer and an illusion/storms controller two weeks ago and I'm having a lot of fun playing both of them, now at 15 and 17. I've already spiffed them up with some generic IO's, a few frankenslots, and the illusionist now with a full set of Entropic Chaos! (And that last set pretty much says it all in terms of fun play style for him.)

I'm still relatively new at the game (about six months now) and I still have a lot more archetypes and power set groups I'd like to try out, even at the lower level. It's actually refreshing for a change to play a simpler (though no less effective at their level) character.

I've never deleted a character because I wasn't having fun. I guess that means I've never NOT had fun on a character, no matter the AT and powers.

Although I guess I do have a very recent counter example: Saturday I finally deleted my Sonic/Kinetics Corruptor, which had made it to 39 (would have easily been 50 with how often people wanted me on their teams!). I like the concept of Sonic, but I simply don't like it at all! I finally decided to delete it, so I could reroll (same name, but MUCH better costume ) as an Archery/Kinetics Corruptor, since it seems like I'd actually have an offensive set this time! (I'd always attack, but it seemed like I was only really attacking to apply the -res debuff!)

But as a counter-counter example, I have about 10 characters that are 38-47, all of which I barely play... despite being so close to 50.

The funny part is that I posted that image for him a while back, in regards to his reputation farming... and we went out and found one of his own. lol

Here's my smaller version:

1. Choose to love, don't give in to hate.

2. Brutes kill before they can be killed.

3. Put Brawl on auto.

4. With 'begginer's luck' and fury, don't slot for ACC or DAM, slot for End Redux.

5. At level 1, go to Grandville and buy a Jet Pack.

Limburger is the appropriate choice here.

Most Brutes can be pretty disheartening in their teens (like most teenagers really). Like in real life you have to avoid killing them off in their teens and tell yourself that once they hit 20 or 22 they'll become worthwhile individuals

My Stone/Fire Brute was a nightmare to level in his teens. Even fully slotted out with Accuracy & End Reduction it was a real struggle (hurrah for Security Guards and pre-nerf Manic Slammers otherwise I'd never have made it). Now he's actually pretty fun.

Of course like an idiot he's now in mid-30s limbo while I do the painful adolesence run with my Claws/Elec (with the new diff settings it's a bit easier thanks to spamming her AOE and chomping Insps like smarties to keep her running).

Because the "half you the time you play it" isn't a fact, it's a subjective opinion. I play my level 50 characters far more often than I play anything I'm leveling up. I run task forces every weekend and sometimes on weeknights and I nearly always bring a 50 because then I don't need to worry about what level the TF gives XP for. My Dark/Dark Brute was no fun to solo and kinda fun to team with until she got SOs and Stamina. (This was long before IOs were added to the game.) She was lots more fun after that and I still play her.

Levels 1-22 aren't "Half the time you play" for any of my characters. Levels 1-22 are barely a memory and whatever happened then was absolutely worth getting through to make it to the higher levels and have even more fun.
