5th Column/council war

Hello all!

Not had much chance to play since issue 16 was lauch but was doing an citadel TF tonight and went to IP to kill some council members and saw the 5th column about killing the council.

I went to check on Boomtown and saw loads of fights between the council and 5th Column happening. It looked pretty cool!

Missed the original war between these two faction cause the game wasnt release in the EU at the time but it nice to see it happening again. Looks like the 5th column are winning alot of the fights also

Have a feeling we might see a new 5th column central boomtown in a future issue!

Wonder also if we will see some kind of massive war happening in striga, also some new changes to the TFs would be pretty cool.

Sorry if this is old news but I thought it was a cool feature when i saw it tonight.

One thing that i've learnt during my time here is that no matter what we think is going to happen content wise, we are ALWAYS way off the scent

When the 5th come back in full force, i 100% think that their main base will NOT be in boomtown but instead take over another partial used zone. Unless a striga revamp is awesome then i personally dont want them to touch there as i love that zone as it currently stands.

If on the otherhand they created some kind of base just off talos island in the top half of that map . . . . . . well then we are getting somewhere

Edit: Just think about it, theres all that water/islands up there unused, they MUST have something planned for it or at least considered it. Would be my personal placement of a 5th base anyway. Within reach of everything that they need!

Portal Corp
Striga/council base
The "heart of our city" as the new spawns say . . . .

One of the text bubbles the 5th use during the fights with the Council is mocking Striga as a base, and saying that they have thier own secret base right in the heart of the city

I found out why; they're ganking them. All the Column are 1 or 2 levels higher than the Council they fight.

Picking on them like bullies in a playground. How very evil!

Or maybe it's an accurate display of just HOW much more badass the Column are than the Council?

Would be a good excuse to reuse that rather nifty submarine base map in Fautline. Reskinned, of course.

Exactly They'ld kill so many birds with one stone by doing it too!

5th column base? check
Actually using the massive space of water in talos? check
Possible underwater zone? check
Fit in with the story? Check

I'ld personally prefer it to be some kind of level 30+ missions though, going through the contacts/arcs between level 15 - 30 and there are actually quite a large variety! Though the realist in me kind of figures that it'ld be 15 - 50 again.

How about a story arc like the Midnighters one, that opens up an undersea domed base crawling with Fifth Column and Coralax? That'd give you a mini-zone sort of like the Roman one, with the possibility of missions outside the dome, actually in the water...

They have the tech to do it... We've all seen that map where you can actually go underwater for a bit.

Don't get TOO excited. It's just a pool in one of the Cimerorororororora cave maps... They did it as an experiment, a proof of concept. IIRC, one of the new devs at the time worked it out in a quiet afternoon, almost by accident.

Cimerora.
The Cim tunnels, where there are bridges over water... dive in and go under the bridge.

Potentially, that's just a bug where the 'water height' was set below the actual level of the water. You can't change your height/depth at all, so it's really not much different from normal water.

... if we get an underwater zone, it'd probably put everyone in the zone under a group fly effect (with a different animation), and disable access to normal travel powers. At least, that'd be the easiest way to pull off 'underwater' (of course, the animation team'd have to make a ton of animations, and the powers team would need to find some way to keep swimming from crippling powers that only work in contact with the ground...)

It's not a bug. it was posted about by the Devs at the time.. It's intentional and a test of swimming.

Couldnt they just have the swimming animation as it is now? While fighting underwater it could just be the same as flight where you temp stop the swimming animation to fire off your attacks. Some of the moves might look a tad . . . . . stupid . . . . but it'ld be a small sacrifice imo.
Then again, would it be such a big deal if travelling underwater had zero combat and was used just to gain access to the zone?

If they did make an underwater zone.. What would Fire using characters do?

They also seem to outnumber them, sometimes up to 2 to 1.

Weird. I thought that the 5th were removed shortly after the EU launch. I seem to recall their presence post EU launch as one of the things used to debunk the idea that they were removed for the EU release. Perhaps it was their presence on the EU test server(s).

They were removed from the game before the EU launch went live, before the EU beta too. We EU only players had never seen them until Orobouros was introduced.

It was more that people in the EU (like me!) were able to play the US version from launch onwards, Fifth and all. So if there had been any legal issue with the Fifth Column (which there wasn't, as we all know) it would have come up then, not at the official EU release.

Really? I guess my memory is bad, I thought they were in the beta at a minimum. So, were you in the beta? Did it have Striga and stuff in it, or was it like, Issue 2 with Council instead of 5th?

No, I'm remembering statements about them being in the EU version of the game, either beta or live. Obviously these statements were either false, or I'm falsely remembering them. However, I would not have confused EU people playing the US version with this, because I have had a native German, playing on my US server from Germany, in my SG since October of 2004.

Yeah, the idea that there actually was a legal issue with the 5th is false. It's also constantly used as a strawman, so it grates on me every time it comes up.

Yup, I was in the beta and nope. It was Issue 3 but without the Council/5th battles.

I know, I was trying to point out why the alleged debunking actually wasn't, since all it did was refute something that was already known not to be the case.

Cool, thanks for the info. I think the NA folks did get the battles on the test server during that time. I have screenshots of my Tanker taking on what looked like 40 Council and 5th, when people were complaining about how nerfed Invuln was when perma-unstoppable was removed.

Well, it might not be, the statements may have been false (I don't think they were made by Europeans). It's not like people never make false statements on the forums!

I only wish the boards had never needed purging, I'd like to go back and read some of those old threads. There were some people who claimed the 5th would never return, and therefore it made perfect sense to not name them in-game (hence the "group that the Council recently subsumed" and such vague references) because it would simply confuse newbies (which is ridiculous, why would they be confused by game-history? The Mu weren't confusing prior to CoV, nor was Vanguard prior to I10, etc.)
