Fire/Dark and ranged defense
45% is easy to acheive and you don't have to dip into the fighting pool for it and you don't have to make any big sacrifices.
So 45% is my recommendation. I've played a blaster, kin, fire/cold and ice/dark all with softcapped ranged defense 45-47% and the difference is tremendous. The only purple insps I have on me are those that happen to drop. Otherwise I carry oranges and greens.

with slotted darkest night you should be able to get way with slightly less defence

Could you possibly toss out a sample build that's at the ranged cap? I'm currently playing with a fire/dark in Mid's, and even _with_ the fighting pool, I'm only at 31.6% ranged so far. I assume you meant without purple sets, since you said it was easy to achieve, so I can only assume I'm missing some sets in non-blast powers that carry good ranged defense bonuses.

If you're only getting 31% then something's wrong. I'd be interested in seeing your build. And no purples needed, they don't offer +ranged defense.
I can typically do the +ranged defense side of things for 150 mil.

tbh though I don't like a lot of the choices you made. I'd take all the pacing of the turtle out of tarpatch and make sure w/e you do it has max recharge. Take those extra slots and enhance the defense value of shadow fall. Ideally you can pretty much max out def and res on that aura and get the end cost down to something reasonable.
I'd pull those numi's out of twighlight, you need it to hit first off so it needs some acc. If you were rad/dark you might be able to get away with skimping on acc in it, but even then. Find 3 more slots for aim and complete the Guassian set.
Find 1 more slot for webcocoon and put 2 pieces of basilik in there.
Basing it on the powers you have chosen and the expensive IO's you have slotted I'd do something more like this: (I'd do it differently if it were my build, but like I said based on what you have shown). Personally I'd sacrifice Posi in Rain of Fire to make sure I get a lot more rech in it.

Go with 45% defense, it's definitely worth it. Things won't always be within range of your debuffs nor will they last forever, not to mention than reapplying debuffs interrupts your attack chain and consumes more end.
You'll also get around 38% defense to E/N as a 'bonus'
Why would you need to cap defense on a /Dark? Explain your playstyle to us so we can find out what you're doing that's causing you to take damage.
Thanks Frosticus, appreciate the assist. I would be interested seeing how you'd put a build together, I'm not tied to my build that closely, I just started my Fire/Dark and was just messing around with Mids.
I'd say 30% is definitely enough. I'm playing a Dark/Rad Defender tankmage who is at mid 20s Def to all positions and I can wade into melee with little worry.

You can add a little more defense by forgoing the Speed/Endurance in Flight (I would personally go CJ/SJ but just my preference) and putting another slot in either Tough or Shadow Fall. With that slot pop in Gladiator's Armor +3Def (All).
This will put all of your defenses above 20% and S/L at 42%.
Another option it gives you is to drop Web Cacoon in place of Hasten without sacrificing a Soft Capped Ranged Def.
Fraulein Sieg, my fire/dark, is an ex-5th Column superwoman wielding hellfire and darkness. As part of her concept, she has to be really tough, so I'm taking the Fighting pool and her IO build will include a large amount of ranged defense.
What I can't decide is how much ranged defense to get:
...45%? But this would require very heavy concessions from other build goals, as well as render all the ToHitDebuff in /Dark redundant;
...39%? Accounting for AV debuff resistance, softcapped against an even-con AV with both Fearsome Stare and Darkest Night applied. Not that I plan to solo AVs, but it's something to consider;
...33%? Softcapped with either one small purple inspiration, or one application of either Fearsome Stare/Darkest Night against a +4 enemy. Even without either of those, it's still enough to defuse the alpha from most spawns;
...Some other number? Is there something I'm missing? Is my math horribly wrong? Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
