Servers going down question
It will stay around as long as it stays around.
The best answer one can give when it comes to MMORPG's.
Hellgate London and Tabula Rasa come to mind who didn't say around forever.
As long as it stays profitable will they keep supporting it.
As long as it is profitable, the servers will remain active (they may eventually be consolidated at some point in the distant future).
With the fruits of the investment by NCsoft really only just coming online, there is little reason to think that this game will be anything but healthy in another 5 years time.
We had the 5th anniversary this year, I see no reason why I wont be here and playing at the 10th.

Yeah. With a boxed expansion on the way and healthy player numbers still, I think CoH is in no danger of closing up any time soon.
EQ is still going. There's no reason why CoH shouldn't at LEAST last as long
Dooooooooom!
Only reason I can see CoH shutting down within 5 years with what's coming is if the devs get REALLY drunk, and accidentally wipe everything. All their backups, their version control system, the character database, the source on all their machines, etc!
That'd be hard to explain to management

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

My scrapper doesn't need an AoE. She IS an AoE.
Ultima Online has been running for 12 years this month, and still has over 100k subscribers. I could easily see CoH lasting at least that long.

indefinitely
I believe the statistic is that any MMO that has ever hit 100K subscribers is still active.
At it's steepest decline of subscribers, the downward slope was so shallow, that it would take at least seven years for the numbers to dwindle enough that they'd shut the whole thing down.
NCSoft is investing gobs of money (and CoH is currently profitable) to try to grow the subscriber base. A retail box is coming soon and that almost always boosts numbers.

How long will City of Heroes be here for until the servers are shut down? I mean, if the game is constantly updated and remains popular, it could be here for another 10 years, right? Or even longer, I guess.
What's your opinions?
