Sever status page - never accurate - also SERIOUS SERVER LAG

Always says servers are up when they aren't etc unlike the American version:
http://cityofheroes.com/news/server_status
What is with this, will it ever be fixed?

Also why are the EU servers so laggy compared to the American ones even for people connecting across several thousand miles of ocean? The past few months there has been LOTS of lag seemingly at random times and sometimes making the game completely unplayable for a few minutes ... yet it's been going on and on and nothing's been done. I know it's not me because when it happens I always ask to see if other people always have the same...

If this is true, why do I get hardly any lag?

Posted

it's not constant, it's at certain seemingly random times and most of server seems to be affected, I always check to make sure it's not just me

Posted

I've been getting it inconsistently too.

It's not necessarily the servers at fault, it's the infrastructure in Europe, especially centered around the datacentre where the servers are hosted.

Really, they need to relocate the servers to a datacentre with a better local infrastructure. Would do wonders for everyone's connection, but nooooo.... Put it somewhere that offers the bandwidth they need for a low low price! Right.

Sometimes it's as bad as the lag on EU launch week, and THAT was so bad they gave us all a few days free play time because of it!

I haven't been getting bad lag lately, but I did notice quite a few people complaining about it on Sal's Badgehunters.

Yeah, I've been getting quite bad lag recently. Sometimes everything is OK, but sometimes it really gets awful. Powers not refreshing correctly, enemies "teleporting" around, etc.

And its not just me - my teammates always report the same issues when I'm having them.

My theory is something wrong (hardware or software-wise) with the euro-servers, but nobody bothers to fix them as the player base is so low.

(And while we're on the subject of lag, when are they going to fix the infamous "Lag Canyon" on ITF? It's especially fun to hit Nova in there - the whole game grinds to a halt for a good while, sometimes even dropping players offline! Now THAT'S a powerful blast!)

Just to contribute data, north of England, little to no noticable lag on EU servers for weeks now. Conclusion: this is the fault of the Internet as much as/more than the servers, specially since my connection is, well, not the best available, shall we say. It was particularly dreadful last night. One new thing that seems to occur lots these days is a kind of pre- mapserver dc. This is where none of my toons powers activated but am still able to move around. All this means however is while I move well out of range of a mob, their melee attacks still hit even if they're on a different level to me. Most annoying as I had to defeat Dominatrix again as it occured during Maria Jenkins arc.
I am under no illusions that this issue will ever be dealt with, but I'm d**ned if anyone tries to say that there can't be any infrastructure problems because nobody ever complains.

All we can really do is petition it every time it happens. Even though they just make just jump through the same old hoops, and in the end, nothing ever actually happens to fix it. They just blame our PC or internet connection.

And i´m getting horrible lag randomly, like tonight i was on a team beating up scrappy and after that everytihing stated teleporting around. Yet some times i can move about in GV without any lag.

ITF´s have gotten worse since i12 and if there are too many in the same zone theres major lag.

Yet the us servers seems to be able to cope with 4 atlas parks but no its our PC´s ad connections.

Dont know if this is related to server lag or not but here it goes.

I can visit WW at any one time during game play and the screen loads up within a few seconds. However if i zone somewhere and then visit WW again without logging off, the chance of "lost connection to server" message pops up forcing me to relog is VERY high, think like 99 times out of 100 it happens.

I'll quite often get a little vertical line appearing in my AH slots when trying to drop things in there.. When that happens, I'll have to put it back in my tray and try again as it won't accept it... I guess, lagged off the AH server.

I have that happening aswell, since somewhere in July. Never had it before that.

I've had that happen before but thats usually quickly solved in the cases i've experienced, by that i mean it doesnt force me to log off to fix the problem.

And there is lot of DC also - sometimes half of the team just disconnect or lose connection to mapserver in the same time.

Wonder will they ever fix ITF lag since everybody is having it in the same spot always?

This is so in need of fixing.. any way possible. For me it is one of the reasons why I am for transporting the EU servers to the US. Just give us a legal agreement for NC SOFT to transfer our data.

I was talking to an ingame-friend about this and he mentioned a similar thing done in another game, I have edited it to provide what I think is an interesting parallel how things are handled here and elsewhere:

http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=687

Quote:
For the better part of 2009, we here at NCsoft have been formulating new strategies to address the issue that all persistent services on the Internet ultimately face, i.e. the data persisted in our systems has meaning to people and everything that has meaning has value. Frankly speaking this has been something that we have been strategizing about since 2004. Even though we have throughout the years kept the Real Money Trading element at bay with manual actions from our game masters, we have always realized that this is a bigger issue that needs to be addressed with innovation and thoughtfulness.

So our solution is based on two vectors; managing the demand for inf and addressing the supply of "illegal inf." Now it's time to talk about the "Unholy Rage." The name might sound dramatic to you, but it is representative of the sentiment that many here at NCsoft feel towards the RMT element which we feel is exploiting our game (in the original French meaning of the word). We feel violated, but we still understand that we must address this in the manner of the FDIC [Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, an independent agency created by the U.S. Congress to maintain stability and public confidence in the nation's financial system] not the SWAT.

Based on our new strategy and methodological process, NCsoft was finally prepared for a major offensive against the Real Money Trading (RMT) element in City Of X. Codenamed "Unholy Rage," the operation was launched on June 22nd and is still ongoing. Previously, we had done some test runs to tune our systems, notably with the launch of Issue 14 in early March when we banned around 3,000 RMT type accounts. A lot of wisdom was gained from the tests we had done, and planning and preparations for another large-scale FDIC style action went full steam ahead.

In the weeks and months building up to June 22nd we monitored and analyzed activity of inf sellers, and in particular, their supporting groups of macro-wentworth/black marketers, Peregrine and Grandville mission farmers, AE farmers and other RMT related units. The information obtained by this research was then used to identify further RMT type accounts and to prepare lists to process in the action. The preparations also included identifying various items of interest that we wanted to monitor and measure, such as market activity, server performance, petition trends and so on, as our intent was to examine the effects of the action in a scientific way and in as much detail as possible. Finally, a lot of work was put into gathering information on and collecting lists of RMT type accounts to be targeted in the operation.

During scheduled downtime on June 22nd a little over 6200 paying accounts were banned in one go.

Here's what happened:

The effects were immediate and dramatic. First and foremost, we saw a massive drop in the load on our server. I'd like to draw your attention to this:

Now, that is a beautiful graph if I ever saw one. Check out that purple line representing average CPU Per User. This clearly shows the very disproportionate load the RMT type accounts imposed on our system. While the number of accounts banned in the opening phase of the operation constituted around 2% of the total active registered accounts, the CPU per user usage was cut by a good 30%. That is a whole lot of CPU for the rest of you to play with, people.

Load issues for certain city zones that were hubs for RMT activity have also dramatically altered. Anyone who has travelled to Atlas in the past can testify that this particular zone was well clogged up with goldfarmers running missions pretty much 23/7 mixed in with the "regular" farmers. Here's a little graph showing the population in Atlas before and after June 22nd.

Clearly, the state of Atlas has improved so dramatically that one can hardly recognize it as the same zone. The same is true for many other zones previously chock full of AE and mission farmers.
I just got an email from character "<censored because of silly forum rules>" to my character Mistress Lilit on villains

They are hidden from searches so I don't know if they are on heroes or villains but I suspect villains as I have seen goldfarmers coming in and out of the AE portal in St Martial (they only move one at a time to spend tickets reset the map etc, never respond to any communication even when you say GOLDFARMER they just stay totally silent!) - the ones on villains seem to be slightly less blatant as they are all on total /hide mode, I tried sending tells to globals to ask them why they are doing it but total silence

This time - I have reported this same company before with "<censored because of silly forum rules>" - it was from "<censored because of silly forum rules>"

contents of the email:

"HELLO HERO/VILLAIN! I'M SORRY TO BOTHER YOU. NEED SOME COH/COV INF? PELASE COME TO <CENSORED>.
WE PROVIDE INFLUENCE, INFAMY AND POWERLEVELING SERVICE.POWERLEVELING <CENSORED>. UP TO YOUR DESIRED LEVEL.<CENSORED>WE ARE EXPECTING YOU !"

Other people in my SG have complained about these emails so I suspect it's being sent to every villain online

When I reported this company before it was on one of my heroes so it seems the same company is just as active on villains as heroes. Again anyone can see this is going on for themselves at the AE places it's sad that NCsoft does not seem to think fit to allocate GMs to actually deal with the problem instead of turning a blind eye to the ones actually goldfarming and not just the throwaway accounts created to send emails...

[Union Chat]deathkitten: they use st martial cos its quiet they are all on total /hide
[Union Chat]StormSurvivor: Yeah, I've seen 'em loads, as St Martial's the branch I use too.

I have forwarded this thread onto NCsoft support and looking to see if we get any kind of official response on both issues!

I have also asked them this:

I am sure these are goldfarmers, they do not respond to any communication, even when you outright say they are goldfarmers, they stay totally silent on hide mode and are AE farming seemingly 24/7. i am sure if you followed the money/inf trail you would find these large amounts of inf are being transferred to other players in exchange for real-life money. If you want to stop the spam you need to deal with the root of the problem in a pro-active way not just react to individual throwaway spam accounts that cost them practically no money or time to set up.

I have got some for you just in case you are not researching in-game yourselves (it's sad that it's always just an automated reply and then seemingly nothing done in-game - I have been talking to a lot of people about this and it would be nice to know if you were seriously looking at taking action rather than just blocking the throwaway accounts) it's hard to tell- they are definitely still very much around:

Goldfarmer 1 @ St Martial (8 accounts):
@globals censored because of the "naming and shaming" forum rules, names that sound like they were made from an "american name" random generator

Goldfarmer 2 @ St Martial (7 accounts? May have missed one, not sure):
@globals censored because of the "naming and shaming" forum rules, mostly korean/chinese sounding names

I have attached two demo files, one of each operator (I found the program on Paragonwiki.com VERY useful for playing them back http://home.roadrunner.com/~dasloth/...DemoLaunch.htm ) and one screenshot of each operator, but this is by no means all of them, I wouldn't be surprised if there are ones in Grandville still (because of the drops) or other AEs - I know there are similar ones on heroes in Peregrine Island portal corp and AEs.
(I cannot post these or links to them on the forum because of the naming and shaming forum rules sadly, if you want them PM me and I can send you a demo, as well as the global names)

Villains:
(click the image, then click the new image that loads again to view the full size)
-

Heroes:
- -
(btw, my tank was 50, I only joined to try get a screenshot of them admitting it, but well, the silence tells it all really :/)

It would be really great if NCsoft actually took action because a lot of people are getting disillusioned about this (I have been talking to a lot of people in-game!), for every polite helpful and friendly GM it seems like there must be a lot of smothering soulless bureaucracy from NCsoft HQ stopping you from actually dealing with problems like this - rather than the more hands-on approach the developers of that other game take to actually deal with problems instead of turning a blind eye and leaving the GMs to clear up the symptoms rather than the disease.

(note, I can tell the difference between some newbie desperate for XP and a goldfarmer don't worry, I am seriously not exaggerating or anything here, they are ALWAYS going in and out of the AE portal in St Martial on Union, they only move one at a time to spend tickets reset the map etc, never respond to any communication even when you say GOLDFARMER they just stay totally silent, and are on total /hide mode. The only way to know they are active is to go to the AE yourself and see them. No SG, no badge title, pretty obviously "throwaway" accounts, oh and lots of black market badges...)

Unfortunately DK unless we have 100% proof that they are indeed goldfarmers then there is really nothing to be done. The person could claim to be mass farming for their own needs and we'ld have no evidence to prove otherwise [though we all know really].

Not even sure if its possible to "trick" them into goldfarming for you and use that as a case, highly doubt we're allowed to do that though. I know i heard you ingame mentioning about the market prices but how else do you see them affecting the game if you dont mind me asking?

check their badges, black market badges -.-

And yeah I thought about that, but they all want cash up front so no good there - meaning you'd actually be breaking the rules yourself :/

On my tank there it was a blind invite, I guess it was mostly for a filler, or the costume (lol)

And yeah, but the devs and GMs have the means together to *GET* 100% proof (e.g. some kind of flag when very large amounts of money are transferred so a GM can investigate, watch them doing the money transfers etc - I'm sure there's plenty of other ways to catch them in the act) they just don't seem to have been given/allowed the go-ahead and/or means to do it.
