CoH vs. HL2?

No, you want some real Half Life comparisons to CoH? Go to the Shadow Shard. Looks a lot like the alien world you go to in the first Half Life.

To be fair, the "floating islands" concept isn't that novel in itself. Tomb Raider 2 used that as one of its last stages, and though it used a matte black sky (such were things at the time), the concept was very much similar, and the look wasn't that far off.

Point here.

Both HL2 and CoH came out in the same year.

However the Council did not exist when CoH was released. The Council came in with I3, along with all the Kheldians and that entire approach to it.

So the winner here is HL2.

The end.

The Council are basically a 5th Column revamp (better level progression) and they were in since the start.

I found the Combine a fairly original concept meself.

Some people in this thread need to read more good old sci-fi books.

Not quite true.

The whole 'alien' aspect of the Council only came with I3 and then Strigia. Before that Warwolves were linked to the Seed of Darkness. Hell, before than half the mobs were Dark Miasma and Dark Melee based before Warshades crept in.

The 5th Column were there since the start - a generic Nazi themed group with super science and super soldiers.

I3 basically retconned them into being the Council - this caused huge outcry. Anyone who remembers Axis America will remember this. They suddenly became 'Council Empire'. Now I can understand the mobs and arcs etc. retconning...but an entire dimension? Come on.

The alien aspect IIRC came in with Strigia and the Kheldian backstory.

If you think about it, Wolfenstein ripped off the Council big time!

...Heck, we could go far, far back.

The whole idea of Nazi Super-Science really wasn't new to begin with.

But the real question is...

Why are Council such a joke of a group when compared to Combine?

What are you talking about? Combine get taken down by a guy with a FREAKING CROWBAR! Council face people with super powers and super technology!

He simply doesn't have enough time to get a PhD because he's too busy saving the world.

And he's entirely neurotic and stupid. The fact that he doesn't talk just hides that well.

A man with a crowbar and a PHD in theoretical physics. Don't sell Gordon short, please.

Yes, because that degree in theoretical physics helps him to swing that crowbar like an EXPERT!

Dunno about all of you, but I only saw Dr Freeman use the crowbar on boxes, and maybe a couple of dudes/headcrabs at the beginning. For other applications, it progressed from pistols to shotguns to the super gravity gun. Well, okay, he did use physics a couple of times, where "physics" means "use crane to throw shipping containers and laugh at resulting ragdolling" or "nail dude to wall with awesome crossbow". FOR SCIENCE!

As with EVERY FPS I've EVER PLAYED, which includes Bioshock, Left4Dead, HL2, Doom, Duke Nukem.... the whole game basically comes down to this:

Rush enemy, shotgun at point blank range to the face. Reload, NEXT!

No. That's the style of a rank amateur. I should know, because that was my (very successful) style in Counter Strike.

The real style is to use the least appropriate weapon possible. Got a large, open field between you and the target? Melee weapon. In a tight, room right next to them? Scoped sniper rifle, maximum zoom. Trying to sneak through a highly secured installation? Shove a flashbang in their pants.

Soylent Green is People, people!

PEOPLE!

Did you ever notice that people is one of those words that, if you look at it for a little while, it looks like gibberish?

I'd say about half the english language qualifies for that. Take 'size' for instance... it has a freaking Z in it! "si" "ze"... NONESENSE! It looks like some sick parody. Or, how about 'queue'? Redundant letters galore! And what about 'galore'? Monkeyshine? Aardvark? Every single other word in this post?

The Nictus have always been part of the 5th Column. Requiem has always been stated to have gotten his powers from fusion with a Nictus in his info. The warwolves were never explicitly stated to be linked to Nictus, but they were heavily implied to be in the Path of the Dark arc (that sounds ridiculous said out loud) and by the fact that the alternate Requiem's world in To Save a Thousand Worlds is populated solely by "Werewolves".

To Save a Thousand Worlds still has the coolest name ever, even though the arc is a complete nightmare to play through due to it's insane length and huge outdoor maps.

That sure helped in Black Mesa.
