New player Q: I am level 7 and have skipped all missions. Do I have to do them to unlock content?

Hello everyone.

I am a new player, and after trying out a couple of different builds, find that I can gain early level exp MUCH faster simply by smashing everything in site out on the streets. Now I am level 7, and have not done a single mission yet. If I want to unlock brokers and other quest givers, do I have to go back and follow quest lines from my first contacts, or is there some other way to 'hop on board' the storyline?

Am I going to wind up missing out on valuable rewards for skipping so many quests?

Thank you for any help!

If you're redside, head to Port Oakes and go to your broker to get a newspaper. Start doing them, then after a bank heist they'll introduce you to a new contact.

Blueside, head to Kings Row and meet up with your detective to get a police scanner. Same thing. Blueside though your contacts introduce you to other contacts, so you don't have to keep going back.

Both the broker and detective should be the icon on your nav menu when you first enter the zone.

You are totally awesome, thanks oodles. I assume that I can find the broker just by looking at the map.

Alternately, talk to your initial contact. They'll usually have an option to send you on to the next contact in the chain (if you're of appropriate level) or a different contact of appropriate level if you're higher level than the next contact in the chain.

Note that this works better in heroes than villains, as villains must start over with each island and work their way into the graces of each separate island's contacts. (By completing newspaper and mayhem missions.)

Yeah. The broker will be a contact icon on the map. Alternatively, there's a broker/detective tab in your contacts window which should help you find the person you're supposed to be talking to.

At level 25, you can gain access to a special zone that will let you replay any story arcs you've already completed, or may have leveled past.

Some individual missions aren't available this way (Mayhem and Safeguard missions, most notably), but most content is. This matters more villain side, where the Mayhem Exploration Badges are needed for an accolade (a minor bonus power for completing a specific set of badges), but even if you level past them, it's fairly easy to find people who are running through them in any given level range who will let you join up.

Hello and welcome!

You may want to do a contact's missions if only to unlock inspirations from them.
Go to Kings Row and see the Detective/Go to Port Oakes and see the Broker. Run a few newspapers then the Safeguard/Mayhem! These will give you a jetpack for moving around, with one hour and thirty minute's worth of fuel!

After you've done this, you will get contacts with story arcs.

There are unlockable contacts in the game. Striga Isle, a Council stronghold, will eventually unlock Lars (or is it Tobias, damned kids never got off my lawn ) to get Ernesto Hess, a great Task Force!

Notable unlockable contacts villainside are Doc Buzzsaw (Bling badge for Influence) and Viridian (Tracer badge for Tsoo Sorcerers, Tank Buster for Freakshow Tanks, 200 Council, 200 Crey, Infiltrator for Paragon Protectors and...sure I'm forgetting a group here).

To cut to the sweet of it, some content is unlockable, Paragon Wiki (www.paragonwiki.org) will tell you all about that stuff.

You can use the Ouroboros system once you are level 25, both to move around more quickly AND to 'flashback' content you have missed! Doing so is also a good way to earn Reward Merits and some badges.

Just a quick fyi:

If you're planning to talk to the detective/broker and do radio/paper missions, before introducing you to your first contact they'll want you to do a "bank mission" which blueside will have you stopping a villain from robbing a bank or on the redside will have you robbing the bank.

Basics: Don't run to the banks and skip everything in between. Take your time going to the bank and kill any ambushes on your way there. Everything else is gravy.

There are other tips and tricks, so if you do end up running a bank mission and want more advice or help or even someone to run with you, don't hesitate to send me a PM.

That is absolutely horrible advice for a Safeguard mission. Blueside you want to go straight to the bank and stop the villain from robbing it and getting away.

Redside, however, is a different beast. Race to the bank, and you may find yourself with more Longbow than you know what to do with. Take your time destroying stuff so you can build up the timer. When I do Mayhems like this I usually end up with half an hour left on the clock before I even approach the bank.

I'm pretty sure the villain doesn't spawn until the player enters the general vicinity of the bank, at which point 'The Bank Is Being Robbed" warning flashes across the screen. If, in fact, my memory serves me correctly, it's not at all harmful to leisurely make one's way to the bank during a Safeguard. Only when the warning message is flashed must one make haste.

Q. Just wondering Posi, where are the new dance emotes we were told would come with GR?
A. Positron: Whoops, my bad.

You must enter a certain radius of the bank, *OR* five minutes have passed since loading into the mission, whichever is first.

This.

In fact. If you can get a key before you reach the bank or start the timer on the bankrobbers, you can finish a side mission. I've done that plenty of times.

DarkGob is also wrong about redside mayhems. In the early levels (such as the OP's level 7), if you "take time" to try to destroy cars which at that level are purple, you will be wasting time and the bonus for destroying the cars won't be equal to as much time as you waste trying to destroy them.

This is why I mentioned ambushes as opposed to objects. If it's your first safeguard/mayhem, you're not going to be concerned with anything other than completing the objective. This isn't the time to start learning Safeguard/Mayhem mechanics unless you're with someone who's done them before and can lead you along.

Semi-agree. In Atlas Park and Kings Row Mayhem mission, I don't bother trying to destroy anything that is Purple named, like cars an vans, other stuff, go to town. Especially if you are solo, you can add minutes pretty quickly and if you can come across the Key Mob before you get to the bank, even better, adds more time to your clock.

I have seen various posts about going to ParagonWiki, in my opinion, this website: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Main_Page, is better.

Huh. I've generally gone straight to the bank, gotten the villain, and then had plenty of time left to wander around and find keys/stop vandals/etc. /shrug

That's for Hero-side (safeguard).

Villie-side (mayhem) is somewhat reversed .

paragonwiki.com and wiki.cohtitan.com are the same website, like cityofheroes.com and cityofvillains.com are the same website.
