Well I have just finished of my Cold/Dark defender and I have got the urge to make another one.

So I have turned to Defender community to Critique my build and give me advice on the sets. All help is greatly appreciated.

NEVER skip Tar Patch. It's a great -res and slow tool, you'll see everything just dies way faster inside one.

Also, Howl is a good power to take early. It's another 20% resist for your team, and is a cone.

I'd also slot fearsome stare with acc tohit defuff sets.

Since you went for ranged defense, I made up a build that gives you 36% ranged def and more recharge (although it's kinda expensive) and gave you knockback protection. Also gave you some endredux in your first two blasts, feel free to swap any power you prefer in the build (you coul swap Shout with H. Twilight for example, I like HT after 22 because you only start getting great benefit out of it after SOs):

Thanks for all the help you have given me and forgot about the knockback proc was meaning to put that in there some where.

I'm not a fan of shout. The activation time is as long as reactivating your first two blasts, which stacks an additional 20% -res than just a single shout. Also, petrifying gaze is cool and all, but screech will mag3 stun instead of hold (same difference mostly), but will add some damage and a long 20% -res and is a great attack to keep chaining among your other single target blasts to add with tar patch to make your team melt any boss, EB, AV, whatever.

Siren's song is not necessary. You have to get too close, and it's a sleep, while fearsome stare is a super-strong fear and -acc that you can activate in cone range of howl. Tar Patch + fearsome stare + howl chaining on a spawn while chaining the first tier attacks on the boss(es) will allow your team to destroy an entire spawn in seconds while taking minimal damage.

I respec'd out of siren's song. I thought it would be cool to have a back-up AE control ability, but with enough recharge/hasten, your AE fear is out often enough to keep using. Plus it has a chance to hit Mag-4.

Also, the AE rez is has a fear/stun component as well, which you can stack on top of fearsome stare for mag4+ fear and stack on screech for mag5 stun on a boss.

I love dark/sonic and I think it has tremendous control, damage potential, healing and debuffing ability, and you get a nice blob pet. The synergy between the stun chaining, -res chaining, and having the capability of rendering mobs useless (-acc, fear, slow) while simultaneously reducing their ability to withstand damage while doing a fair bit of damage yourself with a high amount of survivability is awesome.

I definitely second that screech is a far better choice than pet gaze!

Also, siren song is less useful in this build. It doesn't give -res; meanwhile Fearsom Stare gives the fear which works on most things and the debuff which ALWAYS works, even if they aren't feared. Take this power ASAP.

My only other comment based on the second posted build, wait on howl... that is a lot of aggro in the early levels. Shift everything to get stamina at 20, shadowfall at 22. At 24/26 take howl and howling twilight. You could swap Howling twi and shout if you prefer more control to direct damage early on. Then Amplify at 28, maneuvers at 30, Dark servant, then screech then tactics... I think you will like that build better - strong all around, good control, good debuffage, and keeps you end use manageable.

I generally agree with your advice except for this one. Tar patch + the stacking -res from howl is one of the key features of a dark/sonic build. I'd take howl as soon as it was available. Solo, the aggro from 3-6 mobs won't kill you...you can always fire off a heal or use one of your other controls to mitigate any incoming damage. Teamed, you can rely on teammates to alpha strike -OR- use a combination of fearsome stare/darkest night to diminish accuracy -OR- just be a little careful about when you fire off the attack.

I think shout is the attack you can put off, not howl. Considering the additive -res you can do with that and tar patch, you want this power sooner not later.

On my Dark/Sonic I went with the Dark APP. For theme and for OG. I currently have 46% Range Defense and keep OG toggled to help deal with any critters that get to close. OG coupled with Screech can even keep that boss stunned indefinitely if I so choose.

I too took Shout out of my build since I didn't find it very useful in the late game where I spend the majority of my time. I just cycle Scream, Shriek and Screech for AVs.

Looks like anythig else I had to say has been covered.

Disclaimer: I have a lower-damage, more controllery build, so this may not be too relevant. It's based more around winning hard fights in the end than speeding up steamrolling.

I also went with the dark epic for Oppressive Gloom. Not only for the single-boss stun of Screech + OG but occasionally for Howling Twilight + OG.

I find Siren's Song useful. Some fights are a bit big to cover just with Fearsome Stare, as awesome as that power is. If I can put a few guys to sleep for even five seconds, that disrupts the pressure the team is under, briefly. Skipped Amplify. Dark powers need to hit all the time, so I based some IO sets around +acc, always am runnning Tactics (unless exemped), and don't do enough damage to get much help out of the damage buff. Also skipped Howl entirely and put Darkest Night off for quite a while, as it doesn't get used much outside of EB/AV fights. Kept Petrifying Gaze but don't use it much, as I have nothing reliable to stack it with other than itself, but in the event that I really need to keep one thing stunned and another held, I can do it.

For AVs, I have Dark Servant slotted for 3 Dark Watcher's to-hit debuff and three common Heal IOs. Tactics + his natural accuracy + set bonuses mean his heal hits, and since it goes off fairly often and is as strong as mine, it's pretty decent to have around. Am giving up the damage bonus from Dark Watcher's to do it though. Anyway, Servant and Darkest Night keep the AV from hitting much, and then it's Shriek/Scream/Screech for -resist, Twilight Grasp whenever it's up for the -acc, the heal, and I think there's a minor regen debuff. And of course Tar Patch.

can you solo AVs with dark/sonic def?

normally you should have all the tools to manage this...has anyone tried yet?

I, too, would like to know how this build combo would work solo.

Just deleted a Storm/Dark and a Rad/Sonic in their mid-20's for lack of fast-forward soloing ability and not wanna screw myself over again.

I find Dark/Sonic solo's quite well on it's own.

Going for softcapped ranged Defense on mine, some have said it's a waste on a Dark/ Defender to do so, with Darkest Night's -tohit debuff, but I've found in -def enemies, the combination makes up for itself.

Just last night I was surviving the ambushes in the second ITF mission solo. I was even triple stacked with ambushes, and surviving.

Hover (to stay at range in the cave), Darkest Night, Dark Embrace, lot's of Defense!
